Sim City is now down, the maintenance message is amazing

Public Service Announcement: If anyone is waiting to get back in, a friend has just sent me a message through Origin to tell me that the servers should be back up within the next 40 minutes.

I'm less interested in the impact this will have on the SimCity franchise and more interested in this as another example of why people should not buy games at full price early.

Yea, I'll wait on this one. Look fucking awesome, but it's a shame EA/Maxis screwed up the infrastructure.

Luigi's Mansion and Heart of the Swarm for me this month, I suppose.

YEAH, GAME IS UNLOCKED IN EU, THIS IS GOING TO BE FUCKING RAD! WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS :D :D :D :D :D

Intriguing and cinematic gameplay, 9/10

I consider myself a bit "older" of a gamer at 41. I grew up with Vectrex, the Atari 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision, Odyssey 2..basically when video gaming was in it's infancy.

You younger guys and ladies are "inheriting" the legacy of home gaming and what you are supporting with always on DRM in today's games is not something you should support nor be proud of.

You only back up claims from the likes of EA who state that gamers love micro-transactions, free to play models and suspect DLC(some of which is cut from full games to monetize it later).

Remember just buying a game, putting it into your console and playing it? Now we have internet activations, always on DRM, micro-transactions, DLC instead of mod tools and upcoming consoles that may block used games.

That's not what gaming is about. It's not fun. It's not enjoyable. It's corporate suits sitting in an office thinking of additional ways to screw over you younger folks and extract more money from your pockets.

They're using the guise of "development costs", "next gen" features and so forth to justify the nickel and diming of your wallets.

Don't embrace this legacy. Don't support it. If you support it, you only have yourselves to blame when your "digital future" some are so eager to embrace is locked behind pay walls or downed servers.

Please fellow gamers, wake up and don't support this.

This needs to be quoted

Gah...so frustrating. These games need to be reviewed as a "live" service on day one regardless of anything else in the game.

It ought to, rightfully, take consumers a while to figure out that they shouldn't buy things when they are available for purchase. If your product isn't ready, you shouldn't release it, and if this is truly a pattern of deviant behavior by companies, then they should be punished by the law.

There are also throngs of people out there who don't follow games as closely as us, but 'want to get that new Sim City game,' so they will buy it when they see it advertised.

Or even below full price. I got it for a steep discount before Maxis showed any gameplay, long before always online or small cities were a concern. From my perspective it's like I kickstarted an EA game. A new SimCity from the guys who make SimCity seemed like a good bet at one point.

Strange i could play, seeing the whole list that people created. But yeah it is pretty lame the menu when you press play. It is all multiplayer based just to freaking weird. Don't know how long i can play this or i can get my money back and buy something different.

the joke was apparently not obvious enough

Of course I understood it at as a joke, but I nevertheless had the urge to inform others. In spite of the emails that went out and the blog post, some still didn't know about the maintenance scheduled for today.

Anyways, enough of that tangent....

Soo glad I didn't finish the checkout process on GMG the three times I considered buying Sim City. Not touching it until the server issues are a thing of the past. Such a shame.

It's amazing that EA would be this stupid.

I thought about buying SimCity yesterday but I knew this would happen. After thinking about it I decided that it will be rare indeed that I give any of my money to EA in the future.

Hysterical - Kotaku article from June of last year about EA not repeating Diablo III's mistakes with SimCity
Holy shit

SimCity Is Online Only, But It Promises Not To Repeat Diablo III’s Mistakes
But what of the debacle of the Diablo III launch and the fury of players who couldn't play a game they wanted to play solo because Blizzard had trouble keeping its servers up and error-free?

"We've got experience from Spore and Darkspore," Katserelis said, citing other recent Maxis games. "EA is an on online company. We're definitely watching what's going on at Blizzard, and we're putting in backstops and checks to try to prevent those kind of things from happening.

I was looking forward to this game so much even with the always online bullshit but the tiny micro themed cities your limited to ruins the game. Teah i know they wanted players to trade and share between there micro cities but to me thats dumb. I want my massive sprawling mega city.

Problem: Day 1 launches for games that implement always online DRM system have a nasty habit of not being able to meet server demand. People spend the first few days facing server errors, connections loses, or just can't connect due to load. It's a damn shame. :(

Solution: For a small fee, gain access to elite servers exclusive to only holders of the DRM elite server pass! Purchase this pass and you'll never have to worry about facing server errors or connectivity issues, be it day 1 or day 1000!

We'll even perform system maintenance around your schedule!

---

Thank me later EA.

Wow the amazon(1.3 out of 5 stars) and metacritic (2.5) user reviews are really low. That DRM is not good for the game.

This is pretty much what every fan of this franchise really wants out of a Sim City game. EA just decided for them that experience would no longer be possible.

Seeing this game at the top of the Amazon sales charts right now makes me a little sad.
