Well, I have to say that before I watch this, I've had my expectations pushed so low that it can only be a pleasant surprise when I watch it...right? Right???

It is almost like some of you forgot that this is made by the master troll, Hideki Anno.

It's weird, and it's not bad. It just shat on everybody's expectations based on 2.22 and the infamous preview. But it's interesting and a good build up to the presumably final movie.

The intro alone is worth watching it for.

You'll certainly be surprised, it's not really bad but some of this stuff really catches you off guard and you'll be confused for a good part of the movie, if not all of it.

I don't think anyone (except Anno) expected the movies to go this route, Anno manage to reach new levels of trolling, that alone makes it all worth it

Yep, pretty much what Norante said

Sooo excited! Hopefully Gods message plays at the beginning. I've been listening to the soundtrack and it sounds like the perfect song to play at the beginning of an epic Eva movie. In fact the soundtrack in general is fucking amazing.

For all the criticisms I had of this movie, I had an urge to rewatch it, and I did enjoy it the second time. I liked this movie. It's just a mind-fuck with no answers to give you, that's all.

i adjusted my expectations because of the responses in this thread and i ended up enjoying the film. i understand the issues with the film but... it was entertaining.

I was excited to watch it this upcoming weekend.

You guys are putting a damper on that excitement.

If you're expecting it to be Evangelion 1.0/2.0--

Me and my friend are convinced this is going to be the biggest troll Anno has ever planned. He's breaking hearts Metal Gear Rising style.

4.0 You can (not) end

Live action.

Is that the official name? Sounds awesome. My mind is already racing about what might happen and its connection (if any) to the original series. Seriously can't wait. Just thinking about it is making me all giddy.

At the end of the day we already have Eva, so even if the rebuild series falters towards the end it's going to give us something else to talk and think about. It's going to be crazy and its going to make you say what the fuck and its going to be epic. The soundtrack is going to be insane and its fucking Evangelion. I'm excited either way.

The main thing I've always loved about Eva is Shinji. People say he does dumb shit and whines a lot. But he reminds me of myself. I have pretty bad self confidence. But I also love how he feels like the most realist character in a show. We all would be fucked up and make stupid decisions if we were 14 and had this burden on our shoulders. In fact at any age it would be no different. Shinji is a bit more extreme at times but for the most part? The things he says and the way he acts hits close to home. I haven't seen 3.33 since my bluray isn't here yet but I'm very excited.

These movies confuse the hell out of me. This series is just a mess. I watched the entire original series and the alternate ending. Everything after that...I don't know what it is...are these sequels? Prequels? Remakes? I just don't get it. What's the point?

impressions

big-pink-lips-chan character design is god awful, it doesn't belong to the artstyle of eva, it's like it's imported from AKB0048 pr something, yikes.

I liked the aerial battle and the music in the beginning, rest of it was just pile of nonsense I'm sure a lot of 'believers' will try to make sense of and bring excuses for how all the jumbled mess it's all too deep and everything.

This movie skips a whole lot, it's too much, you can use your imagination and hints to fill all of those if you want, that won't excuse how horribly directed this movie was. It kind of reminds me of those anime movies that are supposed to recap an entire season of TV series and they cut out everything that's called development and play everything on fast forward, only showing couple of set pieces and that's that. Even then, most scenes look so confusing and fast, the awful colors smear it even more, makes most action scenes quite hard to watch and see exactly what's happening without repeated views, that's pretty bad. This was definitely not the eva action that I enjoyed in the past.

I'm not expecting anything to be told in future entry (ies), though they definitely created such a huge gap that can be filled with more things later for future milking if necessary. origins of this new organization and everything.

I like Kaji's character though, hope they didn't kill him off screen or something, the only thing eva that still like to see more, couldn't care less about the other nonsense :P
Toji's sister was good too I guess, like the character design. yeah can't think of much positives here.

definitely the story hinted in 2.22 preview looked infinitely more interesting for a movie than whatever this was. I still like to see those if they decided to make them someday in any form.

