Zelda game set in Link to the Past world coming to the 3DS, holiday 2013

This is what Zelda is supposed to be about. If you don't want exploration then why do you like the series?

I like exploration that can benefit the player with bonus items or items that can buff the player up in some regard. ALTTP has dungeons or areas inaccessible until you find the item which is hidden somewhere in the overworld.

Majoras Mask can be beaten without collecting all the masks, Ocarina of Time can be beaten without any of the masks, extra milk containers, extra heart pieces, or the big Goron sword for example.

There's tons of examples in 3D Zelda games where extra items help the player instead of being a tool for progression. Having to scour every inch of an area hoping to get an item that lets you progress is the most unfun thing to me.

Why do I like the series? Sense of scale, the feeling of awe when you see a big or grand area, fun dungeon design, eerie or overpowering moments, evenly matched boss battles, the mask element in Majoras Mask, these are some elements I've enjoyed in the Zelda series.

Really, in 3D, this:

Is almost something else entirely. Then again I have a terrible fear of heights.

I hope they do a better job showing how far down the tower goes in the final game. It looks like it's just floating in the sky in the trailer. I know it's nitpicky, but it should be so hard to at least fade the tower into the distance.

I wonder if all of the dungeons are going to be skyscrapers or if that's a gimmick unique to this one. Looks like the Tower of Hera.

Yeah. I don't know if I could handle that though. Really, what I saw in the video was enough for me, 3D wise, I thought it still established a sense of height in general. It's still in development though so we'll see. Plus the cloud layer seemed too dense to see further down I think.

Don't worry, you're not the only person that seems to be under the assumption that this is the only 3DS Zelda that Nintendo is going to release.
It doesn't seem likely that they'll put the effort into making anything other than a top-down Zelda as an original game for the system.

I know I said I was going

To me, there's still a sense of wonder, even when I played the game over a decade after it came out, of the first time you go in Hyrule Field in Ocarina, or sail in Wind Waker. It's not just that I prefer the mechanics of the 3D games (which I most certainly do, especially for combat) it's just the sense that the games feel more immersive (much as I hate that term) and involving. I have very few memories of the 2D Zeldas that can rival any of my memories of the 3D ones. And my first Zelda was Link's Awakening and I played Link To The Past after Ocarina. I've played Minish Cap, I've played *spit* Phantom Hourglass. None of them feel as grand and exciting as the 3D games do at their best.

I know this is arguing opinions, somebody can easily say "yeah well I like the 2D games more there's less bullshit and things are more condensed" and that's fine, but I just feel absolutely nothing playing those games. They feel sterile and simple, like a relic from the past. 2D Mario is still fun. 2D Zelda, to me, I just don't get it. I don't see how it's, from a game design perspective, superior in anyway, other than cheaper. I thought the 3DS was going to be the Nintendo handheld that finally offered experiences on par with their consoles. For awhile it did. Now it seems to be just going back to the kind of games we got on DS.

Bye

Having the camera behind your character isn't anymore immersive though. The only way to truly be immersed as if you were actually in the world would be a first person perspective. I'm playing through GTA4 with a First Person mod and I've never felt more like I was a part of a GTA city quite like it feels playing it in first person, being eye level with the NPC's around you.

So unless you're looking through the eyes of Link, it's just a simple camera angle difference to look at either the top of your character's head, or the back of it and not be anymore immersed either way.

Not at the same price I'd pay for a 3D game.

I respect the right of 2D games to exist, but personally they're just not acceptable to me as marquee titles anymore. If I'm in the minority, so be it.

Personally, 2D games are worth more to me than 3D games.

It's not about how large the budget is, it's about how much enjoyment I get out of it.

Inherently subjective statement doesn't need additional baggage for babies.

Oh wow, did that put down feel good Tyler?

Of course such 'additional baggage' isn't needed, but maybe some people here are so wrapped up in their own myopia they don't actually realise other views exist.

Did you need to take time out of your day here? Why so serious?

Perhaps its because even the forum's owner is a bickering, sniping arsehole. Maybe the forum is such a tiresome shit hole to read because YOU are a petulant baby yourself. It's infectious, trickling down from the very top.

