Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

Should I play DP first or watch the Endurance Runs and then play?

Honestly it isnt a good game. Its enjoyable for its atmosphere and its sense of style and place. However, I cant recommend playing the game. Watching the endurance runs (or just jeff and vinny's run) will allow you to appreciate the game despite it being terrible from a gameplay perspective

DP and Spec Ops are Gaf 'love' games I'll never get. It's one thing to be inspired by a movie or tv series, but those games felt like plagiarism of Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness and Twin Peaks.

Now I actually enjoyed playing Spec-Ops because it had ok gameplay, but a really good story. I don't know if I would be able to say the same for DP if I played it

I think Spec Ops takes as much from Apocalypse Now as that movie took from Heart of Darkness. They are certainly inspired by the previous work, but it's not like they made the exact same thing in a different setting.

Pretty much every major game is inspired by a movie and/or other type of media. Uncharted = Indiana Jones, Halo = Aliens etc.

But Nathan Drake is a little different from Indy in personality, companions, and so on. York is pretty much a skin for Agent Cooper.

So sad the Vinny likely won't be in on the discussion... Seriously fucking bumming me out, his enjoyment of game narrative would be so beneficial to it.

Patrick added an article about Monster Hunter and it isn't bad imo

http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/david-vs-goliath/1100-4613/

Reading and watching videos about Monster Hunter, I can't help to think that Sega's Phantasy Star Online stole some mechanics from it.

Which makes me baffled to think that people think Monster Hunter is impenetrable, specially when PSO was so successful back on the Dreamcast.

The only big difference is while PSO is more about luck of the draw when it comes to item drops for your upgrade path, Monster Hunter relies more in crafting. If that's better or worse is a personal preference, but I don't see how it's impenetrable. On PSO, you had to resort to online guilds to find out which monster will drop the next weapon or armor for your class. That's not too different for Monster Hunter, where you need to know who the fuck drops the Sharpened Claws or whatever the fuck item you need for your next item to be crafted.

I mean, sure, the game doesn't hold your hand every single step of the way like todays games usually do. I've never played Monster Hunter before and, when I borrowed a copy of it for my PSP I didn't understand a thing. Howver, I wasn't really paying attention to the text and just wanted to see what the game was all about. I tried again since following Patrick's experience (And watching the quicklook) and everything makes much more sense to me - specially when I noticed that the game is a PSO-kind like of game, as opposed to a "Pokemon" kind of game (for a lack of better comparison).

If they delayed it surely they would lose enthusiasm for the discussion. I beat the game last week and I lost interest in continuously visiting the spoilers thread after a few days. Everyday they don't record it is a day that they might hash it out between themselves without microphones recording.

No worries, he'll have plenty of chances on the main show. I bet they'll let him discuss it with a warning.

They way patrick describes monster hunter reminds me of Raids in WOW

From what little I've seen of cooperative play in MonHun I think that's a good analogy.

I'm not sure I can handle a Bioshock Infinite spoilercast because the story really struck a chord in me. Hearing comparisons to Mass Effect 3 or Lost will not sit well with me.

Ha. Slow on watching the GDC stuff, the Fez dude walking across the live stream with that sign made me laugh real hard.

What am I exactly missing out on?

As I watch this endurance run all I see is butt fugly graphics, a lot of load times, poor/no physics, bad camera, boring combat, nonsensical quick time events, bad character models/animation and on an on and on with the suckiness.

You dun messed up bro.

It is really the other way around since PSO was out long before the first MH. They are definitely in the same genre and style though.

If they delay it then it will never happen.

Not really, they could very easily just do it next week. But yeah, there's a good chance apathy would strike.

But Nathan Drake is a little different from Indy in personality, companions, and so on. York is pretty much a skin for Agent Cooper.

Early on it's clearly inspired by/copying Twin Peaks, but in the course of the game both York and the plot clearly go off in a different direction than that show.

Considering how empty April is as far as big releases go, it's not like they'll have too much stuff to cover to do it next week or the week after.

I always hate their "nothing's coming out" discussions, there's never a time where nothing is coming out anymore, unless you limit yourself to only the AAA releases. There's pretty much at least one game coming out every day on Steam alone.

Well then. I thought Monster Hunter was an older game. That goes to show how much I know about Monster Hunter.

Either way, I don't understand why people complain about it.

I don't think MH is nearly as hard as they selling it to be. This is my first version, I'm playing on 3DS so it's all solo. I jumped right in and Im messing stuff up easily. I feel like though Final Fantasy XI set me up to be good at Mh though.. if that makes any sense.

Lots of publications have just done spoilercasts/videos (Sessler even just recorded one with Jeff), I would like to see GB wait a little bit and then try to get someone high up from Irrational (maybe even Ken himself?) to join them.

One thing I dislike when outlets try to do post-mortems with senior devs, is that the interviewer/presenter attempts to sound smart by asking really high level or conceptual questions then lose their train of thought, which causes the developer to just ramble about influences and personal experiences etc without actually offering much insight. I just wanna hear Vinny ask Ken some straight questions as a fan and not try to tart it up as something else.

That's the exact impression I get whenever I hear about Monster Hunter - solo/small-group raiding. I can definitely see the appeal in that.

Amen to that.
Metaphysical
storytelling has existed forever. I think Infinite deserves more than a discussion couched in recent pop culture examples.

I still maintain that the Brad/Ryan run is just as good. Brad being Brad at games is funny as fuck to watch.

I only watched the first couple BR run, is Brad in grumpy gamer/teenager being dragged to a museum mode throughout the entire playthrough?

I thought that was just Brad: Never paying attention to what's on screen at any given time only doing the minimal amount of work to go through a game, and failing miserably because of that?

Edit: Well, Brad in quicklook mode.

Right now I'm more interested into the pieces of world history incorporated into the story and how they fit together.

And I _really_ want to hear from:

*** Bioshock Infinite MAJOR spoiler be warned ***

Parents. I want to hear how the new parents like Vinny, Gary Whitta, Will Smith, Dave Snider, etc, were affected by Booker's decision to sell Anna. I'm not a parent and I still found it heartbreaking. And in retrospect, when Elizabeth started crying when she realized you weren't taking her to Paris... you were selling her AGAIN. Once that sank in after finishing the game I felt like a lowlife.

Shit, I never thought about it like that. Jesus.

Without turning this into a Infinite spoiler thread, I really hope one of the DLC's explore
Booker's life just prior to selling his daughter. If they're brave, they could do it with very little, if any, combat (maybe have the combat be flashbacks to Wounded Knee).

quick question about how long is Bioshock Infinite? I'm in it for the story so I don't care about playing on normal.

I think people are averaging around 12-15 hours. Some have critical pathed it in as low as 6 hours while others are soaking in absolutely everything and are at 20+ hours.

About 12 hours. Might take longer if you backtrack for optional quests or scout for collectables (which you might end up doing as they provide a lot of backstory and there is no easy way to go back and look for them once you complete the game).

On Normal you can probably bust through it in about 8 hours or less.

Probably 10 if you take the time to do the side quests (which are mostly small fetch quests).

On Hard I finished it in about 12 hours. I just started a replay on Medium to go through and collect all of voxaphones and stuff I missed the first time.

thanks for the info everyone. If I can get all my homework done prior to this weekend I was thinking about picking up Bioshock. I was just curious if it was possible to get through it over a weekend.

I don't imagine their feelings would be much different than anyone else, it's not as if the game places you in a situation to make that decision where having had a child recently would shade your decision making process. In fact they do little to develop that aspect of the narrative, it is kind of just a terrible thing Booker has done for there to be a story.
