Kotaku: Next Xbox will require online connection to start games

If the next generation consoles require always online, or don't have BC then I won't buy them.

Just my 2 pennies worth, but I bet pounds to pennies that I'm not the only one. If they are looking at Apple and android markets as sustainable models then they are epicly stupid...

I hope they totally had this big always-online system planned, then saw the huge negative publicity plus what happened with Sim City and scrap it at the last moment, never fully letting on that they were planning to do it. I would totally be fine with that.

This rumor has gained this much traction because EDGE has reported this and they have been 100% correct with their PS4 info and as well, Adam Orth indirectly confirmed it.

Agreed. After Edge reported it, I knew this rumor had some real legitimacy behind it. I still can't believe Microsoft may go through with this.

I'm three weeks from 42, but I'm in the exact same place you are. And I still want to know what happens to theses games in twenty years under such a system.

Im only 25, and I think about the future playability on games quite a bit. Its one of the reasons I will only buy retail releases physically. I want the protection that I can still use it in 20 years, even if I have to track down or fix the console itself.

I fear many do not care enough or even think about the future that way. It would be terrible having an entire consoles output unavailable 10 years after its replaced.

Digital can be done right but so far it isn't on consoles. When done right it can be nice and convenient. For retail games if you want to collect them eventually it piles up too much and you don't know where to put them.

Microsoft is not exactly known for changing their plans at the last minute, even when there are signs they should consider doing so.

Unfortunately I think this always online decision is not likely to cause them great harm. The vast majority of gaming customers have shown time and time again they will put up with a whole lot of shitty treatment. If the RROD fiasco didn't harm them this gen, I see no reason to think always online is going to hurt them next gen.
