GDC: Halo 4 Post Mortem starts right now.

Good thing for 343 they didn't do a spring or summer beta for Halo 4.
I would have probably cancelled my preorder.

Halo 4 it is a good game but it isn't halo 1,2 or 3.
Aargh dont even know what to feel anger or sadness that such a big part of my gaming life died.

I know that feeling. If it weren't called Halo and was reskinned it would be a decent game. However it's not Halo at all. I love the franchise however for me it died with Halo: Reach. As far as I'm concerned everything post 343 doesn't exist. That simple for me.

So, how can they make it more accessible?

They just need to keep moving towards the Cod formulae. They took some great strides towards this with halo 4, introducing things like sprint for everyone, hit markers, kill streaks, immediate spawn, and create a class. I would imagine that we will see a refinement (closer copying of call of duty) for the kill streaks system in halo 5, being able to customise it and having vehicles and orbital strikes called in, not just weapons.

Halo was one of the IP that really chained me to the xbox brand/console gaming.
Now im not even sure i will even need a next gen console day one.

Im pretty sure cod craze really started with mw2.

All my friends abandoned Halo 3 when CoD4 was released and have never looked back and we played a ton of Halo 2 on og xbox.

Partly due to the progression system on the CoD games but mostly because CoD is easy and simple.

I'm glad the game has been removed from competitive circles and is no longer being catered towards hardcore traditionalists. The game has seen far too little evolution since the first game released, and that's due in great part to the developers having to cater towards those two groups at every turn.

Yeah, I think I'm done with Halo.

Reach almost killed the series for me but I decided to give 343 a chance with Halo 4.

Instead of addressing the community's complaints they just doubled down on all of the things I hated about Reach.

The story went in a direction I didn't like either so there isn't even that to look forward to with Halo 5.

Commence the hate on the best mp experience after halo ce.

Only if you play SWAT to be fair.

I don't enjoy the rest. Bt then, I don't enjoy traditional Halo multiplayer anymore anyway, since well before 4. SWAT was a godsend. It's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Halo 3 and COD4 fought neck and neck for the top spot.

I looked up some charts and Halo 3 was even competing with mw2.
And just like i remembered Halo 3 was top spot when cod4 came out.

source? I was trying to look it up on Major Nelson but that's proving to be a pain

On release this may have been the case but after a few months I remember CoD4 finally over taking Halo 3 for good.

At any rate when 343i was i development with Halo 4 at least 2 CoD games were charting higher then Reach and I guess they figured the progression system was one of the primary reasons for this.

Here went as far as 2009 ish

Halo 3 had some online legs that is for sure.

So by "contextualize our universe", they really mean they're going to remove enough halo/genre specific context such that they can make it accessible to the absolute lowest common denominator.

edit: I would really like to hear what was said on that slide.

Halo 4 single player was alright, but the multiplayer is just fucking terrible. I'm happy to see the tremendous drop off in player counts and to read the backlash. Most of the changes make no sense at all for a Halo game, hell not even for any balanced multiplayer game.

They should just change the name of multiplayer from Infinity to "Clusterfuck" to be appropriate for what it is.

LOL. Just amazing.

Halo just lacks depth to me. I know not every game is Fallout. Borderlands isn't Fallout, but it has far more depth than Halo and it's just as arcadey and fun to play. The whole "go here, shoot this, push that, return, go there, shoot that, push this button" is just really zzzzzz imo. The fun of Halo for me had been firefight and they ditched it in 4 and replaced it with the god-awful Spartan Ops. Blech.

I'm so glad I didn't care for the franchise as of H4, because it really sounds like 343i have no idea what they're doing and are blindly chasing after the CoD crowd, destroying their franchise in the process.

COD4 and Halo 3 were going back and forth for most of the year

Jul 30th 2008

For the second week in a row, Halo 3 has successfully defended its golden "most played Xbox Live game" crown from the angry, desperate hands of Call of Duty 4. Major Nelson just posted the Xbox Live activity for the week of July 21st, where GHIII makes the list at 5th most played game, Gears of War at 4th, GTAIV at 3rd, CoD4 at a respectable 2nd and Halo 3 sitting atop everyone in 1st. Looks to us like we have a heated Xbox Live popularity contest a brewing. Quick, pop some popcorn!

Campaign was not without its faults, but it was a very good game. Compare it to 90% of other games released in the same genre; it's better.

Graphics and reviews make a game? Ok.
Also the only thing good about the graphics is the lighting, everything else, especially texures and skyboxes, is terrible.
You forgot about the godawful LOD system and the serious sandbox cuts they had to make their fancy graphical elements work (such as severely truncated level scope -- playing in tubes is fun, right?).

The best looking thing about Halo 4 is the cutscenes, and they beat the in-game graphics by a goddamn country mile. The game itself is mediocre at best.

Halo 3 held the crown in 2009 too:

It was in 2010 when Reach came out that Black Ops obliterated it. I was one of the hardcore fans that played a ton more Black Ops than Halo Reach so I wasn't even surprised.

This... everyone who praises Halo 4's graphics forgets that it was gameplay they sacrificed for those graphics. The art isnt even that amazing, I prefer Bioshock Infinite which has tons of amazing things to look at everywhere than Halo 4, which was pretty but had dull art direction. Graphics without good art is not worth it, especially when they made so many cutbacks to accomodate those graphics.

As 343i have like unlimited funds and low chance of flopping commercially for the next Halo they should go full on back to basics.

I mean remove armor abilities, sprinting, everything and just remake Halo 2/CE MP completely.

Just to see if it retains players or if the franchise is just suffering from fatigue.

Yeah, no, this isn't going to happen.
