Kotaku: Next Xbox will require online connection to start games

Quite the overreaction, it's just like with netflix, you require internet service to consume. It's obvious that Microsoft will sell their service in a way where you simply won't want to play offline. I already feel bad for people buying PS4 over Durango knowing that Microsoft is playing this wildcard, it just justifies the service that much more if they are implementing such a policy. Can't wait
I don't need an active internet connection to watch a movie on disk, delivered by Netflix.

Can't believe I had to write that sentence.

I still don't believe this, but then again the latest Gears took out Locust in team deathmatch, so maybe there is some extra dementia going around.

^^ That Walkman post is hilarious. The part about him feeling bad for people buying PS4 over Durango, just a masterpiece of comically retarded reasoning.

and people are defending this? what

Always are on the internet. Someone to defend everything. It's a hard rule that never bends.

I'm very impressed by the MS disinformation strategy so far.

They are leaking so much terribly negative information that when they finally do reveal the NeXtbox with "problematic" features that are relatively benign, you will all dance with joy that it wasn't "as bad as it could've been."

Brilliantly played, Redmond. Brillianty played indeed.

Once again, it's not about my internet. It's about theirs.

I know Live has been pretty stable for the most part, although that could change at any time, but remember that 2-3 week outage/connection issues a ton of people had during christmas break a few years back?

Now imagine something like that where the people affected not only can't play online or download anything...but can't play their xbox at all.

How is that even possible. No temporary ISP internet outtages? No router glitches? Moved into a new place and the internet provider won't be out to set up until the end of the week?

Maybe it's just where I am, but I've experienced all of the above and it's absolutely unacceptable that they would even think such a policy is acceptable for any reason. I know we agree on that point, but I'm surprised you haven't had to go without internet for an extended period a single time in 7 years.

Anecdotes are really the worst way to justify this. Every one's experience with their internet is vastly different.

This is the most worrying article yet because it's the first time we've got some proper developer sourcing for always online. It's finally time to start worrying. 2 developers at that, but it's still far too up in the air and mysterious considering some devs haven't been informed and others have, which is hard to rationalize. Not only that but them only being informed 2 weeks ago when this rumour has been buzzing forever is even more strange.

I don't know what to believe anymore.

They are going to fail if this is true. I really hope they aren't this stupid, but these companies tend to surprise us these days.

No they won't. They'll sell millions in their domestic market. Even though 22 million is over 1/3rd of the entire userbase, it's still a large number in absolute terms. Plus, UK much like NA loves Xbox so it'll do well over there as well.

If it's only about having it connected and nothing do with subscribing to XBL gold, then it shouldn't be a problem because then that 22million increases substantially.

Your username is ironic considering who made it.

If true the console could bomb nearly as bad as the Wii U

Baby Jimmy says "Awesome mom you got me an xbox 720 for christmas i am going to play it right now"

5 minutes later "mommy it says we need an internet connection or i can't play"

Mommy says "But jimmy we don't have one of those"

Alternative ending "Jimmy you know how terrible our internet connection is"

The number of times I have been without internet using my 360 = 0.

However, IF this ends up being true this is utter bullshit. You are telling me if I was playing Bioshock, and my connection dropped it's going to suspend my game and make me troubleshoot my network connection? In a single player game? Fuck that noise.

This will guarantee I do not purchase a Durango until they are dirt cheap and only to catch upon Halo.

Number of times my internet has been out this gen = once or twice

Number of times I have not been able to play a single player game because of "always online" connectivity = nonzero

Do you understand the real problem?

Sure, I agree. And it doesn't really make sense.

My internet connection itself is rarely ever down, but my XBox and PS3 seem to lose connectivity to various servers on a pretty routine basis. I've never figured out why game consoles have such sporadic network connections whereas my PC "just works" and plays games/video effortlessly while transferring what I'm assuming are similar amounts of data across the network.

It seems like this is just another small obstacle for pirates to get past while the honest customers have to put up with another annoyance every time they use the product.

They're probably betting big on the Halo and Gears fanbases to flock to their console despite their anti-consumer approaches. And also projecting that the American market will flock to it for its "set-top-box" features.

It seems like this is just another small obstacle for pirates to get past while the honest customers have to put up with another annoyance every time they use the product.

Doubt even pirates will want to waste money on the machine at that point.

People love to complain.

This is so transparent to the end-user that I just don't care. I'd wager than 95% of the Xbox population logs into Live at the start of their session. This will force the other 5% to connect.

As far as concerns regarding a 3-minute timer, again -- end-users will never notice. The SimCity fiasco was due to EA servers crapping out. XBox Live has gone down for more than a few minutes only a few times in the last 10+ years. If MS ended up having bandwidth issues, dropping folks regularly and ruining their experience, then they would change the timers. Pretty straightforward here -- ensure a transparent protection that does not hurt the user experience for 99% of your customers.

