Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

This is the one criticism I just can't really understand. Maybe I'm just incredibly oblivious to this kind of stuff, but I just can't notice it. Any examples?
Another thing, and maybe this isn't really Patrick per se, but the Bombcast has a different flow now that it has 5 people on. It doesn't go at the same pace especially when it comes to the comedic parts of the podcast.

It's like when you have a group of friends and then someone brings in someone new, even if you like the guy the dynamic of the group changes because there is another personality that is represented. It's not Patricks fault, and I don't think it would be better if you swapped out Patrick for someone else but I liked the pace of the Vinny/Brad/Ryan/Jeff podcasts better.

~14:14 in the Ken Levine interview.

pissed me off so much when i watched the interview. i like patrick, he is a great addition to the gb crew. but please patrick: let the people finish their sentences. you just dont interrupt someone like ken fucking levine and make him look like an idiot.

Hmm, I could see that, but honestly I hear that kind of stuff in a normal conversation it's really hard for me to see it as something abnormal. It's just a way to bring your opinion and flow onto the flow of the conversation.

Like, the other bomb cast members do it all of the time, though most of the time it's to insert their joke based on that moment usually.

An interview is not exactly a conversation though.
I'm watching that video for Levine's answers, not Patrick's.

I like the guy, btw.

Wait, why should anyone give TWD a chance? It was a blatantly obvious Activision licensed cash-in with no effort put behind it and a really sad attempt to get people to think it was the good Walking Dead game, and they didn't show any of it for the longest time.

The reason I watched and enjoyed the GB Levine interview and didn't enjoy any of the other million Levine interviews being given right now is because it's much more casual and conversational.

Why? He has a point.

I think they would've come to the same conclusion anyway, but they were really dismissive of the game right from the get go.

I am honestly more offended by Patrick's grouping in of the comic with the show in terms of quality.

If you are reading bro, the comic is more like the Telltale game than the show has ever been. I urge you to read more of it.

I do agree that the silly trollish comments should stop. Valid criticism does however not have to stop, which often gets brushed aside as bashing. He does blend in well with the crew, but it truly annoys me when listening to the bombcast or anything else where he interrupts everyone 100 times while they are in mid sentence, with the danger of sounding like an asshole myself now : it really makes me dislike most of the stuff he's in.

patty tends to over explain and loves to flaunt his knowledge about stuff. he will cut off other people mid sentence to give his version of whats being discussed and it can be annoying but his traits for maximun detail is what makes him good at sourcing info about news stories. with the more casual content like quick looks he simply needs to hold back a bit but he's not an anal wart like the losers on youtube would lead you to believe.

I like his more conversational interviewing style. You can read a hundred samey Ken Levine Q and A interviews all over the gaming sites right now.

Kudos to GB for going for something slightly different (Jeff is also always inserting a bit more of himself into interviews than is usual).

but they were really dismissive of the game right from the get go.
Like it's a piece of shit shovelware title that wouldn't of been dismissed from the start if it was anybody else?

Get pissed off when Jeff or Ryan are immediately dismissive of some JRPG crap that isn't their thing, but don't defend this.

Why not though? Conversations and opinions can bring out angles that might not get approached with just preprepared questions. I can see wanting a tight package for 3-5 min chunks but when an interview is 40 minutes long and the folks on camera aren't all total strangers, I appreciate some back and forth. It's natural.

I don't love that style of interviewing as a hard and fast rule - for example, Terry Gross of NPR is tough to listen to because she uses her own opinions and experiences as jump off points for leading questions almost exclusively. But Patrick is not nearly that, he's fine.

Brad is still the best interviewer of the GB crew for those 3-5 min hits. He's a pro at that.

I don't see it. Patrick just interrupted him to make the same point Ken himself was about to make. The content itself doesn't change. It's rude to interrupt people in non professional settings as well.

It just doesn't make for fun watching. Either go in with an open mind or don't bother.

Brad and Patrick giving it an honest shot and then declaring it a piece of shit shovelware would've been better. Alternatively, completely ignoring it instead of giving an Activision budget title 30 minutes of their time would also have been acceptable. But since they decided to cover it, I can say that they could've done a better job.

Then again, mediocre/boring games are the worst to QL. Nothing offensively bad to make fun of, not engaging enough to get legitimate enjoyment out of it.

Get pissed off when Jeff or Ryan are immediately dismissive of some JRPG crap that isn't their thing, but don't defend this.
I don't think Stuburns or I are pissed off about it, really.

You don't really do that in an interview though. Also, no one wants to hear someone comparing the plights of game journalists to those of game developers in an interview like that.

In my opinion, Kevin VanOrds Interview was much better. He asked few but concise questions and then just let Levine talk as much as he wanted to. The result is a way more interesting interview: http://www.gamespot.com/bioshock-infinite/videos/the-break-room-interviews-ken-levine-6405619/

Interrupting and answering a question not directed at you is never appropriate, regardless of the situation.

