Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

Of course, I'm just saying that's the impression people get when they see posts like that.

Gaf is generally friendly to newcomers! Check out the thread; I and others were treated nicely when the demo came out.

I played Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on the PSP today because the Bombcast happened and man, this game has tutorials all over. It's kind of destroying the assumed impenetrability I thought this series had.

It's only impenetrable if you don't pay attention.

MH3 was my first Monster Hunter and I had zero problems getting into it.

I attempt to make a comment that obliquely references that it's probably not a good idea to make discouraging comments to someone that is interested in a game that is attempting to gain a foothold in the US and it turns into a critique of the LoL community.

For the record, you can call it thin skin, but I have better things to do than endure hours of abuse simply because I'm new to a game. And you have to acknowledge that a community has problems when it's had to repeatedly perma-ban pros for player abuse.

While I totally understand not wanting to endure the shit thrown at you by the assholes of the community, I think the problem of "too many assholes" is just inherent to the massive popularity of league compared to other games. Throw enough people into something and you're bound to get scum, it just scales with size.

I'm listening to some old Bombcasts for some reason and Jeff's giving his first impressions on Spec Ops. I missed the start of the chat so it took me until the mention of Nolan North saying motherfucker before I recognised it because holy fuck. He really didn't seem to like it at that point (and he was describing moments from when the game got fucked up too). Weird how that worked out.

Kudos to Kessler! Wish the guy was GB intern forever.

But then again, it was Brad that was playing it, so I dunno....
Many months have passed but still, sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, soaked in sweat and screaming things like "CIRCLE!" or "GRIP METER!".

Just watched the Luigi's Mansion QL.

I hate when Patrick drops solutions to puzzles right away. I know puzzle games may be boring/frustrating to watch with people trying to figure out solutions, but I think it's even worse when it's just one of them telling the other person what to do. Just have fun with it and let the solver go about the game at his own pace.

But then again, it was Brad that was playing it, so I dunno....

Yeah, he was only saying it when Brad was about to leave the room or completely ignoring the cool thing Patrick wanted him to see.

Er, the feeling of beating up nubs or beating a legit good player/team always trumps the bullshit of a "bad community". Not playing because of that just tells me you don't have thick skin for a competitive scene, regardless of the game. Not to mention most people surround themselves with other gamers they don't think suck.
A bad community is a legit reason to not play a game. If it's not fun, it's not fun, and not everyone can get over dealing with a hostile play environment.

If the community was your local fgc spot with 4 regulars that suck, I'd agree. We're talkin about lol though, a community of millions.

you can tell me that, and i can jump into a game and feel like i get lamed at everywhere i go. it's not a question of 'well, it's only a small number of assholes in a sea of great people' when i keep running into apparently the small number of assholes everywhere i go

actually i don't know why i'm continuing this conversation i have no interest in LoL at all. But the philosophical point that we should expect bad people in a large community and the only solution is to grow thicker skin/put up with it is bullshit. Why should I suffer through a hostile community to learn to enjoy a thing that is unenjoyable because of the hostile community? Fuck that.
