I'd probably agree with you on that, mostly because the next Xbox is less game-centric than the PS4 and the 360. But importantly, not at the expense of games themselves, which will be a very big problem for Sony.

We'll see. If rumors are right, the system isn't nearly as powerful as the PS4, making it quite possible that AAA games will suffer a great deal (barring a gameplay design genius or two working for MS). It's also quite possible that they will compromise on games to achieve this wider audience, by doing things like using limited investment dollars (yes, they are limited even though you can increase them) to pursue other interests. More RAM for the OS, more dollars for casual games, etc.

Dropping the camera would be a huge mistake. If it is not included in every box it won't get much support. Microsoft would be able to use Kinect to steamroll Sony among casuals.

I really don't care how Sony does with the casuals. If no camera means a lower price, then by all means Sony, drop the fucking bastard.

Mods, if this offends you, please tell me to delete this shit, the bird can't take another ban.

A few months ago, I spoke to someone familiar with the situation over at MS.

I kept pandering him for performance numbers and how well it translates into what we see on screen. I wanted to know if anything had changed from the leaked specs we had in the original PDF floating around.

A week after the PS4 press conference he cracked and admitted that beta kits were running hotter than they wanted. He claimed the teams is experiencing headaches trying to get all the pieces to fit together in a timely fashion. The last thing he told me was, "Performance, at this moment, is the least of our concerns."

I know this sounds like some sort of fanfic, but I am sure someone or the other can back me up on if they have the courage to do so.

Also, temper your expectations for Ryse. The animation system is supposedly janky. It's not a Kinnect title only btw, it has been converted into a full featured AAA game so that is something atleast.

This is not the full story.

I planned to post a similar message but was grilled, again :p

I've heard the same things. But it also concerns to a lesser extent the PS4, which is far from being as smooth/ready, especially regarding dev kits, as the efficient public relation push that was deployed since February leads enthusiast crowds to believe. I've been told than the two are even more late for a November launch than Nintendo and their Wii U, considering that Big N were themselves as i reported on several WUSTs in rush mode.

It's troubling, i hope they will launch fully fledged and major-issues-free systems come November.

Not surprising for a project of this size. If anyone think MS or Sony are all good times and roses, they clearly don't understand what it's like to be on a large project such as this. I'm sure at this point both MS and Sony are looking at what they want to do in terms of features, being realistic, and cutting anything that could threaten their launch. It's all just software, which is easy to update anyways. The consoles they release now will be a lot different than the same consoles with a year of updates.

As terrible as the quote makes this seem for MS, it's really just business as usual in this industry. I have never heard of any console manufacturer who has had an easy time with developing a console. It's always panic mode up until release.

Oh fuck I forgot about that...ugh...
Seriously - if MS are lacking games at launch...delay or pull a Nintendo and talk reaaalllyyy slowly and get EA to strip tease for you. Whatever happens - DO NOT - start promoting your exclusive TV content...

Yeah, I don't expect them to go with that on the 21st, however most of the rumblings about the Xbox Platform going forward have come from the TV & Non-gaming entertainment side (TV/Music/Etc)

I really don't care how Sony does with the casuals. If no camera means a lower price, then by all means Sony, drop the fucking bastard.

But think of all the service and game features you could have with the camera. I think it would be pretty cool to have it standard.

Quite unfortunate and this could have huge ramifications on Durango.

However I think the idea that they signed exclusives so late into the development of these games to compensate is kind-of nonsense. MS has always gone for securing 3rd party exclusives and I see this gen as being no different.

8gb gddr5 ramifications? :P

Casuals are gone. They play games on facebook and phones. They aren't coming to consoles. Nintendo caught them at the perfect time but, in my opinion, they are spoken for in the forseeable future.

This...isn't an unfair point. I think software can happen to anyone. Its happened to all the big three. Launches are a knife edge and we don't notice Last of Us getting delayed or Luigi, but we'd notice if they were the planned launch games.

