Kotaku: Next Xbox will require online connection to start games

Obviously not the most important issue regarding this, but what happens 20+ years from now when Microsoft pulls the plug on the servers? If this is true, won't every game released for the system be unplayable in the future?

I don't buy it.

MS would have to be really fucking stupid to do this. Don't they even look at their own stats? There's like 40 million XBL accounts for 70M+ consoles.

Microsoft? Make stupid business decisions?

Naw, never.

Here's a way this could work:

Buy console for 250, pay a monthly service fee, always online, etc.

What if there was a 3g chip ingrained in every console so when you're internet goes down you can still play "offline"

Still think it fucking sucks, and I won't be buying it if any of this is true, lol

This goes hand in hand with their strategy for their XBOX gTLD (which should launch by September this year). So if this is real I'm not surprised. I'm not really bothered by it either as long as the user policies are reasonable and you don't risk losing any data in happening of a thunder storm or other event. But I'll wait for the reveal to see what this is all about.

It sure would be nice if they actually started talking so we could get some facts and not just a bunch of rumors. April 18th (date of Microsoft's Fiscal Year 2013 Third Quarter Earnings Conference Call) can't come soon enough.

I have tremendous faith that this will not cause frustration based on my totally frustration-free experience with network issues on Windows over the years.

Living in a country where the internet is shit, this isn't the console for me

you mean America?

I live in a rural area near the interstate between two populated cities, and only have a monopoly choice of one ISP, AT&T DSL. Some days it's good, some days it's awful. Regardless, I've always been able to turn on a 360 on and play stuff like forza, xbla games, left 4 dead, etc. I've gone spans of a year without Live and found fun playing with friends locally or going after achievements.

I simply won't spend money on a console that won't work in my situation.

companies now don't give a shit about that. While older stuff like the NES and Atari consoles are still beasting along, the original xbox already had it's online service shut off and has a built in HDD and dvd drive that will eventually die. BC isn't even a must bullet point feature anymore because they'd rather resell you the same games on the next console.

Another required online rumor?

Btw,all these "required online" or any negative rumor actually sounds like non of any PC in Microsoft HQ have internet connection because it also sounds like MS don't know customers reaction when these rumor news released or they never know Simcity 2013 released and when happened few days after the release.

Forgive me if I don't believe Kotaku's "two sources". Probably SuperDAE posing as two people.

Until this is confirmed, I don't believe it.

Every rumor we've had for over a year so far points to it and now two more sources confirm it. If you don't believe it now, I don't think anything will convince you.

PS4 it is for me.

I have awesome broadband, but on occasion it can cut out for a little. Disconnecting from a game in 3 fucking minutes is a joke. Fuck this shit.

PS4 isn't plagued with this shit? Or is that still not official?

I was thinking of buying one of the two next-gen consoles and wasn't sure which one, but it seems like the choice is getting more obvious now. Unless PS4 is really fucking expensive.

Sony has already confirmed that online is not required.

It's not DRM, there are server-side computations that are needed so the user can fully experience the interconnected Xbox experience.

Seriously? You can't play any of your purchased XBLA games offline?

I think you're supposed to be able to if it's the original console that the game was downloaded to. So for example, if I have Xbox 1 and Xbox 2, and download a game to Xbox 1.

Xbox 1 can play game both online and offline
Xbox 2 can play game only if the live account that purchased it is logged in and connected to Xbox Live.

Bullshit, how are the conoles supposed to demo games at trade shows if they don't have access to an internet connection? 3G on consoles? What about offline game tournaments? No way MS would abandon that scene especially after how big Halo is.

If true, this would be very disappointing. I obviously don't know their business dealings but one would have to assume this could cut off a portion of their market. Not everyone has Internet but for Microsoft, this segment may be very well be expendable depending on how their pay structure/services are geared towards their desired market and their consumption potential.

This would pretty much mean that I have no use for a NeXtbox as I do ALL of my online gaming on my PC and my consoles are for single-player games only.

I don't even have a Live or PSN account.

Apparently there are some people who are not informed about Arthur Gies:

Whoa. I admit I had no idea about any of this. Is this from the original thread discussing the party?

Plenty of people in that sdk thread are looking really stupid right now.

Why, because some of us much rather have an open mind instead of jumping to conclusions?

It's not like this is confirmed yet, and it turns out true, everyone else will be talking about how stupid this is.

You can play offline if you do a license transfer.

That said, a caution and a caveat: other sources familiar with the codenamed Durango console have told us that they are still unaware of any Microsoft plans regarding an online requirement. No one has been able to say it's not true and some have speculated that this is required at the operating system level and therefore isn't something Microsoft has to tell all developers or retail partners. Microsoft also has the ability to change this type of requirement seemingly at a moment's notice through changes in firmware or networking infrastructure.

Lol

In January, the hacker SuperDaE began sharing official development documents for the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox. Many of the dozens of pages of the Xbox/Durango documentation were full of programming code but the parts in plain English--the parts that, honestly, we could understand--said nothing about an online requirement

Lol

So is there a chance that it's required for the beta console but not the final one? I can't believe MS would be this dumb.
