Kotaku: Next Xbox will require online connection to start games

Wii U only for me next-gen then.

Surely this has to mean Microsoft has some sort of exclusive deal with publishers who want to stop used game sales.

Would Microsoft really be that stupid?

Sony really blew their load way too early. While their hype is dying and turning negative, MS is in waiting soaking up the speculation and buzz!

I still have the same full hype for PS4, did not go down any bit

In fact it is increasing as we go, for example now Diablo 3 is confirmed with offline mode !!!

Which means i can finally buy the game

What about the RRoD? The console flat out was defective which was widely reported on the first few years of it's existence. If people don't give a shit about a console that was nearly certain to die, I just don't see them caring about having to have an internet connection.

Who said they didn't give a shit? I can't support it either, but there should be a statistical analysis showing a decline, or maybe even a smaller increase, of sales during that period.

When Microsoft announce this console do you think they will spill the beans on this 'feature' and what kind of twist or incentive will they use? Really curious as to see what happens.

Quite the overreaction, it's just like with netflix, you require internet service to consume. It's obvious that Microsoft will sell their service in a way where you simply won't want to play offline. I already feel bad for people buying PS4 over Durango knowing that Microsoft is playing this wildcard, it just justifies the service that much more if they are implementing such a policy. Can't wait

This is the biggest bunch of apologist bullshit I have read in my life.

Will be an interesting reveal, looking forward to it.

Perhaps that is why EA was a no-show at the PS4 reveal. EA and MS seem like a match made in heaven and with a combo of Halo/Madden the Durango will likely crush the PS4 in the US no matter how broken the tech is (not to mention that keeping your friends list is already a strong argument to stay loyal to your current brand for many).

Broken Simcity is the most successful Simcity ever. Why should it not work for Durango?

In all honestly, I doubt any consumers will care. People raged about the RRoD yet they still bought the console in droves, even re-buying it several times (I myself went through a total of 4). The same was said about having to pay for XBL on top of your ISP, yet people still do it without hesitation. Then MS raised the price of XBL, yet the negative was minimal.

Reminds me of the MW2 petition:

Prior to the Wii U launch the thought of not buying a Nintendo console day one was unfathomable to me. If the rumors are true, I'll have a similar reaction to the next Xbox.

Sorry folks, but bashin aegies because he deducts an assumption from an information he got (which is probably not a false information) is pretty low. Don't lose your manners here.

There's my man. Aegeis is just like the rest, i.e. he goes with what he has. I am sure Marxis guys told him that the offline update couldn't be done. He was lied to so it's not really his fault.

In the same way, perhaps Kotaku authors were misled. Like I said, MS won't do this. And guess what? Even if they do, people will buy it. If Diablo 3 and Simcity aren't proof enough, I don't what'll convince you guys.

Why leave this out of OP?

From the Kotaku article.
I think Wario was trying to encourage people to actually read the article, but that wasn't going to happen anyways.

I quoted a bunch of stuff on the first page too; a lot of the article suggests reasoning why this info could be potentially false or MS is feeding devs different info, which I can only think of as an anti-leak strategy. These are probably not indies were talking about either.

What in the world...

You're right, and with Microsoft experimenting with the subsidized model this gen, we can actually expect Durango to be released at $149 with 2 year XBL contract. PS4 is DOA in the US.

Dream a little dream for me.

Such horseshit in this post.

Nah, it can't be true, they can't be this stupid, imo.

If it were true, it would be the easiest deal breaker for me, no way i'm buying an always-online console, lol.

They are going to fail if this is true. I really hope they aren't this stupid, but these companies tend to surprise us these days.

Personally, I find it hard to care. I can count the number of times my connection has gone down in the past decade on one hand. But knowing how many Americans have shitty connections I can only hope for MS sake that they've thought this one through.

No it's not like Netflix. It's like if you bought a blu-ray player and couldn't play the Blu-Rays you bought without being online.

Add that to far shakier rumors of the next Xbox working as a cable box or DVR or some other TV-viewing enabler--something not a single source of mine could confirm--and you might wonder: if my cable box always has to be connected, why not my next Xbox?
My brain just broke.

aegies has said nothing factual, Kotaku has a source. Hes just 'decided' based on his fanboyism.
As if Sony aren't also making an aggressive push with PS4; hes a very odd man in how he acts/talks to people and not too bright.

There is no way this is real. They cannot be that stupid.

The absolute only way all of this is real is that they have something just so mind blowing, people will jump on board despite the shitty DRM. Like.. EA exclusive to Nextbox. And comparable hardware to PS4, for only $200. I mean, it would take something monumental for them to get away with something so terribly stupid. Especially since it will be announced while we gamers are still mourning SimCity.

I hope this is true, as it will mean I will never be tempted to get the next Xbox. Well unless it could replace a cable box and be cheaper I guess, but I sure as fuck wouldn't game on it.

Dude, you sound totally biased!

I'm being entirely facetious. This constant negative bad buzz is harmful to MS, and there's no way around it. Unless unloading the bad news early can mitigate the harmful effects when they how the good aspects of the system in the reveal.

MS can fuck right off.

I've got a huge backlog of games spanning from the NES forward. I'll gladly stop buying consoles and watch as the industry burns again.

Are you serious? I do not see negative news in the media

its a joke

I still cant believe that MS would be doing this. I am going to stick with it just being a misunderstanding right now. But the constant revival of this rumor is not a good sign.

Wow ..... Talk about deluded.

We're all really going to hate when you can't just buy the thing for $400 and it's $199 down, plus $8/month for 3 years like a goddamn cellphone.

it's Kotaku so unlike the other rumours about this from a source that had a good track record, I'll not add this in as weighty evidence that it is true one way or the other.

but as with the other rumours, if it's true, I'm glad Microsoft is making it easier to ignore their console. Save me money and shit.

if there's a company willing to do this, it's MS. maybe not the "3 minutes, game stops" bit, but the "must be online to start games and apps", absolutely, it's the same company whom hides YouTube behind a paywall.

No way. Sony has already started pushing the PS4 hard for how far away the launch is. If this is any indication on their marketing push for the PS4 now, I can't imagine how strong it'll be closer to launch. Sony will do just fine in the US with the ps4.

No, they'll keep it bottled up as tight as they can, but it will spill out during E3 itself. It's one of the few things the gaming press is good for, not because they are talented, but because of their sheer numbers during the three days (weeks, even) that is E3 they are just able to overwhelm marketing speak and get someone to say something they shouldn't.

The number of times I have been without internet using my 360 = 0.
How is that even possible. No temporary ISP internet outtages? No router glitches? Moved into a new place and the internet provider won't be out to set up until the end of the week?

Maybe it's just where I am, but I've experienced all of the above and it's absolutely unacceptable that they would even think such a policy is acceptable for any reason. I know we agree on that point, but I'm surprised you haven't had to go without internet for an extended period a single time in 7 years.

Yeah, online-only activation would not surprise me overmuch from xbox.