Hardware? Less of an excuse. Weird how Sony could just throw more in there and have it all in line. Really have to question whats going wrong for MS.
I think Sony being an incubator for it's studios is paying dividends now. They have a sufficient catalog of faithful second-party studios to rely on, and even 3rd party studios that have had great experience with Sony due to developer relations. MS was more aggressive in acquiring IPs rather than creating them. MS needs to set up a developer workshop and form new generation of loyal, talented studios.

I think they'll be alright on the software side as long as they can still line up 2-3 good first party games for launch. People are used to waiting 5-7 months after launch for the really compelling software to drop.

The hardware thing is obviously worrisome, but I imagine they'll get it sorted out before launch this time. Plus, the rumor was relayed to thuway more than a month ago, and who knows when thuway's source received it? There's time.

But if Microsoft's last resort is to trim the clock speed a bit to lower heat, I don't think that's the end of the world. The systems will still be roughly comparable, I'm sure. Besides, the winner of this generation won't be the one with the graphical edge.

truth

and my post indicates that Sony isn't in a far better shape regarding the PS4 preparation, especially for dev kits. Little hint: there's more to it about the absence of the real unit at the Playstation 4 reveal than what was told. They are just better at covering these "hastily times" by anticipation building and hype generating though.

I wonder why thuway waited this long to drop that info?

Why did you ;)

I haven't heard that at all and one of my peeps would definitely know something like this.

6 months ? Not great if true. My gut feeling is this box will piss off fans by showing a clear move towards apps and interactive tv with the new Kinect and games a lesser tier. I was thinking the games shown most of them will be on other platforms anyway as I dont expect much from MS anymore although it would be great to be proved wrong

WiiU saved.

So it wasn't on him actually breaking the silence on that particular detail, point fingers at someone else. etc. You apparently also knew this but said nothing,

Because it's starting something that could possibly be a false alarm.

That's never stopped you with positive MS rumors though :P

They could definitely secure a new Mass Effect considering how bad sold on PS3.

If they are smart, they could definitely pitch proposals of exclusivity to some of the "important" games of current gen that sold way better on Xbox.

And EA can only blame themselves for that; minimal advertising, and releasing two parts of the series later on the platform.

http://www.gamesradar.com/ea-says-mass-effect-2-sales-on-ps3-have-been-meaningful/
Mass Effect 2 was an important test for the PlayStation Network. In addition to arriving on release day, the download eats up more than 12 GB of hard disk space, but Riccitiello said it still accounted for more than 10% of the game's overall sales. This, he noted, is in spite of EA not pouring any real marketing budget into the game. It's not a huge number, to be sure, but it is certainly not negligible.

"This was really more about proving it can be done than it was proving what the opportunity would be. So an unmarketed game one year after the original was done on the Xbox and the PC, we released the PS3 and managed to do very, very well with it," he said.

If you look at these rumours closely, it's pointless stuff to be concerned about. And it's the nature of the beast also, so to speak. Projects this large have various issues present themselves and can be quite dynamic at times. Plus, the whole MS is behind Sony in software development. Isn't that somewhat obvious to expect? SCE have several more teams on software development than them; the majority of whom have matured throughout the last generation. All launch software, or launch targeted software, runs into various issues. It's part of the difficulty of working within constrained limits.

Interesting insight, thanks for that. So they are behind on both SW and HW, that doesn't bode well. I went through 3 xboxs in 2006 and can see the same thing happening again if they rush it to market. Well not to me personally once bitten twice shined and all that. Can't wait for the 21st though should be interesting to see what they have planned.

Why do I feel like the delay is caused by trying to invent new ways to play using Kinect? There are three types of games you can play with Kinect, and that's Dancing, on rails action games, and sports games, that's it. I think they lost time trying to invent new ways to play using Kinect instead of focusing on the hardcore and now they're late.
