GOG News and Updates 2013

It does feature a more advanced version of the Build engine, however, so from a technical standpoint, it's worth a look.

Other than that, I can't imagine it isn't just fun to play.

Shadow Warrior? I got that a year or two ago when I found a jewelcase copy around here, but it's such an insanely hard game... on the default difficulty I gave up before even beating the first level. I know I'm not that good at FPSes, but still, that game's way too hard. And yeah, the racial humor is unfortunate as well.

All the rest of those games are absolutely worth getting, though... well, maybe not the Blake Stone games unless you really like Wolfenstein 3D (I find the game boring after just a couple of levels, myself), but the others are for sure.

I wasn't deliberately emphasising that one, just thought I'd try using Minsc's highlighting from The Big List to draw people's attention to when more notable titles are on sale. An unfortunate week to start doing it, though!

Oh, I was just saying. Would've mentioned it even if it wasn't bold :)

I was under the impression that most of the Build engine games were highly regarded. Is that not the case with Shadow Warrior?

Generally speaking, it a really solid FPS. I don't like it as much as Duke 3D, but Shadow Warrior still holds up.

I would rank the build games in order from best to worst it would be (according to me):

Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition
Blood (though many think this one is better than Duke)
Shadow Warrior
Redneck Rampage (not as bad as it sounds)
Witchaven and Witchaven II (these were really just a poor man's version of Heretic/ Hexen)
PowerSlave (the Saturn and PSx versions are so much better)

The worst of the build engine games would be:

WWII GI
NAM
William Shatner's TekWar
Extreme Paintbrawl

Wow. I had a copy of Witchaven long ago and had completely forgotten that piece of shit existed. Thanks for reminding me! :p

Exhumed is the best build engine game for sure! The console versions of course, PC was a whole different shitty game afaik.

Oh... Right. Slavedriver! Well it's the best Slavedriver engine game! And among the best FPS of the era :)

It's been so long since I've played Witchhaven that I don;t even remember if it was better or worse than Powerslave on the PC. But I do remember it being really disappointing in comparison to Hexen.

Two new indie releases today, Driftmoon and 99 Levels to Hell.

Driftmoon reminds me a little of Neverwinter Nights visually, but if the content is good enough for people to enjoy the humor and story while putting aside the visuals as the comments suggest, perhaps it's worth a look. 99 Levels of Hell is described as a roguelike platformer with randomly generated levels.

More Team17!

Ultimate Body Blows

Edit: Also Total Overdose. I *think* someone was mentioning that just recently over in the "Games you remember, names you don't" thread

Edit2: Yep:

Guys if you can help me out. I remember playing this game, PS2-Xbox generation and probably came out between 2003-5, which had a Mexican/Spanish guy I think as a lead. Was open world sandbox I think and over the top. Somewhat just cause like. You could pull some stunts too I think.
I know its not a lot to go on but if anyone has any guess, will be welcome.

...turned out to be it.

I remember having a good time with it at release but I'm not sure about now especially when there are so many games that do the same sort of over the top slow mo action better these days.

It also had a sort of sequel/remake on the PSP called Chilli Con Carnage.

I feel like some of the "old" games coming out are bottom of the barrel types. There are plenty of greats yet to be released, and I especially hope they can get companies like LucasArts to join the catalog.

Ultimate Body Blows was a big thing for amiga gamers back in the day

I'd say that's reasonably true for all the recent spate of Team17 titles (and indeed, SWOS): More of a big deal for Amiga owners than PC owners of the time, but a *really* big deal for them.

I wonder where the rights to Bitmap Brothers titles ended up. There's quite a bit of scope there.

Edit: Oh they still exist, although perhaps in name only.

I already have Psychonauts via Steam Indie Bundle, but a DRM-free ver. is...tempting for some reason...

I do? I got it via the Humble Bundle months ago and it came with a Steam code.
...Will check my e-mail when I get back home.

As far as I know all Humble Bundles (other than the THQ one) have DRM free downloads too.

It should be on the page where you got your Steam key from but further down, there should be pictures of the games on the left and download links on the right.

Heh I do indeed get tDRM-free vrsions, thanks for the info!

Blade of Darkness looks interesting, tell me more of this classic game, GAF.

just watch someone play it for a while, you'll get the general idea. incredibly nice combat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRuudjlr7RA skip 20 mins in or so and it's going. there are some fun skill videos on youtube as well. but might be harder to get a sense for what's going on in those without having seen a lot of the gameplay. this one is short and sweet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZdP83kxT-U

damn, why aren't the castlespania morons working on a sequel to this. enough with the shitty castlevania games already.

just realised I've got the regular settlers II but not the 10th anniversary one. anything noteworthy about the 10th anniversary settlers 2, other than the hateful artstyle and pointless switch to 3d?

It has a map editor and a LAN mode. I think those were both missing in the original. There are probably more differences but it's been quite some time since I played it or the original. I think the campaign was different, too.

But I really, really liked the remake. It's very well done and captures what makes the original so great. You shouldn't miss out on it if you liked Settler 2. The sequel ("Aufbruch der Kulturen", don't know the English name) is "not quite as good".

Ah damn, seems the Vikings add-on was never released in English, so it's not included in the Gog version. I have to stick with the CD versions then.

Haha, $5 DLC went over about as expected in the reviews.

I wonder if they realize that I'm not only going to not buy that DLC, but any Kalypso game ever again.

Any chance we'll see Rune on GOG? I was always confusing Rune and Severance back in the day but never got a chance to play either one.

Rune wasn't all that good IMO. It was fun but only worth a rental (ps2 version anyway), but Blade of Darkness is a classic. Bought it on a whim and it remains one of my favorite fantasy games, the combat and gore system have yet to be even matched much less exceeded.
