Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I think eSports and pro gaming is absolutely dreadful. I fucking hate it and anyone who calls themself a pro gamer. It makes me sick.

The community, as a whole, takes itself too seriously. So much, to the point where it's obvious that people are trying too hard to get others to respect them. But in the end, the whole thing just makes it look like a bunch of losers and douche bags who want to make themselves feel better because they can whoop your ass in a video game. They've failed in the real world, but they can completely own you in the game world. OH SHIT SON!

The personalities and the "top players" simply irritate me. It makes gaming just look like one big joke. Like..this is the pinnacle of our hobby. This shit is what we've all aspired to be. This is what we want the world to know about what we do....Yeah...ok.

Basically, it's the overbearing bravado and ego that completely turns me off. You're not an athlete, motherfucker. I don't give a shit how good you are at Starcraft, League or Street Fighter. Sure, I do like seeing talented players showing off their skills and expertise. What I don't like is the shitty attitudes that come along with it and the image they project on everyone else who plays game. If people in pro gaming (and gurl gamerz....oh sweet Jesus...) weren't complete assholes and took gaming so seriously (I mean come on...they really are JUST games), I'd probably feel different. If it was more refined and the actual players didn't look like people I'd see at Hot Topic or an Everest University ad, then maybe I wouldn't have so much venom. I just...can't though...not the way it is now.

I fucking love eSports, I've subscribed to multiple MLGs/GSLs/IPL/everything, and have followed StarCraft II professionally since the day it came out.

I completely agree.

I think eSports has huge potential. It's just repulsive and utterly toxic as is.

Not all of it is bad though. Overall, it's the sophmoric image they project on the entire hobby that bums me out.

I might get trash thrown at me but:

Vaas from Far Cry 3 was one of the most interesting and memorable villains in any video game this generation. It's just sad he basically got shoe-horned into the "junkie lackey" role when his story involving Citra and the rest of the island could have been so much more.

I don't disagree with this. The only problem is that the writing and pacing of Far Cry 3 is terrible at times(it's a huge satire!!!! Lol) and Vaas had the potential to be one of those memorable guys for ages to come, but he fell short because of Ubisoft and was replaced by a horrible and forgettable new guy

I prefer Bethesda's take on Fallout over Obsidian's.

Wind Waker was shit. Awesome art style, absolutely. But the game was shit.

Okami >>> any Zelda after Majora's Mask

Sakamoto should be permabaned from the Metroid franchise.

Half life is not that good (at least it's gameplay, probably due to the oversaturation of shooters)... i obviously played it and half life 2 late, though my brothers had the copy sitting around for years.

Fallout 3 is not THAT great

Elder Scrolls are completely overrated in my opinion, Morrowind I actually couldn't go past an hour in. Overall I think they are very mediocre games, with the only real good things going for them are the massive environments. Skyrim is okay though

Halo 3 sucks, besides the ending (which is just the same idea as the 1st one with the car scene, just equally badass). The campaign didn't feel like as much work was put into it as the 1st two. Shorter and honestly not as entertaining.

I like Halo 2's campaign a lot, though not as much as the 1st.

Metroid Prime is boring, actually I take that back I liked the 1st one. I found the 3rd one hard to finish.

Zelda overrated as a franchise. Fun games but 4 titles (I usually see at least 2) in numerous top 20 games of all time lists is absurd.

For such a beloved franchise, I find God of War painfully repetitive

I find kirby to actually be an underrated franchise, mostly because it's a pink ball and is clearly catered to kids. Has probably some of the most unique and well made games i've seen in the industry. Though Kirby Superstar Co-op is still probably my favorite experience of those games

Megaman X (most titles in series) is far more enjoyable than any of the NES Megaman games

Super Mario World is a better game than Super Mario Bros. 3

Saints Row easily trumps GTA IV

I found the mini-games in pokemon stadium and pokemon stadium 2 a lot of fun (okay not that controversial, those games were awesome).

Platinum Games are corny, lame, and overrated.

I've sat down with Bayonetta on multiple occasions and I still don't get it.

I don't play Platinum Games for the story. I play them for the over the top action.

quote my avatar all you like, but the last 5 years of Sonic (2008-2013) have been better than the last 5 years of Mario. Especially in the kart racers.

I think Assassin's Creed III is the best in the series.

Me too.

Sakamoto should be permabaned from the Metroid franchise.
Not sure that's a controversial opinion in the wake of Other M's critical reception, but...