The 'official' idea was that it's Eva for a new generation, without the budget issues, with more 'advanced' animations and no time restraints. However I've only seen the first 2 movies and so far all that has some truth to it but it seems to be a veil to cover up the actual reason these rebuild movies exist. A lot of the stuff in the movies point to the original series already taking place with somethings being obviously different, be it story or visual cues or new characters. Is it an alternative timeline? A sequel? Who knows! Maybe 3.33 reveals more, maybe it doesn't. 4.44 should however.

Just got my bluray last week, and I must admit that I really enjoyed this movie quite a lot. It was nice to see something completely different, and I was actually intrigued by what we learned (or didn't learn) instead of pissed off. It's really cool to see these characters pushed beyond and into an area that we've never seen before
(post 3rd impact)
. That being said, although the CG didn't bother me too much, I felt that the choreography of the action was sub-par, especially compared to Anno's previous work. Also, a lot of my enjoyment of this movie is kind of predicated on what will be revealed in 4.0. To me I see this movie as a really cool setup (I can see why they wanted 3.0 and 4.0 to be a double feature), but if nothing is revealed or resolved in 4.0, then yeah, this new storyline will be kind of a wasted dead-end.

My wishlist for 4.0 is that
Asuka and/or Rei fills in the blanks for Shinji as they wander the wastelands, and for a somewhat clear resolution such as the world being either destroyed or rebuilt (as per Kaworu's statement), or at least something along those lines.
If 4.0 ends with nonsense or a cliffhanger, then yeah, it'll kind of suck the life out of the movies for me.

Ironic that the animation has actually regressed in some instances. Also the storyboard in some of the action sequences is downright bad.

I do have a theory on Asuka ...

I think she's a clone, and still has some angel DNA in her (the eye under the patch). I also think maybe her mental issues made them renumber Unit 07 to Unit 02 to have more control over her.

02 in 3.0 is the same 02 in the 2.0. That's why it has cybernetic parts for the areas it got damaged at the end of 2.0 under Mari's control (left interchangeable arm, right side of head/face).

what is the name of the final movie and when is it coming out in Japan?

The Japanese title is Evangelion Final :|| (the symbol means end/repeat)

English subtitle (which are the "you can (not) blank" ones) hasn't been revealed yet.

Having time to digest this movie I kinda understand why I enjoyed 1 and 2 better.

1 and 2 was basically pushing my nostalgia buttons while at the same time sprinkling new stuff on it. More so with 2. By the end of 2 I was exited to see what new direction the rest was going to take with the same format ( nostalgia with new stuff sprinkled on top). The 3rd one had none of that, it was all new and also very frustrating with the way the characters behaved. For some reason I felt as frustrated as shinji while watching the movie ( maybe intentional) looking for a payoff or a callback to make up for all the non answers.

Also to top it off I was loving the way Asuka, Rei and shinji were relating in 2. It seemed perfect and that was also taken away from me. Anno promised me fan service, I felt trolled.

Why Evangelion 3.33 sucks

- It's not a film, it's a fan fiction circlejerk with pretty images and sound
- There is no cohesion or pacing, it's a sequence of scenes packed together to present certain vague narrative points and makes no attempt to actually tell a story or develop characters
- It feels like a 95 minute intro movie of a videogame which doesn't exist (yet?)
- It throws away everything developed by the previous two films just to try something "different", except that different thing is much worse
- It's stupid
- It's boring
- I hate Anno
- I hate Khara

:(

yeh. wonder what happened. based off the preview 2.22 had, it looks like a different movie was being made, but then they scrapped it.

The preview didn't actually lie.
All those events actually did occur, but they just occurred between the two movies. LOL!
Fuck Anno!!!!

"Evangelion: Final" is the (provisory?) English title. The Japanese title is "Shin Evangelion Gekijōban :||".

