Polygon Rumor: Xbox 720 DRM, Achievements, Friendslist, and Share feature info

With both new consoles using Blu-ray drives, is pirating going to be such an issue that they have to go through all the overhead of online validations/servers/etc...?

I don't know anyone who has a Blu-ray burner, or would want to download 50GB games.
The PS3 has Blu-ray and I don't see much of a pirating problem there. Plus when there was an exploit, Sony was able to patch it and only a handful of people still have the old firmware, and can't go online with it.

I used to think the accusations towards Polygon were a bit unfair. All I can say is that the run up to the next generation has been really illuminating in that respect.

Dear Microsoft,
I no longer care about achievements. What now?

Anyone else feel like achievements aren't a big deal anymore?

You've gotten used to them and they are now a part of every game you would play. I think some people would notice their absence if they all of a sudden disappeared.

I think this is an interesting discussion topic. Do you think that achievements/trophies lend to some sort of a feeling of acomplishment or are they there just to prolong the life of a game for 100%ers?

I think , in their current state, the only problem I have with achievements is how they are presented. In WoW, when you level up you get a prominent sound and a firework effect that imo leads to a small feeling of acomplishment in game. I think MS should do the same (not go over the top with it) and break away from the real clean business-like achievement presentation.

How so?

Like, so I can torrent a file, throw it on a thumb drive and play it on my console without having to go through any console mods or formatting issues? Why would a publisher ever choose that option if it was made available? Who would that benefit exactly?

A lot of indie developers have essentially allowed the same thing by releasing their PC games with no DRM.

So I can just download the Witcher 2 onto a thumbstick and play it on my 360? News to me.

If you downloaded the game from GOG, you can copy and install it on any computer without any restrictions.

I'm still assuming the worst with MS and DRM but could you imagine, after all the "debate", if MS and Sony turned out to have the exact same policies (publishers decide)? The mental gymnastics required to rationalize the past few months would be brutal.

No one needs to rationalize speculation based on rumor. And the past few months of discussion on that front should be viewed as valuable market insight for all affiliated companies.

Got 10 positive online feedback! Achievement unlocked! Took part in an event and got into top 10 score on that day! Achievement unlocked.

Dear god I hope they don't incorporate these kinds of systems =S
I hate what the achievement system has made my friends =/

The drm stuff sounds fine. Less a rethink a more a continuation of the status quo I think, which is good!

Slight correction on their description of ps4 video recording though - it is constantly recording and keeps a buffer of the last x minutes to share when the user wants, it doesn't just start recording when the user hits a button as they seem to suggest. The Xbox system sounds very similar.

Sounds like they misunderstood the idea behind the share button. It's not really surprising that both are going for similar features, it will be interesting to see which pulls it off with the least amount of issues/problems.

pretty much sounds like the way PS3 already does it. hopefully people can calm down on that score.

Are people really getting upset about achievements? community and clan driven achievements really that bad a of a thing?

Why shouldn't you earn achievements across multiple titles? You can already unlock things early in mass effect 2(?) if you have a save game for one... an extension for that could be cool.

I'd rather see an extension of achievements unlocking powers/skills when you start a new game as they do in Mass Effect 1. That's the only time I've viewed unlocking achievements in a positive light. If they do that more, they could become a lot more interesting than they are now and encourage people to embrace new play-styles, etc.

I think that second one sounds pretty neat actually.

I believe Sony said a similar thing.

Yeah. When that reporter out and out asked the sony if PS4 would block used games, and the sony had to wave over a sony PR guy and confab for a minute before answering, I knew things were going to be very different.

I'm not upset, as I no longer care about achievements/trophies that much.

However, I'm generally not a fan of achievements that requires a significant amount of time investment (contribute 10,000 kills, be top 10% of weekly leader board.) or really stringent "event" occurrences (play game during double XP event!).

I have little free time as is. I don't want a game to start affect my scheduling.

(biggest current-gen offender is YDKJ. Where certain achievements requires you to play on certain US holidays.)

It's account level.

No way EA would give exclusives if it's going to get flack and could do the same in the PS4.

Polygon are a bunch of pro MS propaganda tools.

doesn't it? Although I think I'd add intrusive as well.

Did you find Mass Effect 2 and 3's save imports intrusive? Or Psycho Mantis reading your memory card? I don't see how *pop* you've beaten every Halo game on Legendary, +10*pop* is any worse than what we have now.

It's not like MS was going to get rid of the achievement system since it was a big selling point at the start of the generation, and Sony is keeping/expanding the trophy system.

Edit: and it's not like devs are going to go out of their way to create bizarre unique achievements for both consoles and PC. Cross-game achievements will probably hit all 3 platforms if it his one.

The next Xbox will allow publishers to decide if their games should require an internet connection to be played.

yep, i now believe this will be the case with both NextBox and PS4. it's their way to shift responsibility over to the publishers, so that if gamers react negatively MS and Sony can always point their finger at Activision or EA or whoever. it's rather brilliant actually, perfect solution for them.

if/when this happens, i will reward those publishers who don't require an always online connection by buying their games day 1 full price, and those who require an internet connection will get my money when they've significantly dropped the price. i can easily wait a year to play the newest Assassin's Creed or Mass Effect.

I found those broken. no mass effect 1 faces in 3 I really wanted to play my deformed, hideous shepard in 3 because it was a lot of fun playing an ugly person in an aaa game.

We'll see if your right. I think it's going to be more along the lines of what Bioware was trying to do with getting people to use mobile phones, facebook farmiville stuff, and other junk wrt to mass effect 3.

I have no problem changing up Achievements to be more like steam achievements.

TF2 and L4D2 got plenty of event spastic achievements and rewards. Its a neat little idea. I wonder how this will effect the gamerscore breakdown. Maybe they are dropping "points" and a total score or just changing it up.

To be fair, I don't think it's the console makers war to fight in the first place.

Following others like twitter is a good idea. More social network-esque is a good idea.

Communal achievements usually aren't. All the achievement stuff seems like it opens up more possibilities for impossible achievements. And developers have already proved their good at promoting all the wrong behavior for online matches and ruining those games.

Kinda happy we finally have rumours about the services though. Where they take XBL next will be the most exciting bit about Durango.

From polygon article:
http://www.polygon.com/2013/4/26/4268782/next-xbox-drm-achievements-live
Like the recently announced PlayStation 4, the still-unnamed next Xbox will include the ability to capture video highlights of gameplay and then share them through networks like Facebook and Ustream.

In February, during the official PlayStation 4 unveiling, Sony officials detailed the heightened importance of sharing game experiences. The ability to share a snapshot from a game or show off a gameplay video is so important that a "share" button is incorporated into that upcoming console's new controller.

Pressing the PS4's share button allows players to begin capturing their own gameplay in real time and then broadcast it to their friends using social networks.

Microsoft is also trying to come up with a system for video sharing though all of the details are still being locked down. According to our sources, currently the next Xbox will capture your gameplay as if it were a DVR, allowing you to go back and select highlights. That function can be turned on or off, or a player can set up the console to automatically capture a recording when certain in-game events occur, like a headshot or collecting a specific achievement. Auto capturing those "magic moments" will be a feature only available on next-gen games.

Those videos can then be uploaded directly from the console to social sites, like YouTube, for sharing.

Edit: Just saw the previous thread under a different title heading. Sorry!
