I guess I’ll be the one to say it: I was not okay with the gender situation in the VIP area at the minecraft party.

Overheard that these women were paid $300/hr.

C418, the musician on Minecraft, had tweeted something earlier about it but it seems to have been deleted since then.

Lots of other stuff on Twitter too, this is just a couple excerpts. Beyond fucked up.

What the hell is going on?

I dont understand

if they were strippers or something like that hired to dance/perform on a private party: that's just fine, what's the big deal?

if they were just regular women/escorts who were just "hired" to talk to people then uh, guess that's kinda weird

either way I really dont see the big deal here

I don't really understand what exactly wrong is with that. It's a norm at corporate (Big Banks) after hour parties.

How does it being "the norm" make it okay? Are you people not fucking human beings?

Big fucking whoop. Its not like they were paid to have their tits hanging out the whole time.

It was probably a total sausage fest there. So he brought some girls to balance it out. Would it have been better if they were paid $40?

Truth.

OP is trying to equate this situation with the IGDA party snafu.

2 completely different situations all together.

I don't see the issue either if it was a private party with his Minecraft/Mojang mates out looking for a good time.

I think it would probably make some other industry women at the party feel a bit uncomfortable, with the suggestion that women are there just to look pretty and make the men feel good.

This is where this whole debate stems from - there is a big debate going on at the moment about women in the industry and whether the industry is welcoming towards women or not, takes them seriously or not.

Not enough context is provided. I take this "news" as Mojang hired some women via an entertainment agency to socialize and dance at his party in order to prevent it from being a giant sausage party. These women aren't there against their will. Nobody is being forced against their will and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't mind working the same gig if you got paid those kind of hourly fees.

This sounds like a bunch of ridiculous internet white knighting.

Wait a sec, the tweet and context of the conversation is they hired escorts or strippers/dancers to just socialize and be at the party, the dancing part could mean they dance with random people and get them jolly and such.

I don't think they were paid to simply dance in front of dudes.

Well done Noach

They're probably not there against their will, they're being paid. But the bigger problem here is how the video games industry views women as objects to be bought and thrown around for men to oogle over. There is NO way a woman would feel safe here.

Can you elaborate a bit more on this? Do you think the dancers were being exploited, perhaps they were dancing out of economic necessity (?), because otherwise it's hard to see why you are calling this "beyond fucked up"?

Yeah, I don't want to be labelled as inhuman, but I thought this was kinda normal for big corporate parties.

Dishonest and maybe kinda sleazy, sure. Probably suited more for a car show than Minecraft.

Everyone in the industry is hiring women for their parties, what are the odds of them hiring me for their games?

As a girl, I don't get what's inhuman about all of this, it's not like the girls were forced, they were paid, and not so bad.

I kind of doubt Notch went out and organized this party himself. In fact, Mojang probably just paid some local company to organize a party for them. Not that this makes it right or anything but to blame Notch directly for it at this point seems to be jumping the gun a bit.

Nothing wrong with that, no doubt people will conjure up some faux outrage though to make themselves feel morally superior and turn nothing into something.

I'm sorry but your arguments are ridiculous and this has little to do with the video game industry's views on women.

I don't understand how people could possibly be okay with this just because, "Oh well, that always happens, that's just how it is, why fight it?" Ask yourself if that logic makes ANY sense whatsoever.

what?

it's a private party by a company. It's people hiring women who do this thing for a living, and paying them, for what they do and know how to do

they are working, the women are getting paid for what they decided to do and the people at the party are getting the other end of the service, as it happens in any other context

why is it suddenly just wrong in videogames?

This sounds like a bunch of ridiculous internet white knighting.

I don't think the whining is out of white knighting for the women being paid to be there. I'm sure they had a good time and love that work.

I think it's more about industry women attending these parties, and how it feels for them when as a minority, they see other women hired in as decorative baubles to provide eye candy for the men.

I think people are a bit more sensitive about this stuff now given the debates going on about it.
