Kotaku: Next Xbox will require online connection to start games

I remember that thread we had not long ago where it gave out xbox live numbers and it left a 20-30 MILLION gap between total 360s sold and number of live accounts there were.

That's a lot of people to leave out in the dust with a forced connection feature.

And that´s when you assume that all the people that have a Live account are actually willing/able to deal with always online, which i seriously doubt.

Microsoft would be insane to pull this off.

"If there isn't a connection, no games or apps can be started," the source continued. "If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time--currently three minutes, if I remember correctly--the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started."

NOPE

No way.

Will not even consider.

My internet is kind of crap and goes down for 5 minutes or more at random times.

I think that proves that Kotaku rumour is a bust. In Aegeis we trust. MS won't enforce something like this.

And in reality, most have internet (remember that 22 million figure for XBL gold membership base?).

This will curb piracy.

Wait what, so your believing a geise over two other sources and so what because 22m have gold, you do know that is a small percentage of the 360s sold right.

Where there's smoke there's fire. It's going to be really fucking weird if the PS4 ends up having better online features and gameplay because they actually learned from their mistakes with the PS3.

In all honestly, I doubt any consumers will care. People raged about the RRoD yet they still bought the console in droves, even re-buying it several times (I myself went through a total of 4). The same was said about having to pay for XBL on top of your ISP, yet people still do it without hesitation. Then MS raised the price of XBL, yet the negative was minimal.

Reminds me of the MW2 petition:

You're vastly underestimating how many people in the US have shit internet.

I don't know if there's a system feature set or games lineup sweet enough to make me want the console in light of this.... backlog +3ds for a year or two, it is.

-100% connected to internet rate, eat your heart out 3DS!
-0% piracy, woohoo!

I'm sure there are plenty more that I'm not thinking of, but I have a hard time getting into the corporation mindset.

Don't underestimate piracy. I'm sure something like this is gonna encourage pirates even more.

I can't believe anyone, including Microsoft can be that stupid. It's nigh impossible.
If anything, i'd be more inclined to believe this is deliberately false info to keep expectations extremely low for when they finally reveal.

People love to complain.

This is so transparent to the end-user that I just don't care. I'd wager than 95% of the Xbox population logs into Live at the start of their session. This will force the other 5% to connect.

As far as concerns regarding a 3-minute timer, again -- end-users will never notice. The SimCity fiasco was due to EA servers crapping out. XBox Live has gone down for more than a
few minutes only a few times in the last 10+ years.

This won't impact my play experience at all.

Are you fucking kidding? The reality is a world where allegedly about 50% of all console gamers don't have their consoles even hooked up to any internet at all. How about thinking even a millisecond about anyone other than yourself?

Yes gurl you're right. One image shows a temporary lapse in judgement. He is fallible like the rest of us but he is more in the know that those who don't work in the industry.

Well it's better to have 10 people who pay $40 each for the game compared to being paid for 5 copies despite the total number of players being 20.

Players don't own the copy of the game, they simply hold the license to use under their terms. So those people need to deal with it.

How is Arthur Gies, who works for Polygon, any more "working in the industry" than Stephen Totilo, who works for Kotaku? I'm not understanding how his word is a "more reliable source."

Why leave this out of OP?

That said, a caution and a caveat: other sources familiar with the codenamed Durango console have told us that they are still unaware of any Microsoft plans regarding an online requirement. No one has been able to say it's not true and some have speculated that this is required at the operating system level and therefore isn't something Microsoft has to tell all developers or retail partners. Microsoft also has the ability to change this type of requirement seemingly at a moment's notice through changes in firmware or networking infrastructure.

From the Kotaku article. It's starting to get really annoying how fast people fully accept any rumor that has multiple sources as fact It feels like the same exact people in Durango and PS4 rumor threads constantly talk about how they aren't getting the console because of one rumored feature.

do people really need to dig through his twitter and neogaf history to prove you wrong?

Sorry folks, but bashin aegies because he deducts an assumption from an information he got (which is probably not a false information) is pretty low. Don't lose your manners here.

Perhaps a dev-kit only thing + devs being told different things to snuff out leaks? Sounds like a good way to keep people from leaking stuff from your actual runtime if you ask me.
I could see this being this case even if that would be a bit paranoid of them. After the controller stripe thing though I'd be more willing to believe it.

The thing is, why would MS risk such intense backlash and support issues for something like this? What is the impetus behind it? What features are they wanting to guarantee will always be there for the user? No way they would be doing this just for DRM. Not even MS would risk their billion dollar brand on that. IF this is true, there HAS to be some feature set that MS is banking heavily on, and that feature set requires there to always be a connection.

If you can rely on every player being online even in singleplayer it allows for some new game concepts, but I'm sure it has more to do with pushing ads and services, cloud processing for kinect etc. DRM is probably pretty far down the list. There are better solutions for console DRM

"People 'can't pirate' if you have your games always online!"-M$

There is the marketing standpoint. Ironically it pushes more people to pirate and has only proven to kill any interest people had in games that use it like SimCity and Diablo III.

This will encourage pirates in full force. All of them will shift to breaking the always online required connection. This will be the hugest pirated console in history. Looking at you PSP.

So if my Internet connection shits itself like it does once a month..... Can t even play Xbox until its back online. Fuck that's retarded.
This is my issue too. This alienates SO many consumers. I can't believe they'd do this over serving to the lowest common denominator or should I say markets. This really can be the difference between winning and losing the next-gen race, and if MS goes through with this it will be a mistake worse than anything related to W8 or Surface recently.

When I hear this sort of thing my mind immediately jumps to Diablo 3 and SimCity. Is it possible that they might be using some kind of different strategy on the back end which will prevent the system from getting totally crippled during instances of very high traffic like we say with those examples? Because if not this just seems like recklessness to the point of insanity.

Quite the overreaction, it's just like with netflix, you require internet service to consume. It's obvious that Microsoft will sell their service in a way where you simply won't want to play offline. I already feel bad for people buying PS4 over Durango knowing that Microsoft is playing this wildcard, it just justifies the service that much more if they are implementing such a policy. Can't wait

Nice try, Microsoft junior marketing associate.

Sounds like bullshit to me, my connections drops a fair bit on my wifi for this to be a huge turnoff for me.

Feels like someone is going out of their way to increase Sony mindshare and dog the shit out of MS before there's even an announcement. Can MS really be THAT stupid??

If it turns out to be true, I'll consider switching seriously.

Dedicated servers for a $60 game is not the same as overbearing always online connection
for a $300+ console.

What about the RRoD? The console flat out was defective which was widely reported on the first few years of it's existence. If people don't give a shit about a console that was nearly certain to die, I just don't see them caring about having to have an internet connection.

Sony really blew their load way too early. While their hype is dying and turning negative, MS is in waiting soaking up the speculation and buzz!