Sakamoto said:
It’s definitely true that Super Metroid was a good game but it is one of many good games in the series. Of course, there was the choice for me to work on a game more similar to Super Metroid but I don’t know if that would represent a true evolution of the series. We might be able to come up with a better Super Metroid but, some day sometime, we would work ourselves into a creative dead end if we were simply moving forward in one direction. I, myself, have been seeking new stimulations and new play feels with the games that I’ve been working on so at least I am trying to avoid repeating the same things.
Me: Prove it Sakamoto. Also, he was worried about painting the series into a creative corner by borrowing from fan favorite Super Metroid so his response was basically to develop Fusion 2.0 with a terrible anime storyline? Hmm...

Long story short, Sakamoto is a brilliant developer, but it sounds like he's out of touch with the series at this point, or just too neurotic to try another traditional Metroid. If he'd get over himself and do a straight up spiritual successor to the older more open ended style of Metroid games I'd be all for it though. Ditch Team Ninja and get Ubisoft Montpelier involved I say.

Half Life 2 is the pinnacle of the single player FPS with Bioshock a close, close second.

Deus Ex is the best action stealth game of the generation.

And as much as I LOVE MGS franchise, Kojima could seriously make it less convoluted and more direct and I feel it would result in a better overall story.

I'm with you, too. Connor is a really interesting character with genuine pathos that was denigrated because he wasn't as "fun" as Ezio despite the fact that he wasn't supposed to be, and has very good reasons not to be. Whatever problems AC3 had, they weren't in the characters.

Totally agree, Connor was like the exact opposite to Ezio, which was more to my liking.

and it seems we are not alone

I think Assassin's Creed III is the best in the series.

I want to add something, Watch Dogs is looking good, but it isn't making me go crazy, the concept is cool, but it feels like a modern time Assassin's Creed with a creative twist -they can't just go and make an AC clone in modern time-.

It is interesting, I will buy it, but it is not like I am going crazy over it, I want Dishonored 2.

I imagine most people who yap on about how every core (2D or 3D platformer) Mario game just being another brain-dead rehash, have no argument beyond it being another platformer with Mario in it. Well, yeah, it's another platformer, but that doesn't mean it doesn't change or incorporate new ideas. If you don't like platformers that's fine, but for the most part, Mario is consistently an exemplar in the genre, and often changes things up while carrying themes over (like Final Fantasy games). It often lacks power-up variety, but it makes up for it with tight controls, solid mechanics and primo level design.

I think their "argument" does hold water when you look at the New Super Mario Bros. series; those do look very samey, and the only one I've played (NSMB 2 on the 3DS) is the possibly the weakest Mario game I've played--it's a middling platformer, with only shallow puddles of fun surrounded but deserts of run-of-the-mill; the frequent hackneyed level design and the flat, somewhat bland art direction doesn't help. However, Mario can still be very fresh. For example, the recent Super Mario 3D Land was excellent. It used unique ideas often for just one level and then just threw them away; let's move on to the next idea! Mario sometimes doesn't change very much graphically or thematicly, and brings back the same enemies. But, mechanically, it is often very varied in the platformer genre, and is very often an excellent contender in said genre.

I think most of the people who bash Mario, don't like platformers, haven't played the games and/or don't pay much attention when they actually play the games. Once again, their concerns are very likely valid concerning the New Super Mario Bros. line, but I've only played one of them, so I can't be sure. The NSMB line and 90% of Galaxy 2 aside, I have played every single other one, and I have to say I don't agree with their spit in your face and run "argument."

P.S. I'm not incredibly angry about this, I'm just bored and my posts tend to get overly wordy. Carry on. Also, I don't think I'm a Nintendo fan boy. I don't really like most Zelda, Star Fox or Metroid games. Now that I think of it, I'm only into select portions of their library. I think my love of platformers is what makes me defend Mario, but not Nintendo. You can criticize Nintendo all you want, they are in need of some. Too bad they tend not to listen.

Mine:
Banjo Kazooie makes Mario 64 a total joke. Better controls, way better level design, puzzles, mini games, character moves. Only people in denial say otherwise.

I didn't want to shit on a thread where people were genuinely excited for a new game in a series they loved, then I remembered this thread.

Guilty Gear sucks. Daisuke Ishiwatari is a hack. I just don't like the series in general (characters and gameplay just didn't click with me) but I'll never understand what people see in the music. It's just horrible background noise in a game. Very forgettable and bland.

Yoshi's Island is the most contrived, awful piece of shit to ever grace the SNES, GBA, or any other platform it might infect. I cannot imagine the intense and absolute disappointment fans of SMW1 felt when this festering pile of shit masqueraded as SMW2. How people can call it a good Mario game, not even the best Mario game, not even the best game on the SNES, not even the best game ever, but simply a good Mario game, confounds me. It is the epitome of awful. Everything from the awful hit mechanics (a crying baby, that's fun!) to the "has potential, but is fucking awful" egg system, to the stupidly designed levels makes me want to vomit.

Fuck you Yoshi.

