Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

It's the last bossfight? What do you expect? Checkpoints after every two strikes? Those QTEs are also the easiest thing ever. It really takes effort to miss one.

I expect a checkpoint before the QTE instead of at the second phase of the fight. And if it's designed to be so easy, don't have it then.

Yeah no, a checkpoint before a QTE would completely undermine its purpose.

I'm not saying QTEs are the greatest gameplay mechanic ever but having checkpoints directly before them would be fucking stupid. There has to be something at stake, even if it's just a minute of progress.

You know what's more stupid? Having to replay 5 minutes of a bossfight because you failed a QTE.

Are you seriously defending shitty QTEs?
Nope, I'm calling out gamers who want checkpoints every two steps.

Also, as I already said: those are the easiest QTEs ever. In fact, I played that fight on various difficulties and just saw Gabriel die there for the first time. I'm not exactly a friend of QTEs either but in this game they aren't a big deal at all.

They could have just, you know, let that sequence play out without the QTE. I would be perfectly fine with that.

Nope, there has to be something at stake. Gamers today... *sigh*

There would be something at stake: having to watch the cutscene that involves the QTE again.

EDIT: And I knew about the surprise ending before, but I never actually saw it 'til now. The reveal after smashing the window is pretty well done.

I should really play a castlevania game one of these days.

Its a shame the PAL version of SOTN is 50hz otherwise I would get it and play on the train.

They could've, but they didn't. I think it's fine that way - because they are so easy. It added a bit of satisfaction to finishing off the bosses.

That's what gamers have become these days.

You're playing the "hardcore gamer" card over a quick time event. I'll happily play games with consequence for failing, like Dark Souls, XCOM on Ironman, roguelikes, because those games do it through gameplay. Not "did you press the button in time?" alright go do that last section again. Them being easy is irrelevant. QTEs during cutscenes are garbage.

Watching Lords of Shadow motivated me to finally get off my ass and play the God of War franchise. I've got the HD collection and GoW 3 still in the shrinkwrap. At least they were. Marathon time.

I get satisfaction from bosses that challenged me with the gameplay, not with pressing buttons as they prompt me on the screen.

Hardcore gamer? Those QTEs are fucking easy as shit. And it's not like it was a huge chunk of progress that was lost. It was like 1 or 2 minutes. You don't even have to start the fight from the beginning. And again: it's the LAST boss in the game, not some tutorial fight.

Most QTE's just exist to make cut-scenes more interactive. There should be no real penalty for failing them aside from doing it again. Having to re-do a boss fight because you failed the QTE at the end isn't 'difficulty' or 'old school', it's just a time sink.

The best QTEs are the ones you missed because you took your hand off the controller during a cutscene.
Ugh, that's the worst. "Oh, you reached for a coke? QTE failed, re-do boss!".

Guys, I'm kind of down to play LoS2 now. Is there something wrong with me?

That's what I'm saying, they clearly farted out a Castlevania for their reboot that was all "ye olde world" and shit to not look like they were pissing all over IGA's grave and now we're getting what they actually wanted to make

LoS was not farted out. Game was great, and very long. The hate it gets is ridiculous and completely illogical in Giant Bombs case. I mean they ignored it when it released and didnt even review it.

This man knows what he's talking about.

Over time it has become kinda pathetic to watch Jeff desperately trying find things to hate about this game ... you know "for fun".

You see, that's what I'm getting at. It doesn't add anything unless a game is designed well around it (Asura's Wrath). In this context, easy or not, it's a pointless tool used to make sure you keep holding on to your control during cut scenes.

I just told you it added something for me when I played, didn't I? Did you play the game? The QTEs in those scenes are actually pretty well done and well-paced.

OK I was only saying "farted out" as a turn of phrase it wasn't meant to be indicative of anything

my throat is not large enough for you to jump down it

Jeff's hate is obviously satire because he wasn't going to play it even if it were good. On the podcast, he was basically saying that it was the worst game ever because it wasn't literally the first 2D Castlevania. It's not the best joke ever but it's clearly a joke.

You're not getting this. People are saying that they rather get that challenge during the actual boss fight, not a prompt that resets you to a somewhat far checkpoint just because you didn't see the prompt properly.

Do you not see what's annoying about something that is essentially a one-hit KO, that was presented to you at the last minute, in what people thought was the ending cut scene?

Well good for you for being so easily impressed. And yes I have played it. What does that have to do with anything though? QTEs used in this context are shit. They were a novelty in the early days, but got old by the time God of War whored it out, and they have been shit in 99% of the games they have been used in ever since. This Castlevania game is no exception.

Reminds me of the stupid touch screen symbols they had you draw in Dawn of Sorrow after boss fights.

I know. But forced jokes aside, you can tell Jeff doesn't "want" to like this game.

Yeah, except it's not far at all. It's about a minute.

It's not a one-hit KO either. The boss just regains some of his energy. That's all.

I like to stress it again: this is the game's final boss.

I just got a mailbag for my birthday. In it was the sweet delicacies from Canada, a letter and a gift. He is a fellow Giantbomb/gaf/lost lover and this is possibly my favorite birthday gift in awhile.

I just felt like I had to share it because :D its soo awesome!! :)

Wait, sorry, a member of Giant Bomb-GAF sent another member of Giant Bomb-GAF a mailbag for his birthday? Which 95% of the story did I miss?

I wasn't impressed, but I wasn't bothered by them either. Most of the time I liked them. It felt somewhat satisfying to dish out the final, cinematic blows by yourself.

Reminds me of the stupid touch screen symbols they had you draw in Dawn of Sorrow after boss fights.
That stuff on the other hand does bother me because it requires more effort than pressing a button.
