Dragon's Crown to re-emerge next week

"Is it truly D&D3 or is it 2D Monster Hunter?"

Neither. It looks to be a spiritual successor to the D&D Arcade games which were Beat Em Ups (Streets of Rage/Final Fight) with slight RPG aspects.

But, that's just going off first impressions. There's no significant information about the game so it's anyone's guess, aside from what the trailers imply.

Excellent. I only recently started looking up stuff about this game and now I'm interested. I'm addicted to multiplayer games on vita. It makes the experience more fun playing with friends.

Well....that's what I meant by D&D3.

There's a bit from interviews with Kamitani waaaaaaaaaaaay back when this was still Ignition's game:

The "2D monster hunter" idea comes from what Kamitani has said in the past about the ideas for persistent RPG stats in the game. Mostly dealing with weapons.

Throughout the game, players will find weapons, which can be leveled up. Dragon’s Crown also RPG elements, but specifics have not been finalized yet.

Due to the success of Monster Hunter in Japan, we wanted our game to have a feature where people can get together and play. Since Vita is coming out soon we thought it would be great to start with it, also because players can play with PlayStation 3 players too. That’s another advantage of bringing a cooperative game like Dragon’s Crown to Vita.

Dragon's Crown is an online-ready 2D title featuring teams of player-controlled parties exploring a vast labyrinth, slaying foes and hunting for treasure. "It's still being fine-tuned," Kamitani said, "but currently, each weapon has a durability stat, and if you rush in with it, you run the chance of having the weapon blown out of your hands. You can pick it up again if it's right nearby, but it's possible you might lose it entirely, in which case you'll have to fight barehanded until a thief in your party picks up another weapon."

How will online play work? "Online, players can fight with any of the game's classes they like. There will be RPG-like elements, and you'll be able to look for more powerful weapons and learn assorted skills. You can't chat online, but there will be greeting and dying messages you can define." Dying messages? "This is still in the works, but as you play, the game gathers information about other players online, and when they die, their bones appear in your game. You can then see their dying message by examining the bones, and you can take the bones back to the temple and resurrect them to have the characters fight for you as NPCs. That's the plan, anyway."

Just alot that suggests the game will have alot of loot and character building elements rather than being a straight beat-em-up.(Which I understand is sort of necessary in today's market to really give games like this legs and value in the long run)

Curious to see how all these elements have come together into a playable product as at the time they all sounded really abstract at the time. Like they were still conceptualizing alot of the game.

Been waiting a long time for this game glad it's still alive and didn't get the Grand Knights treatment. Muramasa is one of my most played games ever I have complete faith in their ability to make this a deep brawler/RPG. Can't wait to see what they have in store hell it might even make me jump back into a Vita.

...cross-gen maybe? Though, that assumes that there would even be an advantage to the PS4 hardware for this game. Theoretically it could run at a flawless 60fps if not also in 1080p, but we still don't know the game's specifications on PS3.

I've wanted this game for a while but I've got enough on my plate for now. Looking forward to whatever they announce though, even if its only a japanese release date.

"Well....that's what I meant by D&D3."

I see what you mean, now. When someone says D&D3 I automatically tack an "e" on to the end, which doesn't really make sense in retrospect, but yeah.

This could turn out to be decent year for Playstation-exclusive JRPGs:

Ni no Kuni
Tales of Xillia
Final Fantasy X HD
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD
Dragon's Crown
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Phantasy Star Online 2
Ys: Foliage Ocean in Celceta

and........if there is a god.......Final Fantasy Versus XIII in November.

Here is another good interview with Kamitani http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/132486/king_of_2d_vanillawares_george_.php?print=1

All these articles makes me want to go back and get a Saturn play some of his older stuff.

It's crazy to think that Vanillaware is a studio of less than two dozen people...

from interview said:
GK: Well, I worked on Fantasy Earth for Square Enix a few years ago, and a lot of us on the team want to try our hand at another online MMO project -- 2D, 3D, whatever. We've got Fantasy Earth II running through our minds, all of us.

HNNNNNG

Unconfirmed reports indicate the game will be released in Japan on July 25. Hmmm. Seems there might be an early magazine leak. There are details for other stuff too, like Ketsui PS3 and Acquire's PSP/Vita game Mind Zero.
