Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny talk Shenmue III strategy?!

People talk about Shenmue 3 this and that, but in order to make it successful they will need to reintroduce 1 and 2 to a new generation of players, and I don't think an HD port for the next gen will do it. In my opinion they will need to remake both games or do some heavy upgrades, not only in graphics but the gameplay too.

With the existence of kickstarter Yu Suzuki has a completely viable way to gauge and to demonstrate to potential financiers how much demand exists for Shenmue 3. He just needs to get the ball rolling. But considering his lackluster game output in the last decade or so I don't know if he is even up for a medium - high budget game development any more.

With any luck Mark Cerny is trying to persuade Yu Suzuki not to do Shenmue 3 and is trying to get him to do a new next-gen arcade racing game instead.

That's not even a difficult question. It's like, if you had to choose one to die, would it be your own kid or this duck?

Bad analogy, because it depends on the duck. Kids can be pretty annoying. On the other hand, Donald Duck sucks, but if it's like... Daffy Duck, or Scrooge McDuck...

no need to reintroduce the 1st and 2nd game. They could go the same path Bioware took when it brought Mass Effect 2 to PS3, sum up the story and so on. Besides this, at that time you could play Shenmue 2 without knowing much of the 1st one. Ryo had just moved to a different country and this was an excuse to introduce a whole new set of characters. By the end of Shenmue 2, this happens again (Shenmue 1: Japan; Shenmue 2: HongKong; Shenmue 3: mainland China?).
And the gameplay is perfect as it is!

Please no. I hated the way they handled Shenmue in Shenmue 2X.

Shenmue is an immersive experience, and a video reel or comic really is not the best way to convey that.

I started playing Shenmue today, I gotta agree with you. Every day when you wake up in the world, the characters around town become more and more familiar, the place starts to feel like a second home, it's an experience that a video can't really show.

I gotta say that the voice acting is SO BAD, so so very bad that it becomes good, it's hilarious, I have laughed out loud several times today haha.

The movement controls are pretty bad, like driving a slow vehicle, but you get used to it. But the actual fighting it's pretty damn good in comparison.

I'm pretty happy to have started playing Shenmue finally after all these years.

Japanese version is better in that regard.

Yeah I know, I've seen youtube videos and it's a world of difference, anyway Shenmue 2 is in Japanese, so it will be a different experience.

Still, I'm enjoying the bad voice acting, it's entertaining. :)

i heard it is pretty bad in japanese, too, but I wasnt able to tell and I enjoyed that it felt even more like a foreign adventure like this!

Lol yeah, but for people like us it was 'better' because we don't know any better,

Having said that, I honestly didn't mind the english VA in Shenmue on Dreamcast, however, it went crazy in Shenmue IIx. Shenmue II had some decent VA with the likes of Ren and whatnot.

Definitely need Japanese VA.

Controls were normal for the time it was released; slightly better than tank controls, but it is sometimes a pain to get used to. Voice acting has a certain charm but objectively I guess one could conclude it's poor. I happen to find it hilariously bad, making it good.

Indeed it does have a certain charm, it's still providing me hours of entertainment. :)

And yes now that I remember Resident Evil etc, I guess the controls were pretty good, I've gotten used to it now, it definitely feels much better when your fighting thou.

Zelda: Ocarina Of Time controls was excellent for the time now that I think about it.

Hmm I've yet to meet Ren, is he in Shenmue 1?

Shenmue II.

Bad ass character. The way him and Ryo develop their relationship is awesome, and some of the cutscenes between them look like they're right out of Police Story or something. So good.

I could never get over Shenmue II in Japanese. I know that's how it should be played. But the different voice actor from the first game was annoying.

Bad English dub all the way.

The only thing about the voice acting that was disappointing for me was that everyone in Hong Kong and mainland China spoke Japanese. Why was Ryo even able to communicate? He never even bothered to speak in English to his friend Tom.

English in Hong Kong would make some sense, but having Ryo struggle to communicate, having more expressive characters and gestures, even have him speak some Chinese would have added a lot to the experience IMO.

If they should change one thing in the HD remakes, it would be just that.

Yeah that definitely sounds weird, especially since I'm playing Shenmue 1 now and there was a big focus on finding Chinese people who could read Chinese etc

I guess they didn't know how to get around the fact that Ryo can't speak Chinese?

I think Sony has enough on their plates with The Last Gardian and FFVSXIII (if those rumours are true) :P

They could do a multipack to seduce people to buy PS4

VersusXIII, The Last Guardian, Shenmue 3 and Agent all in one package.

Thinking about the direction Kojima is taking Metal Gear Solid V - Open world, characters on 24 hour cycles, you choose what time of day to perform objectives etc.

Seems like it is aiming for a Shenmue style concept. So maybe now that sandbox and open world is coming into fashion, Shenmue with interactive cutscenes replacing QTE, a focus on the martial arts training at your own pace, and a detailed 1980's china to explore may work better now, than it did then.

It worked fine then, the problem wasn't Shenmue, the problem was the PS2. But I agree with you.

Agree too.

I think they would have to modernize the game a little to make it work in a modern context. Obviously, no more tank controls, and try to get away from QTEs in sequences where it would probably work in real-time (such as carrying boxes in a warehouse). But I still think QTEs would have their place.

I love Shenmue and I can't stand Mark Cenry. I'm so TORN.

i have no problem with the japanese voices for 2 but i just can't bring myself to play the first one in japanese.

I wish I could, but the amount of work is too much. You need to patch a Japanese copy of the game or something. Kudos to the people that put it together though.

You could end the previous storyline and open up a new one at the same time.

10 years older Ryo's child is kidnapped by Lan Di's son.

Flashbacks to how Ryo eventually killed Lan Di.

Etc.

I think we all just want to finish this chapter in our gaming life and move on, nobody's ready for that type of nonsense. We'd finish this saga when? When we're near death?
