Bioshock Infinite - Review Thread [UP: IGN exclusive split PC/Console review up]

Oddly, only two weapons and two vigors can be hotkeyed at any given time (via a quick tap of the Xbox’s shoulder buttons or the PS3’s triggers). The rest of your arsenal is accessible, of course, but you must pause and go into a menu in order to get to them. That can break up the fun flow of an otherwise high-octane encounter, and picking the right tool for the job during the fight was something I found myself avoiding. As you might expect, though, these are non-issues on the PC, where the number keys offer instant access to vigors and the mouse scroll wheel zips through your full list of guns.

So is there or isn't there a two-weapon limit?

THE VERDICT
Going in, I had to question whether Infinite could live up to the BioShock name after having discarded its signature world of Rapture, with its Big Daddies and Little Sisters and warring philosophies, and starting from scratch. On the way out, I'm forced to seriously question which is the better game.

Roughly on par with Bioshock?
I'm officially not interested in the game, now.

Really? That's good. Why wasn't this been said by IR? Why is the review acting like it's known information when all vids of the game showed the limitation in play? Is the limit removed in the PC version only?

Have you played the original Bioshock on consoles? It's that same functionality and weapon swapping mechanic.

If you tap the right bumper, it goes to your previous weapon. If you hold down the bumper, the game temporarily pauses and a radial selection pops up so you can select your weapon. As soon as you release the bumper, the game unpauses.

Edit: Actually I forget right now if tapping in Bioshock 1 would cycle through all weapons or just your previous. I actually never used that all that much. I would always bring up the radial selection.

There isn't a two weapon limit.

There isn't. On consoles you can have two weapons and two vigors equipped at once for quick swapping but everything is available through a menu, just slower to get to. On PC you can access them all through your scroll wheel.

All I want to know is how many Dorito Popes it got.

I really hope they do a good job with the UE3 DX11 optimization in this game. Still pissed about Arkham City, which was never fixed either.

Ugh. Really? See, for me, that's enough a reason to not play a game like this on PC. Think of all the times Booker will enter an amazing new locale and stare/gaze around in cinematic wonderment! Not on pc he won't, yo.

Eh? why wouldn't he? the PC version version of RE6 is filled with that kind of shit

this isn't out yet is it? Any console impressions (the IGN was too vague), especially in terms of graphics? Seems like it's bad even in terms of console. I read some one that compared it to Dishonored in terms of clarity and graphics, which would be fine for me.

I think I'm skipping this at 60 bucks. I got bored with Bioshock at about 3/4 of the game and found the last quarter really unfun. Bioshock 2 however, I loved, although I did get that for 20 bucks, and the first at launch.

I'll bite at 30.

It's kind of funny that 2K gave IGN an exclusive first and, despite the 9.4, they basically said it was a bit sucky on consoles. Seems like that could potentially put a bit of a damper on console sales. Maybe they're regretting handing out that exclusive.

I'm on a black out, but do all the guns have aim down sights? I'm not a particular fan of ads, but just wondering

Yes. You press R3 to aim down sights.

Actually on consoles you don't have all the weapons available through a menu. You have to find the weapons and pick them up and then drop your existing weapons. Vigors however, you have access to all of them, all of the time.

Oh that sucks. I thought it was the way I posted due to the IGN review phrasing.

It does suck. However the game is very good at putting the weapons you need to finish a particular fight in a visible location. There were very few times when I thought "I really need a _____ right now".

That's clumsy. :/

It's one of the worst aspect of 2-weapon limits.

I am however impressed that they didn't saddle the PC with these limitations. In almost every other case, the PC would have been similarly limited to create more parity between the platforms.

Oh man... 9.4 contra 9.5? And people wonder why devs would bother spending one more second on the pc port of a game.

so when ryan says your arsenal is available at anytime he is lying?
or are you really just focusing on the hotkey mechanic. you can only have 2 weapons hotkeyed, is different than having only 2 weapons at all.

Yes. I just beat the game last night. You have two vigors equipped that you swap by tapping L2. If you hold L2 you can show a circle with all vigors and map the 2.

You have two weapons equipped that you swap by tapping R2. However, there is no wheel that appears for holding R2 that allows you to select from all your weapons.

That really is very bizarre. I don't know why they'd have a wheel for the vigors but not for the weapons. Didn't Bioshock on consoles have both?

thank you for your input.
that would be an error and misleading on the part of the ign reviewer then i suppose. assuming you are in the right, how the heck does mcaffrey not mention that lol

The reviewer did mention it; he just said the outright opposite:

IGN said:

I have no idea how you even make that mistake. Did he not bother to ever switch out weapons and simply assumed that option was available? Or is it perhaps a menu option distinct from the radial menu that Maddog missed?

I'm intrigued by this mainly because it would mean a difference between the PC and console versions that is very unusual to see these days.

Very disappointing if that's all 1999 mode is. They definitely talked it up big time. It's the only reason I even bought the thing.

Just checked again and it's definitely not a menu option. I could be blind but I really don't think it's an option. What might of happened is the pause menu shows you all of your guns and the reviewer just assumed you could equip them from there but that is definitely not the case.

Edit: When you pick up new guns you very clearly see your old gun drop.