Oh, you're right. The english title would be Evangelion Final - You Can (not) blah. Japanese title is just the repeat bar.

Why I like it:

It's time-jumping us essentially to End of Evangelion. Which I suspect was always the plan here, given that rebuild is actually a continuation of the original series.

Ironic that the animation has actually regressed in some instances. Also the storyboard in some of the action sequences is downright bad.

Yeah I love the animation in the original series. It isn't as advanced so to speak, but it just has this nice feeling to it. The rebuild series so far isn't too bad and it has a lot of attention to detail at times and make no mistake some scenes do look beautiful with some nice scenery and cinematography. Sometimes things just look odd however. Sometimes the faces look off and I'm not a massive fan of some of the angel designs. The love/hate relationship with the CG is another kettle of fish.

EOE is a while other ballgame however, fucking sublime.

Nice Anno avatar BTW, love that crazy man.

count me in as being very disappointed with the action scenes, the CGI EVAs looks like plastic / rubber, they remind me of the awful CGIs in berserk. The action scenes are also confusing most of the time, it's all lights, fireworks and flashes.
The final confrontation between 13 and 02 was rather lackluster as well and they bloody pull a gundam fin funnels/bits/fangs..etc on us , what the hell?! They also didn't explain how does those bits work or who is controlling it or how Shinji miraculously knows how to pilot an eva because fuck logic and ritsuko

What is miraculous about Shinji piloting an Eva? He's been doing that for two movies already.

I watched the movie a while back and this is pretty much what I thought of it. I was extremely disappointed with how this movie was presented. Ugh.

Evangelion 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo

I'm not going to post in the primary eva thread cuz I dont' want to get bashed by multiple hardcore eva fanatics. Plus I'd rather be surrounded by people who know me than not.

Personally, I didn't think this movie was very good. I would say the breakdown of the movie is so concrete that there you can actually see the segmentation. It's extremely jarring. It's like watching the stereotypical chickflick segmentation right before your eyes. Rather than seamlessly weave you into the experience, I felt like they had multiple ideas set up and then tried to sow them together to make one narrative/movie. It's unwieldy.

This is mostly going to be story by the way. I found the movie extremely boring. It's hard to care about a character, in this case Shinji, who sort of regressed back to his confused state, proceeds to make mistakes time and time again, and self-pity himself. It's painful. However, this isn't even the worst part. Having watched
Gargantia episode 3 and this sort of around the same time frame made me realize how stupid everyone's anger is. While justified that everyone has the right to be angry with Shinji I find it idiotic. He went to go save Aynami in 2.22 and then ended up causing the Third Impact without his knowledge. You are adults. You have a right to be angry with how things turned out. Hell, I'd be angry too. To vent it on someone who was technically responsible but didn't mean to cause the Third Impact with all of its atrocities is another thing. I think it's easy to pin the blame and target on Shinji. I feel extremely sorry for him because he was trying to do something right and ended up getting shafted for it. Misato and Asuka as a result suck in this movie. I'm sure others will disagree and try to rationalize their behavior. I have too. I understand their point. Doesn't mean I have to like it though.

I think the part that annoyed me the most about this movie was that it was massive infodump. You know when you're watching like a series and sometimes there's that one episode delegated to infodumping? Like... in Legend of Korra, that penultimate episode was a super infodump? This movie felt like that. I don't know... something about that was just offputting. Rather than slowly easing in the audience to learning stuff, this movie is sort of a just "here's what happened. here's everything explained. the end." Maybe some of yall will feel differently. This is just how I viewed it.

I thought much of the movie has me enjoying less because of the liberal jargon and technicality throwings going on but honestly after thinking about it, I don't think this is the case. I thoroughly enjoyed 1.11 and 2.22. There was quite a bit of stuff I didn't fully understand cuz I didn't know the technical stuff but I understood sort of where it was coming from. Here, this isn't the case.

Meh. I'm sure there's more I can say but... I don't know... w/e. I'll read other's posts and try to have a discussion.