This won't impact my play experience at all.

I kind of agree with this, my internet is VERY stable, we have an outage or dropped session maybe once a year or so. I'm concerned about MS's end though, it has to be iron-clad.

Somehow he wasn't down during Live down time, like during the holidays either!

>.> I want what he's having!

If this is true, Sony seems to be making the least unforced errors out of anyone thus far. I can't believe Microsoft would shut themselves off to just about everyone in rural America that has spotty internet connections, though. I'm hoping this is just people operating off of old or bad information.

Will be interesting to see if his tune changes if it turns out the always online stuff is real.

You're part of the problem. I wouldn't stake such pride in a company that is obviously the most anti-consumer of the three.

Like I said earlier, they need the support from the publishers to pull this off. It's rather they have everyone on board with lots of support or the rumour is false.

2/3 of the people complaining will buy it anyways lol.

To make me go over this bullshit they'd need some HUGE exclusive i'm interested in, and nothing on the 360 came close to that (a probably not even on ps3).
3rd party exclusives are done and their first party library is pretty weak at the moment, so personally i don't feel that tempted.

No, the real scenario will be countless soccer moms buying it for Christmas and finding out the system is literally worthless because they don't have Internet or a good connection.

I almost want it to happen for the meltdowns.

You're right, and with Microsoft experimenting with the subsidized model this gen, we can actually expect Durango to be released at $149 with 2 year XBL contract. PS4 is DOA in the US.

It will not be if MS actually announces a gaming dictatorship for xbox

If that is true, xbox 720 could be the first cosnole i will never buy

Jesus, they can't be that stupid could they?

They will do it, and people will still buy it, like all the other people that have thrown money at Microsoft for stupid products and services ($100 wifi adapter, expensive xbox hard drives, XBL, etc.)

I suspect that they have the balls to announce this and I think people will still buy Durango even with this feature lol. Just like the people that bought Sim City.

Will be an interesting reveal, looking forward to it.

Perhaps that is why EA was a no-show at the PS4 reveal. EA and MS seem like a match made in heaven and with a combo of Halo/Madden the Durango will likely crush the PS4 in the US no matter how broken the tech is (not to mention that keeping your friends list is already a strong argument to stay loyal to your current brand for many).

Broken Simcity is the most successful Simcity ever. Why should it not work for Durango?

Because unlike SimCity, Microsoft has to sell at minimum 10-20 million of these things for the platform to be viable in the long term. The first 3-4 million is basically guaranteed. Past that?

Brilliantly played, Redmond. Brillianty played indeed.

Been wondering about this possibly being a marketing strategy as well but I think the line is blurred. I think part of these rumors are true possibly this one as well.

I wonder if Microsoft has been delaying announcements after seeing what Sony had and the reaction to SimCity and the always online Durango rumors, so that they could make some last minute changes.

Even if they changed this policy, it sort of shows you what kind of company this is for having always online on the table. At least you can say they're ballsy and is not afraid of complete failure.

3rd console curse etc.

Are you fucking kidding? The reality is a world where allegedly about 50% of all console gamers don't have their consoles even hooked up to any internet at all. How about thinking even a millisecond about anyone other than yourself?

MS makes more money by taking that existing non-Internet 50% and dividing them up into those who will connect to play and those who will not (or cannot).

Connected people buy digital goods and services. They buy more content. Most importantly, everyone needs to pay given the always-on security. And that removes the temptation a lot of gamers have to pirate, which is an increasing concern as a generation is brought-up looking for loopholes to avoid paying for digital content. My wife and I make over $250K a year, and even I am tempted if the loophole is wide enough (such as R1 carts for NDS).

Cannot connect? At least the PS4 and PC are there.

I think piracy is too easy to justify these days. "Everyone else is doing it, so I'm not a bad person if I do too." Kudos to MS for putting their foot down, with a solution that will not impact me at all. My internet has gone down for 3+ minutes a handful of times in the past few years. I just don't care.

Said it before and I'll say it again, if this is true it is buggered in the UK. With TalkTalk and BT as the big two games will be disconnecting 24/7.

I really want this to be true, mainly because I want to see how people would react to it. I get the feeling that while the majority of GAF would be up in arms about it, most mainstream consumers wouldn't give two shits and would still buy "the new Xbox."

"Internet down ? No gaming for you sonny !!!!!"

This is the new MS ad for xbox 720 :)

And Sony ad

"PS4, where you can actually own AND play games"

I'm glad that we're not all overreacting as usual here... Because that would embarrassing

At this point however, this doesn't change anything for me. Putting aside the fact that the damn thing hasn't even been announced yet and these are all baseless rumours from super secret sources that apparently know everything about the console and MS's plan for next gen, even if this were true it wouldn't effect me at all. I haven't played my Xbox offline in probably 3 years.
