VGLeaks: First look as Durango XDK (always connected, kinect required, must install)

I couldn't care less about the always on, requires kinect to function. Who cares, it's the same as requiring a controller to play a game.

The improved controller sounds good.

But this nonsense about will not use optical media to stream content really bothers me? WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU WASTE A DATA CONNECTION WHEN THE CONTENT IS RIGHT THERE TO INSTALL? WHY MICROSOFT?

Ah fuck it, I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it pans out, perhaps they'll make it work.

Probably to counter loading time and piracy. If you have to install the disc, then burned Bluray wont really work since there will probably have a installation code or something.

I will pick it up at launch, but I doubt it will be my favorite system or that I will buy games more for it than for the Ps4.

That is not said, you may still need to have the disc in like you do now with a full install on the 360. It will need a DRM method to make it like Steam where the disc is not required, which means a network connection and authentication with a server.

If the reason for the full game installs is so you no longer have to swap disc, then there will definitely have to be some form of DRM.

And where does it say that the Xbox requires one? In fact this interview states pretty much the same thing as the leak here; the PS4 can be always online even when in standby. He does add that this can be disabled, but nowhere does the XDK claim that this connection is required either.

Not sure where the outrage is coming from. In the end maybe it ends up being a requirement, but I have no idea how people are reading this and coming to that conclusion. Baffling

How exactly are you going to avoid those two things on Durango?

Suspend and resume mode. They've already mentioned it in a previous leak. PS4 is already going to do, abeit for only 1 game at time. Vita already does it for one game at a time.

Pretty sure there will be a timer like Simscity where if you are not connected after x amount of time they will disconnect you. If the saves are store locally, should not be a big problem outside of the obvious "Well, I cannot play my video games anymore because Microsoft have closed the server for my solo game."

Depends. If you started a games of Demon's Souls when connected to PSN and the connection dropped / you got signed out for any reason, your game would just end with a connection error. FFFFUUUUU!

So yeah, there are good ways to implements it, and idiotic ways. The jury is out on how MS will implement always online.

Gaming from the optical disc is not supported. Therefore, if I run out of fridge space, I'm fucked.

Just buy MS's official 2TB HDD for Next Box, that will retail for $400!! :-D

A few points.

1. The Wii U dosen't come with a sensor bar. The Wii did, but the Wii U does not.
2. There is no information about whether or not the PS4 comes it's camera bar. If I had to guess I bet the "core" does not and the "pro" does.
3. While Xbox Live has been a very good service, it has had some pretty bad outages/problems especially during holidays when Call of Duty comes out. Just because they where better than Nintendo or Sony does not mean that everybody believes that they are equipped to take the next step.

The reason that people are freaking is that every Durango rumor (including this one) reinforces the negative "no used games" rumor. If Microsoft wanted to put that rumor to be they could. With a short press release, a Major Nelson tweet, or a controlled leak to a journalist. As long as Microsoft stays silent on this people are going to get uncomfortable and they have every right to.

Yes it does

This console continues to look more and more like a complete disaster. I was flamed hard when I stated this before, but things are becoming more clear now....

"Durango will implement different power states so that it can always be powered on, but will draw minimal electricity when not in use. The console will be ready instantly when users want to play, and will always maintain a network connection so that console software and games are always current. With this 'Always On, Always Connected' design, users will quickly and easily enjoy their connected entertainment experiences, with no waiting for the console to restart or install updates."

There is nothing in that quote that suggests any sort of always online DRM for games. It's all related to system updates.

My take.

Will it require an always connected to the Internet state?
No.

Will it be able to have an always on connection to the network at your home for sharing media instantly as you move from one room to another. Say from your tv to your PC back to your tv. Will you be able to control downloads from your online dash and so forth like the 360 but with a better interface and include things like movies and so forth.
Yes.

It is actually somewhat of a big deal if it IS always on and always connected. In a good way, for the various reasons people mentioned with updates and so forth. But not required.

Kinect + the word required

Connected + the word always and + maintain are not the same as required. And as a technical document the expectation is that if its required it would state required...like the other required bits it mentions.

Good points.

Said nothing about online being "mandatory" in the OP though. Just said always online.

Its just word play. They are not going to use words or phrases like "mandatory online" or "DRM". They were always going to coin a phrase thats more consumer friendly.

"Always online, Always connected" seems like the phrase they will most likely use to try to avoid the minefield.

If this turns out to be genuine the most likely case IMO will be:

-Games come with (QR?) code card and the DRM systems works like Steam. PR will sell it as a gaming Jukebox but it is a used game prevention method.
-Always online doesn't seem much different than PS4's update strategy. MS won't be so stupid to require an online connection for normal gaming.
-Kinect is a lock and will make the system more expensive, which I hate but it will be interesting to see if this leads to the unicorn that is the "Kinect hardcore game".

I can't wait for the rumors to stop and being able to compare two real systems in November.

FYI. A real XDK would have technical terms and not word play.

This is not some marketing catch phrase, it's a documentation for devs. If it's mandatory to be online they would say so.

Nothing would warm my heart more than an extremely consumer-unfriendly device crashing and burning upon release. Vote with your wallets people.

Bailout guys XD

I don't want to be always online =S, sometimes I purposely disconnect from Live for gameplay reasons =/
Oh and if it installs onto the hard drive no proprietary hard drive bull shit this gen Microsoft...

Each one of those things alone doesn't bother me that much. My 360 is always connected (when it's on), I install most games as the HDD space is ample. Kinect just sits there for the most part. But put them together and...

A camera, that Microsoft controls, always on and connected to the internet.

....this bugs me. Dunno, I don't like the fundamental mistrust the set up implies. Gotta install all games, no play from disc, Kinect must be running to work....none of this makes the system sound more appealing.

And if they require HDD installs, the capacity has to be gargantuan given the Blu-Ray discs.

They created a patent to detect the numbers of people watching a movie and sell additional licences if the number is higher than what the movie allow.
NO FUCKING JOKE. Wanna watch Lord of the ring with 5 friends? You have to pay to watch it, or it will not play the disc.

Sure, but most patents never get used in actual products. It's about as likely as Sony making you yell McDonalds during ads.

Of course they would love to do this. They've said as much. They're not that stupid though

Disc will not be in the tray. They've already been said to work on capability to suspend / resume your games from any state.

They want you to play multiple games without ever switching discs.

You'll also need to be connected for the intial install at the very least.

That would be an awesome feature, does the PS4 have it?

Funny thing is how similar it is to what Sony is said to be doing in an earlier link posted.

look at the really simple language used. Most of the things said a developer does not need to know. The whole document existence and its structure makes absolutely no sense to be found in an sdk

I will agree that seemed weird to me, but I'm not sure what's in those docs, so hard for me to say honestly.

Or it could be just like the PS4. Taken from Kotaku: -

Sony is hoping that you would keep your machine online, though, so they can keep quietly patching games, updating games, sending games to you and all sorts of other stuff. This is a company, mind you, that painted a vision yesterday of a "psychic" online store that would learn your tastes and have the next game you might want to buy already downloaded to your machine before you even knew it existed—just waiting for you to click to pay.
So unless you disconnect your ethernet cable or turn your router off, the PS4 is always online too, as even when it's off it's downloading game patches and things - just like Durango.

Could the online thing be like an opt-in type service like Folding@Home was for PS3?

To help power the rumored Siri like functionality and perform updates ala PS+?