Streets of Rage 3 has the best soundtrack of the series.

It's funny how Miyamoto shat on Donkey Kong Country for its players putting up with mediocre game mechanics as long as the art was good, when Yoshi's Island is a much better example.

Dont hate it as much as you do, but i certainly think the nostalgia goggles are particularly strong on this game.

I thought I was the only one...

-Taking a look at my gaming catalog, by virtue of the company whose games I bought the most of. I'm" going to go ahead and say that SEGA is of the one most underrated developer/publishers in the (7th) generation.

-I love Dynasty Warriors, played all of them (including the first one). It actually made me buy Romance of the Three Kingdoms to read it.

Graces is best Tales
only played Vesperia Graces and Abyss

Sega sucks right now and could be so much better.

That1BlackGuy mentioned Dynasty Warriors, I used to love those games, and I got the first book of RoTK from a friend when I was in high school. Short chapters IIRC. But anyway, I started crazy researching the Three Kingdoms period because of that.

Dynasty Warriors 3, 4, and 6 have some of the best music in video games.

Mega Man 4 is best MM.

I can sign on to that. Some people conduct themselves well and such. But yeah I wouldn't find such behavior so cool in actual athletes, it's not always bad to be seriously dedicated to your hobby, but the bravado, ego, and need to prove oneself is massively annoying and huge turn off. Sometimes there's playful egging on, but the colosseum behavior and mentality is too strong in my opinion.

Agreed with those. Well...MMX is better than any NES MM game. Well, I like X2, X4, X5, and X8 and that's pretty controversial, I'm sure.

Rising was bad enough. But some of the things I saw in the bladewolf game cements it. Rising is the worse thing to happen to Metal Gear/Solid story/world. I hope that it is all ignored if there is another Metal Gear that takes place years after 4.

As I said in another thread.

  • Sonic Generations > Sonic Unleashed > SA2 >S3&K
  • SA1 was mediocre/garbage
  • Ristar was mediocre/garbage and had the same platforming of the Werehog from Unleashed but in 2D.
  • Fuck Yoshi's Island.
  • Fuck Tekken. That game has the worst 3D Fighting game mechanics on EARTH. Which is a shame because the characters and settings are way more interesting than Soul Calibur which actually does have decent mechanics.
  • Sonic 3D Blast was a great game that gets hated on for no damn reason. It's functional and well paced. With great music and the best Special Stages.
  • Once Street Fighter V happens say good-bye to 50% of the fighting game community.
  • The best games that ArcSystemWorks ever made never made it to Japan.
  • Sony is the reason for why the industry is the way it is, not Microsoft.
  • Nintendo is the only saviour for mid-tier developers, whether they like it or not.
  • Everybody who bought Final Fantasy XIII over Resonance of Fate are the very damn reason we're not getting a sequel.
  • Vanguard Princess is currently the best fighting game out there along with KOFXIII.
  • Capcom's fighting games have diminished in quality ever since Ono happened.
  • Lost Planet 1 & 2 were the best damn TPS's on the market. Only thing that comes close is Vanquish which surpasses in Single Player, but not Multiplayer.
  • The Day that DMC surpassed Anarchy Reigns in sales was a day where we all failed.

I think that the success of the Nintendo DS is the sole reason for the fall of the jRPG genre.

If jRPG stayed on consoles, you would have seen something completely different.

Story should be kept to a minimum and should only be an excuse to kick some ass.*

What kills my enjoyment of gaming nowadays (and even back in the day) are endless cutscenes, tons of character exposition, copious amounts of dialog, etc. This is even more annoying when the game takes control away from me to try and shove its "deep narrative" down my throat, trying to force me to "feel" something. Games should be games first and foremost.

* There are a few genres that need more story than others, like adventure games and RPGs, but even then a lot of RPGs overdo the story nowadays.

It goes without saying that this just IMHO.

(Cracks fingers) okay!

•Bioshock is an average game with mediocre gameplay.
•Assassins creed was bastardized after the first.
•Dead space is a 6/10 at best.
•unreal engine is the ugliest most unappealing/clunky engine that exists today.
•Mario.. Lol grow the fuck up people.
• Zelda.. I get it but it wasn't for me.
•Far cry 3: Blood dragon becomes a tiresome joke.
• Skyrim > all elder scrolls.
•Kratos is one dimensional.
• uncharted 3 is not as bad as people make it out to be.
• Mass effect 3's ending wasn't bad.
• Arkham Asylym was garbage.
•Dante's Inferno was underrated.
• Red Dead Redemption was boring.

Now I'm just ranting, but it feels good man.

I'm sure I'll think of more later, but for now...

The Mass Effect series is majorly overrated. None of the games even approaches "Game of the Year" material.

Top Bottom
