Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

Gaf now approves of him because he plays the indie titles and other niche titles that drive a lot of posts on here. He parrots back your opinions, you feel vindicated, and suddenly he's the best. He is insufferable.

I don't play half the shit Patrick talks about (barely a quarter), but he brings something else to the table that the other guys don't and it is yes, a bit of inexerpience, but what comes with that inexperience within the industry and with industry professionals with double digits under their belts is sincerity and wonderment in the product they're delivering and that is something that you don't get the bulk of the time with vets who've been through the grinder and come out cynical and hard to the world around them.

I dunno about insufferable but he could use a lil more.. I dunno.. life experience or sumtin. I liked when Levine in that interview would keep reminding him how young he was.

well he's young, duh... that shit comes with time. It is and isn't a valid point to take because yea. that's just how shit rolls out. he's not going to be a jeff because he hasn't had the time or experience with these developers or the way they approach subjects, but that is just how things work out ya know?

It's like asking the sun to be less sunny... put on some sunglasses and just forget about it.

Jeff rapping 24 hours to live was the best thing.

Oh man, what? Link please?

Edit: Damn, I misread this as "Jeff rapping for 24 hours..."

You talk about him like he's still a kid; the dude is pushing 30 and in many respects still has the social quirks one attributes to a teenager. But of course he has flaws. They may be more or less pronounced to some people than others but they do exist. The recent mythologising of Patrick into "the guy that gives games a chance" is just as insufferable and misguided an attempt to quell discussion and opinion as the people that present their personal hatred of him as the totality of his character.

Giant Bomb is community driven, which is a shame because some (I emphasize 'some') fans are pretty shitty. And I don't mean creepy like this thread on weekends, like shitty shitty what with that Skullgirls piece and the absolutely horrendous comments it got.

It's also why TNTs that don't involve the fans are the best.

There is no need to be polite about it mate. The GB community is the worst I have experienced in a long time.

It has been mentioned here before, but it appears that the GB community is built upon the foundation of a young core. A young core who are rude, childish and quite frankly obsessed with the team members. Immature sycophants so to speak. Of course there will be good members. I'm not saying there isn't, but they have become lost among the white noise.

While all gaming sites have arsehats I think it is a shame that the guys have got this level of immaturity in their community. They deserve better. I wouldn't even think of posting let alone read the comment section, yet I quite happily do so here, on Eurogamer, and Dtoid. And the chat during a TNT or Live show? Fuck that.

While I don't agree with Patrick, and there are many holes to his knowledge and logic I do think people get a bit personal when attacking him. Nothing wrong stating a disagreement, but no need for the attacks he gets.

There are no indications that the guy is a dick. While it really is impossible to tell real life characters from their online persona he comes across as a decent guy.

Utter bullshit. The overwhelming majority of the GB community is competely fine. There are bad apples but throwing the whole community under the bus is just as wrong as it always was when you and a few others in this thread brought it up.

One of the bad apples managed to make the news.

I bet he had a GAF account too lol
Luckily that deranged guy posted hardly anything on GB and his last comment was 2 years and 3 months ago. Oh and he also has a Steam profile.

I guess I've been unlucky in my travels on GB. My most recent experience being a guy being an arse about 8-4 play because it wasn't "GB" content. Every time I go there there someone is being a dick. That is my impression.

Someone probably was a dick, but most users aren't. I think I've seen that one comment you're referring to (it was posted when the new site went up and the podcasts started to appear as news on the frontpage) and it got called out quickly by other commenters, informing him who 8-4 is and why they're on GB.

edit: found it
"I still haven't figured out who these people are and why they are on Giant Bomb."

"Ditto. Although I think it's worth having more Japanese games discussion on GB than there is now, this podcast is not at all cohesive with the rest of the site."

"They're friends of people on the site (most notably Patrick, I believe) and were brought in to cover a niche that isn't covered on the rest of the site: Japanese games, and Japanese things. They are a group of translators who started out as Journalists/Critics here in the West, and made their way East for the translation gig."

"They're the best japanese focused podcast around. Don't worry, they don't take any effort from CoD or Halo. They, like, do their own thing."

"Actually there's a video feature of theirs on Giant Bomb (Brad visited them when GB was last in Japan), and they are on Giant Bomb because they needed a new host for their podcast. "

Yeah, the GB community is really horrible. Users even reply politely to a slightly dickish comment. It's unbearable.

Bedlam, as great as your time is in Monster Truck-Bomb or whatever microcommunity you're in is, the community that someone just watching the videos and reading the articles (this can't be a small part of their userbase) is subjected to simply by half the screen always showing the latest or first comment in their new design is fucking terrible. That part is opposite to GAF: on GAF, you'd browse GAF and mentally note the interesting and deep discussion and then join before realising there's actually a high ratio of idiots who would respond in rage comics if they had the time.

It's called "the forums".

News comments sections always tend to attract more idiots than the actual forums... it's like that on pretty much every site. But even the news/video comments aren't nearly as bad on GB as some of you guys make them out to be. Even when things get heated (Patrick's sexism articles, for example), most comments are actually rather polite and reasonable.

Dude, I don't mean to be rude. But you are trying hard to defend the community. You didn't need to go out of your way to find the comment I was referring to. I don't think that was it anyway.

Thanks anyway. I get you like the community. I really don't, so lets agree to disagree:p

Yeah let's all agree that all of the communities around Giant Bomb are terrible.
That includes Giant Bomb's forums, Something Awful and Neogaf.

I will defend Gaf to the death if anyone tries to say anything bad about it or its users.

Go and browse through the comments for some recent articles, news, videos or whatever and then tell me how terrible they are.

You are trying too hard to shit on the community. The picture you paint of it is just doesn't reflect reality. That's all I'm saying.

I like how Ryan revealed he'd reviewed a couple Monster Hunter games for Gamespot.

Patrick's reaction was pretty good.

A little weird to see Ryan tear in to Monster Hunter for "feeling like a Dreamcast game" like it was some kind of decrepit ancient relic in... y'know... 2004. Maybe two years out from the end of the Dreamcast's arguably short lifespan.

The way his review references it you'd swear he was talking about a Sega Genesis addon for how old he makes it sound.

Eurogamer has some amazingly bad commenters as well. Just look at some of their Digital Foundry articles.

Also, Monster Hunter is just straight up a billion times better than PSO, so he's wrong about that anyways.

No podcast...?

Podcast is up, homie. Has been for a good long while.

I'm sure someone has brought this up before but watching the Giant Bomb PAX panels I have come to the realization that Patrick is starting to look disturbingly like Screech.

Cannot. Unsee.

If Divekick isnt $5 then someone is really pushing there luck.

I agree with this in theory, I'm glad Jeff kinda called it out on the podcast that if it all ends up being just a one note joke then they done fucked up.

It's interesting hearing them try to talk about the 'mind game' intricacies but at first blush it does feel more like a dollar iPhone game with a funny gimmick. Sounding like Iron Galaxy are thinking about it though so hopefully they'll evade that.

Jeff and Ryan talking about getting those 'fight sticks' is crazy pants though, Jeff will drop money on literally a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g.

Norm is awesome, I hate you people.
