The backlash in this thread! I haven't given it a proper watch on Blu-ray yet since I'm still waiting for my copy, but yeah, I'm not sure I liked what was going on. But I'm still eagerly awaiting the final film though!

CG EVA's are the worst thing to ever happen

Couldn't even follow half the action in that scene which was a part of what made the Unit 02 and MP Eva fight in EOE so amazing.

WTF are those the Rebuild versions of the MP Evas? If so, wow quite a massive downgrade from the elegant, yet utterly terrifying ones of EOE. Also, WTF at the combined form of Unit 02 and Unit 08 (I'm guessing because it has the same coloring as Mari's plug-suit). The only interesting thing in that scene was the Combined 02-08 leaping off the cliff into what looked like a huge amount of AT fields and whatever the fuck that massive blue thing in the background was.

I haven't watched it yet but I've rewatched gunbuster like three times in the past week. Am I setting myself up for mass disappointment.

Many things in this film don't make sense at all.

*
Why don't anyone from WillE talk or explain things to Shinji at all. Okay, you're butthurt because he caused 3rd impact. But it's fucking obvious from the beginning that he has no idea whatsoever that he caused it. How fucking dumb do you have to be not explaining things to him and therefore allowing him to defect to the other side? These dumbasses deserve to die.

*
Why the fuck is Kaworu dumb enough to put the collar on himself after taking it off from Shinji? WTF? What's the point of it? On that note, I'm not even sure if he died due to the collar or because he self-suicide via EVA-13.

* Not enough character background stories.
Those times showing the now decrepit NERV and Shinji playing piano with Kaworu could have been used to show what happened during 3rd impact and how every character changed. On that note, I kind of like the new crews but we don't even know anything about them.
Which leads me to wonder if this Revival thing wouldn't be better as TV series instead of movies.

Interesting stuff:

* I do love how Anno basically spit on everyone who belittle and called Shinji a wimp the first time around. This time, they have no fucking excuse.
Shinji is basically ex-communicated by everyone, being misinformed about the situations, and left alone to his own device with no friend but Kaworu
. This time around he has every right to snap out of his mind and for very good reason.

*
Rei III's question when posed with imminent destruction: "What would Ayanami Rei" do? Her answer was surprisingly that of self-preservation as evidenced by her ejecting herself away from her EVA unit. This is the opposite of what Rei 2 & 3 in the TV series would do in the face of similar situation. They'd just sacrifice themselves like the dolls that they were.

*
What is that thing in central dogma?
I wish for once they stop being vague and just start telling us things.

Awful stuff:

* The CGI. I thought I saw early version of 3D Cartoon shows at one point.

Talk about being vague! :p Which thing?

i believe he's refering to the lilin corpse in central dogma, but more importantly, what the fuck is mk 06 doing riding on her? didn't it pretty much pierced unit 1 with a spear and casually float down to earth by the end of 2.0?

Because otherwise there would be no movie. Blame Anno.

It's implied in that scene that the collar would blow off if it wasn't being used by anyone, and he mentioned he would do it at some point, probably in case he had to kill himself.

I think they will expand that with background material outside the movies. I would certainly love some more exposition, but I guess the idea is that
the viewer should feel as confused as Shinji when watching the movie, and exposing story elements could break that or something. Again, blame Anno.

The Rebuild movies in particular have been pretty vague about its elements. It's a stark contrast from the TV series, but you really shouldn't expect much explanation because it doesn't seem to be their focus.

Oh, that. :lol

Since the 12th angel is living inside the Mark 06, my best guess is that sometime during the time skip, the angel possessed the Eva (something similar happened in the original series iirc) and tried to fuse with Lilith to start another impact. Then the two spears got chucked into Lilith and the Mark 06 to stop it from happening.

That's up to anyone's guesses. What we know is that
it came from Lilith, since it exploded with her.

4.0 will pretty much be the movie that will either give some answers or none at all. Still, you guys should have known better to not trust the 4.0 preview after
the 3.0 preview.
Though it's worth noting that
the preview can serve as background for what happened between 2.0 and 3.0.

So? I fail to see the problem with the bolded.
It's not like the collar self-destruct upon removal. It was benign for quite long period of time between him removing it and putting it on his neck. What's wrong with just throwing it off to the crater or some kind?
I don't know, I just thought it makes more sense that way.

I hope that's

Lilith's head from "The End of Evangelion". But it's likely just Lilith's head from 3rd impact in Evangelion 2.0 (assuming a Lilith creature was produced from that incident - which we don't know because we didn't see much about 3rd impact!!!)

This is merely conjecture of my part based on what we've seen, but the collar triggered when Kaworu became the 13th Angel because it was built to prevent the event of a person "ascending", kinda like Shinji in the end of 2.0. He wanted to use it because if that event happened, he would need to die anyway.

Fair enough. I did see a scene where
a monitor that track the collar's progress indicating that its pattern has shifted to blue
. But that'd also mean that his role in this one is miniscule. Like what was the point of his role here apart from
being Shinji's temporary friend?
In the original, his presence was devastating because he was a friend who turned into an enemy.

That is his role - in a world where everyone else has shat on him, Kaworu is his only friend, and he gets to see his friend's head explode to gory bits right in front of him. Because this is Evangelion and we can't let Shinji be happy.