That part wasn't really doing that though. I went back to relisten to that part, the question was started by Patrick asking how long can Kevin and irrational can do what they're currently doing, then Kevin went on to answer how he feels he has to consider not only his future, which was interrupted by a funny bit involving Jeff and Kevin on how he'll be misquoted, then proceeded to talk about how he has to consider the future of gaming, which Patrick interrupted by trying to bring up what is going on on the horizon of gaming like the ouya. Which isn't him trying to answer the question as much as it is just trying to bring in new perspectives into the conversation to be discussed.

Now I feel weird for analysing the conversation like that.

.

Some of the best quicklooks are taking complete dumps on awful games, or finding out an "awful game" is shockingly mediocre instead of trash. (Examples of the second would be this/battleship).

Welcome to every GB thread Patrick derail

you realize the quicklook isn't their very first exposure to the game, right?
They mention the trailer with the early footage that looked terrible, but I'm not aware of anything else. I doubt Activision is showing off their awful budget line games at events or somesuch.

Well, I guess that's true. It didn't work on this one, though.

Because they didn't lean into how terrible it was. Instead it became a conversation about The Walking Dead franchise and Telltale's involvement.

edit: which made it pretty tolerable, more tolerable than the usual Jeff or Vinnyless quicklook of a bad game.

double edit: seriously now I'm just thinking back through all their shovelware quicklooks and your opinion perplexes me more and more.

We don't get pages of ruminations on Ryan's etiquette on camera, that's for sure.

Examples?

I'm not sure what you mean but I think Patrick interrupting interview guests mid sentence is a bit more of an annoyance than whatever the hell Ryan does on camera during TNT.

Where people dismiss legitimate criticisms as some kind of vendetta against Patrick?

Criticism are good, but it's always nicer to have examples to dicuss rather than just a pile on.

well, ryan has yet to call nolan north an asshole on camera, to be fair.

Wasn't that explained on the bomb cast as a joke from what happened pre-interview?

I could be remembering wrongly.

They have a "shrink shack" featurette on wednesday where all they do is play games they didn't cover and immediately diss them.

The legendary Gameroom quicklooks consists of Jeff and Ryan going in immediately expecting the next half hour of 'classic' titles to be a dreadful experience.

Yep, that was the explanation. But I still believe there was some actual animosity there.

I will say that Patrick has already become much better with not talking over everyone on the bombcast. He definitely took that criticism to heart and I'm thankful for his contribution to the site since he broadened the taste of everyone on the crew. I think it's because of Patrick that even Jeff warmed up to indie games in general. And as a Souls-games fan, seeing him getting into MH and pulling Vinny with him is awesome.

They also had news about the leaked "alpha" trailer that looked terrible.

If you are telling me that these guys didn't know the quality of the game going in then loooool.

No man. They had never even heard of the game before going into the quicklook. And they didn't give a fair shake because, uh, their clear anti-Activision bias. I mean, they probably saw the Activision logo on the box.

If you are telling me that in their small and open office, that one of them never mentioned in a conversation involving Brad or Patrick about this Walking Dead game in the context that it was going to be a obvious and terrible cash in, then you are being intellectually dishonest.

I'm guessing it's.

1.) He's the newest.

2.) There's a age disparity, and he didn't grow up with the same things the rest of the crew did. No WWF memories, no love for the G & R.

3.) He looks like a hipster, he plays indie games, he writes articles about feminism.

4.) Overexposure, for a while Patrick was in everything.

I wish bad stuff would quit happening to him, dude almost got killed from a pothole ffs. He kinda gets

I hope this is a troll. Otherwise loooool.
A major thing is that he's just not entertaining like the other bombcast members and that's important in a personality driven site like this. I've never laughed at anything patrick has ever said. I do not hate the guy though, he covers a lot of games that would normally get dismissed and he puts work in.

I've listened to Patrick since his 1up Show / 1up Podcast days and believe me he's come a long way. No one annoyed me more than he did, frothing at the mouth talking over everyone, saying HD didn't matter, acting smug like he had all the answers.

He's mellowed out quite a bit. I think he brings a good perspective to the crew. A lot of times the others blow over things, and are pretty dismissive. Patrick really cares about this shit and sparks a lot of discussions that would have never been present.

If I have any issue with Patrick its that I have zero interest in any of the games he's interested in. If there's been one change in Giant Bomb since Patrick joined its been the coverage of indie games, and I just have next to no interest in just about any of them.

Anyone know if the panel was recorded/streamed, and if/where/when I can find such a thing?

Didn't see any mention of such on the site itself (probably my google-fu failing me), but I swear I remember the Prime 2012 stream being available at some point.

"Hey guys Patrick here with a quicklook of generic as fuck 2d indie platformer #76452 the gimmick in this one is X!"

At this point indie platformers are more generic than COD clones.