Enjoy your gaming industry 'fame' while it lasts, maybe you should sell up before you drive everyone away.

Been here since before 2004 under a couple of names: I'm out, GAF is no fun to actually take part in, too many cunts.

Bye to everyone actually nice, people I met in London recently etc. Do stay in touch. Everyone else: have fun having pointless back and forths with reaction fishing idiots and caring more about arguments than games.

I dunno, I'm just saying that this probably isn't it as far as new Zelda games on 3DS. With this one, it's clearly a nod back to LTTP, but the next one could be its own thing. Kind of like the Wind Waker HD remake coming before the "big one" for Wii U.

So they're basically doing the NSMB thing with Zelda. Wouldn't have been my first choice (not a fan of recycling the same old themes and aesthetics ad nauseum), but I'll take this 1000 times over PH and ST. I'm pretty ambivalent about 2.5D, but I guess that's just par for the course these days.

Just saw the trailer on my 3DS and I think it looks great. Super excited about the puzzle possibilities with Link as a drawing/mural.

And uhh WTF at that account suicide.

Is it just me or does this Links face look like the same model from the Young Link N64 models?
PsGiSqr.png

Maybe more polygons, but it looks basically the same, no?

FAKE EDIT: I believe its actually the same face model from Ocarina of Time 3D
CVD24M8.jpg

This basically confirms at least Link's model isn't done yet. It looks like Link's models and animation are (one of) the last things they work on in a Zelda game. I remember Link's voice and some of his animations in the E3 Skyward Sword showing were exactly the same as in Twilight Princess.
I wouldn't get hung up over Link's model yet.

Come on radiohead. Don't go over this. Maybe just take a break from GAF or hang in the BritGAF thread. :(

Good lord the 3DS is on fire! This was an excellent Nintendo Direct even without this, but A Link to the Past sequel!?

Oh my yes. I love my XL.

I would be excited if this wasn't a Zelda game. Nintendo has pretty much destroyed anything good about their latest three installments by introducing the let's explain every single thing to the player mechanic. However if this game is close to some of the earlier entries in terms of challenge I will definitely be there day 1.

Bro, calm down

The graphics are. . . starting to grow on me. There is something charming about the round, Harvest Moon chibi style. Seeing the higher quality screenshots really makes the colors pop. It does look much better than the DS games.

:)

A new Link to the Past game. That's just insane to think about! Ha ha! I don't know if it's because I'm slap happy from not sleeping or what, but when I watch the trailer now, I just have a big smile on my face. Interesting enough, I just started a new game of ALttP last night.

DUDE! A NEW LINK TO THE PAST! :))))

Oh wow, this looks fantastic in 3D! Completely different opinion going off that. The amount of depth between floors is really what sets it apart visually.

I thought this looked very nice when I was watching the stream in a little window but then I saw it on my 3DS XL and wasn't as pleased. That map comparison is also very damning.

I liked the way wall-painting Link looks quite a bit though.

You'll be missed.

Ocarina in 3D looked incredible. Probably the best use of 3D I've seen. It just made the game look so much more alive. This may be good for certain puzzle designs but it's just not going to be able to compete with Ganondorf Tennis.

Ganondorf Tennis was born in a 2D zelda...

The wall painting and vertical mechanics paired with the top down view seem like they have the makings of some really obtuse puzzles.

I actually enjoyed Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, but I'm not going to lie that a return to a more Link's Awakening-style for the handhelds is something I'm excited about.

Speaking of which, a Link's Awakening sequel would've been even more amazing. :0

The bolded statement was actually the point I tried to make with the remark. Don,t agree with the rest of it tough.

Graphics are meh, but the game looks freaking great. Minish Cap is my favorite top-down zelda of all time, and this game reminds me of it a lot already. I'm going to buy a 3DS for this.

Also, dat account suicide. Oh wow.

After playing Fire Emblem and Shadow War, I'm glad they're going with a top-down perspective. I know a lot of people hate 3D, but these types of games use it the best.