I'm not sure where you are getting at. Even in the TV series he worked as a "temporary friend". You could say his main point is that
he had to pay with his life for Shinji's desire to make things go back to what they once were. It's more serious when you remember that in the entire movie, Shinji was running away from his actions and their consequences, and when he finally decided to do something about that, he killed the only person who supported him through that moment by listening to his selfish desires of ridding himself of the guilt, instead of stopping like Kaworu pleaded. The way I see it, Shinji is far more impacted by his death in 3.0 than he was in the TV series.

The rest of your post is (sadly) quite accurate, but about
Rei III. I always interpreted her character as "waking up" from being used like the previous Rei's. Rei III has the potential to act unlike previous Rei.

But Kaworu had an active role of actually
being an Angel and actually fighting Shinji for a good while before eventually realizing that he's going after the wrong creature and then he gave up.
In this one, the only role left for him was that of
Shinji's friend. His Angel role is completely subliminated
.

He's there to
sell ridiculous amounts of merchandise to the squeeing kawaii clowns. Seriously, there's nothing to his character. He's not even a character. He's fanservice.

I watched it now and I have to say it is an enjoyable film. I mean it has a lot of problem, but it is still enjoyable. So yeah. But I have low standards.

just finished watching and what is wrong with shinja? He's been gone for 14 years and does not wonder what happen or why does no on explain what happen?

Here's what happens when you every time you explain things to Shinji:

He does question it,
and in the end he's even begging Kaworu for information about wtf is going on as the dude sits there silently with his head in his hands. Kaworu has it all figured out and all he does is utter a couple vague warnings and offer some shit advice.
It's all so fucking ridiculous.

Nah, when Shinja finally catches on that he's just a pawn and everyone is playing him he packs his bags and attempts to fuck off. Not before another angel attacks and he's forced to return out of guilt, of course.

I want so badly for Shinji to return to the Wonder and tell everyone to eat shit as he reclaims his EVA. They don't deserve it.

While very pretty, this wasn't a very good film. Nothing makes sense. And not in the Evangelion "If you think about it, you can piece things together...", just in strange for the sake of strange.

In the manner of Red Letter Media, I ask the following questions.

How did Unit 01 get into space?
How did Kaworu's Unit 06 end up in Central Dogma?
Where is everyone? Toji's sister survived, so where is he? Kensuke? Class Rep?
Unit 08, 09, 13, where is 07, 10, 11, 12?
What the hell was NERV doing the last 14 years?
What has WILLE been doing the last 14 years?

The entire time skip was a nice idea, but it seems so wasted.

Wow, impressions here are not good =/

When is the DVD available in the UK? I need to see this.
It's gonna be probably a year or more for the western release.

There are alternative means.. As usual.

After watching it a second time with English subtitles, I really enjoyed 3.33. Not as much as 2.22 but it was difficult to top in my opinion. And the soundtrack was excellent.

My take on it:
Eva01 was stopped when Eva06 descended from the moon with Kaworu, confined into a coffin by Nerv (there's a Nerv logo on the coffin) and sent into space to avoid it resuming 3rd impact.
Eva06 ended up fighting (and killing) Lilith who was in the process of initiating 3rd Impact (if you've seen EoE, I think it's easy to infer what had become of Lilith during near third impact)
It's unclear. They might be alive or they might have mutated into 'failures of infinity', the red eva-like thingies you see in the ruins of Tokyo 3 and in the Terminal dogma shaft.
No idea and not very important either, I guess. They might have been destroyed during the time gap or might still exist somewhere.
I think it's either been dismantled or everyone left save for Gendo and Fuyutsuki. The near third impact incident definitely lead to some kind of schism.
I think WILLE and Misato have been gathering ressources and devising their plan do stop Gendo & co from ever conducting final impact and built the Wunder, a warship capable of killing a god.

Everyone hates the CG? The plot is what it is, but I thought the visuals looked great, just like all the other Rebuild movies.

I'm fine with it. It doesn't bother me at all. I think some fans are just 2D animation purists (which I do understand).

I thought the CG works pretty well in several scenes and not so much in others. Would I prefer it all in 2D animation? Yeah sure but it's really not a huge deal to me.

Though I will say that 4.0 preview looks really rough.
Here's hoping it's unfinished footage or better yet, doesn't appear at all in the whole film lol

I really don't think these questions are supposed to be answered. The whole point is that you're supposed to feel as displaced and out of touch as Shinji, wondering what the hell's been going on while you were away and frustrated by the lack of answers. If you left this film feeling confused and unsatisfied, Anno did his job.

Almost nothing from the end of the 2.0 teaser showed up in 3.0.

Well, while it's silly to disagree over aesthetics because they're so subjective, I really do think that Evangelion 3.33 is astonishingly ugly, even when compared compared to the previous Rebuild films which aren't exactly lookers to begin with.

I was kind of disappointed after initially watching it, but after thinking about it for a while I think it's actually pretty good. I watched 2.22 right before this one, so there was definitely a huge shift in the way the story was told, but I think it's best to view 3.33 as a prologue to 4.00, really. I think there are a lot of subtle clues in there that help explain things more clearly and just enough batshit insane things occured to think about for a year+ until the next one releases.

I posted this in the spoiler thread, but
it's possible that everything that was shown in the 2.0 preview happened during the 14 year time skip

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is the case.

Why couldn't anybody sit Shinji down and explain shit to him? A lot of stuff likely would've been avoided if someone just did that. This goes especially towards Misato.
I know you and your group are pissed at him, but keeping him in the dark just makes it more likely Shinji would repeat his mistake.
