Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

I know. But forced jokes aside, you can tell Jeff doesn't "want" to like this game.

Yeah, except it's not far at all. It's about a minute.

It's not a one-hit KO either. The boss just regains some of his energy. That's all.

I like to stress it again: this is the game's final boss.

It doesn't look like the boss regained some of his energy, it seemed to have reseted back to the checkpoint after the first QTE event.

Also I have fought plenty of great bosses that didn't rely on cutscene QTEs.

You might be right, I'd have to watch it again (I played that fight at least five times on all difficulties and never managed to die at that point, I think Vinny was a little nervous there). But the outcome was the same basically.

Me too. Let's agree that QTE's are not a very good gameplay mechanic. Sometimes I loathe them, but in this game I didn't.

I'm really happy Vinny insisted on playing Lords of Shadow on these shows, while noone's minds were completely changed about the game (which is fair enough) I do feel like they'd all become a lot more accepting of the game and the series.

Their commentary over the game the last couple of weeks has been pretty enjoyable, I think. Snarky, but very playful snark. Whereas when Vinny first popped open Lords of Shadow the tone was a very negative brand of snark that was awful to watch.

Lords of Shadow is a totally fun game, but definitely quite flawed. I do quite like it, though.

Vinny is a mighty man for pimping this great game. Someone give him a throne with a compartment for his miserable pile of secrets.

Edit: Oh man, you don't have to be a member to view that link. To premium subscribers, the URLs are working. Take last week's show URL, and change the date. Volla!

Trying to open it off the video page just gives me 404 errors. The url switching trick works (for the download page).
Drew's commitment to his transitions is great.

Alright, guys, in case anyone is having any trouble
(Note: This will only work for premium members because you cannot see download links unless you are one. The reason why I don't just post the URL to this week's video is because non-subscribers could use it to watch it. And the Giant Bomb duders are too awesome for me to facilitate in such poop):

  1. Go to the page for last week's show here.
  2. Under the 'Download' button, select the quality you want and open it in your browser.
  3. Take the URL for that video and change both instances of 01 to 08.
  4. You should be watching this week's show.

canceling your attack recovery by timing it so your land your jump right as the attack hits feels so good.

I know right, you have a basic attack but there are so many things you can do to modify your basic attack that using such a simple action becomes quite involved. Honestly I would take that over a shoehorned "combo system". There's just a 'purity' with Metroidvanias that comes from being clean, direct, fast and being in 2D. Igarashi actually talked about this in a GDC talk or something.

Is giant bomb mobile shit for everyone or just me?
I'm on android and videos don't work at all.

The video player controls are messed up for me on the stock android browser (jelly bean, Galaxy note 2) but the videos play. Everything works, controls and all, on mobile Chrome.

I don't believe I have ever once played a Castlevania game. I don't have a good reason or excuse for why, but I just never have. Vinny playing the Lords of Shadow stuff hasn't really interested me at all, but this Symphony of the Night... it looks pretty great. I'm actually interested in playing this.

I played it, I liked it but I just could never keep with it long enough to finish or max it out. I think I crapped out at about the halfway point.

Do it, it's a classic. First time I played it was on XBLA so I don't have any nostalgia goggles so you know when I say it's great I mean it.

Also I never got the hate for the XBLA version, I thought it was a pretty good port with minimal load times.

I hadn't played one before a few months ago when I bought SotN. It holds up really well.

Jeff on his tumblr implies in his latest post that they will at some point put sponsorship in TNT which implies to me that either subscriptions aren't bringing in the money or they're moving away from subscriptions as their primary source of money. I wonder where they'll strike the balance between the most interested sponsors probably being things they shouldn't be sponsoring and the more acceptable sponsorship targets probably paying less.

Does he mean TNT being all about a sponsored game?

I don't think so. "Sponsorship" was probably a bad way to put it.
I recently had some discussions that could lead to a sort of product placement on TNT. We’ll see. I’m willing to give that a few honest shots to see if there’s a way to do it without making everything feel gross.

TNT is not very good, so I'm not the least bit worried about it being undermined by sponsors and if it can bring in some money to let them keep doing GB stuff then great
