Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

Sony has got the indie scene on lock right now, so that's one thing. Right now they have Diablo III and The Witness, both likely timed exclusives, so there's that too.

Sony will be fine, I don't think they'll ever be lacking in third party exclusives.

Good point.

I wouldn't be surprised is Diablo III hits the 360 and Durango the same time the Playstation versions do. No where in the press release or actual announcement does it mention exclusivity. It doesn't really matter to me though because I won't get it regardless but I think it'll be a pretty big multi platform launch.

I hope Microsoft gets severe backlash from consumers for their forceful attitude in the gaming industry this upcoming gen.
I'm sorry, but every single rumor I hear makes me less and less interested in the upcoming "Xbox".

Always online, no used games, $299 model with subscription of $10 Dollars a month. For what? For the next gears and halo? No thanks.

6 months back? I hope your ready by November. I'd hate for your console to have a 60% failure rate again.

Well at least you realize that all of this is rumors and are open minded.

I guess they have a pretty tight schedule for these launch titles, so any issues could set them back quite quickly.

Launching a console is a fuckin' nightmare, but fun to read about the drama!

Would Sony be paying for that though?

That would be more SE saving money on producing a version that won't sell.

Yes, I would imagine Sony would most certainly be paying for that, like any third party exclusive these days.

But they're in a better position than anyone to pay for that sort of exclusive, given how much Final Fantasy slants towards Playstation in terms of sales.

I could've sworn in the actual announcement they put in a "first" or something to signify it'll at least be a timed exclusive, but kept it ambiguous enough that we know it's probably going to hit 360 and Durango too.

The preposition that either company has some sort of priority list or some sort of prerogative to pursue one market "more" than another has become quite pervasive across GAF as of late and I'm not sure why.

They both need to tackle all the markets hard or they face death by iPad. If games are all Sony's got or if TV is all MS has got, they both lose.

Couldn't agree more. It's getting a little tiring reading posts like his.

I'm not sure how anyone can look at anything Sony/Microsoft have done and assume that one or the other would willingly place less emphasis on games - in the hope that their product would be better positioned as an expensive media server.

Know that when the time comes - and Sony wants to hype/market the media functions of the PS4 - the message won't be all that different from MS.

As for Microsoft's internal/games struggles. It's by far the most interesting rumour I've seen come through in the last few months. A little concerning for the developers/studios in question - and some of Microsoft's management/planning. Could ultimately end up worse for Sony in this case though - Microsoft opening it's cheque book is never something a competitor wants. We'll see in the coming months though.

Nothing was said to that effect and the interview after "tonight is just about Sony" was the most that would be said about it.

Diablo III and The Witness are not exclusives at all.

How does that alter my point?

I was just alluding to the fact that Final Fantasy and Sony is a unique situation, where exclusivity benefits both the publisher and the manufacturer given the game wouldn't sell on Xbox anyway. So Sony wouldn't need to pay.

At least not enough to make the port worthwhile.

Well Sony will have to pay something, either development or marketing.

The 360 version didn't sell well, but it wasn't insignificant either. I believe around 15-20% of total sales for FFXIII were on the 360.

So the deal is likely multiple millions to secure, but nothing overwhelmingly large for Sony. It's one of the only franchises I can see that slants in one direction so significantly as to make financial sense to pursue.

Something like GTA or CoD would cost hundreds of millions of dollars to secure, and that's not going to happen.

Doesn't Sony have a lot of money too though? Isn't Sony technically a larger company than Microsoft? I feel like people see Sony as a small business compared to Microsoft. They're both practically their own banks. I would think Sony would be just as capable of outbidding for developer exclusives as Microsoft.

Pretty sure you'd be wrong.

This sounds about right. Explains why the announcement/reveal has been delayed at least once (probably twice). Seems like the development of Windows 8 may have caused some delays in the development of the Nextbox which is based on windows 8. Also seems like Microsoft is playing reactionary catchup as far as features are concerned. Perhaps delaying their launch is the better choice than rushing to market before the games are ready. I really hope there is a decent differentiation between the Nextbox and PS4.... otherwise I will have little reason to pick up the Nextbox. (A few exclusives are not going to persuade me to pay $500~)

Pretty sure you'd be wrong.

Due to the flop Windows 8 has been I bet Microsoft is hurting for money more than ever.

Sony's money is partitioned into a massive variety of divisions, everything from financial services, to music publishing, to movie production.

They're providing development aid.

While he might be wrong in Sony having more cash than MS (though Sony has a lot of cash, despite being down in recent years), I am sure Sony still has more than enough to dish out on 3rd party exclusives, if they want. But I think they operate very differently, they would rather invest that cash in building their own studios etc. Thats the better strategy IMO.

Haha...you should take a look at Microsoft's FY earning releases sometime...maybe listen in on their conference calls. ;-)

I still doubt the 720 will be delayed or anything of the kind even if this rumor is true, they will release that console this Xmas season, because they have to.

Would not be that surprising if the rumor is true, since the reveal itself got delayed, causing some uncertainty regarding the console

They have to avoid the RROD disaster again, and rushed hardware is not the way to do it

I am pretty sure both MS and Sony have enough money to get 3rd party exclusive games it's just a matter of it being worth the ROI for them .
Plus you can see that over pass few years Sony just rather buy the companies \ make teams bigger compare to the old days , MS doing the same but to late for early software .

Yeah, even a quick look at their stock values, Microsoft's is currently double that of Sony. Kind of makes me curious why Microsoft is rumored to have the least powerful console considering their company's position.

After all, PS3's initial output was nothing short of shitty.

Lair. Damn.

It's a good move securing good third party content while the internal teams work on something worthy.

Lair wasn't a launch game. Sony had ten published titles released before Lair that had avergae to high scores.

Sony's first party offerings weren't really horrible.

Because not all the company's assets are for their gaming division?

The rumor did not get delayed. You cannot delay something that was never official and its just a little too convenient that the invites went out on the day is was "rumored" to be on. I honestly think there was information lost in transit and the sending out invites for a may 21st reveal part got left out.

But, I highly doubt this rumor. Maybe a game from a first party studio is getting pushed back but there is no way in hell something this big has that big of an issue. The RRoD or any other catastrophic failure is unpredictable and potentially impossible to find until millions of units have been pushed out. Both the PS4 and Durango will face early hardware failure and issues, that's a given. What matters is how swiftly Sony and Microsoft can respond to those issues.

I'm a devote Sony fan and I hope this isn't the case.

C'mon Microsoft, get your act together. This is perhaps your biggest product behind Windows and Office. Its a console launch, I think MS needs to be reminded of that.

Oh dear pete nooooo NO! Final Fantasy has lost almost all of its magnitude.

Great, MS gets Respawn and probably Fallout and the Elder Scrolls, Sony gets the Final Fantasy mess. They might as well buy DmC while they're at it.

Yeah, no. Elder Scrolls and Fallout are not going to be exclusive to anyone, unless they buy Bethesda!

Okay now I'm trippin'. The Witness isn't even a TIMED PS4 exclusive? Is it coming to PC simultaneously or something?

Witness is a timed PS4 exclusive FOR CONSOLES ONLY. Meaning it will arrive on Durango + Wii U + PS3 + 360 at a later date, but it can be released on PC / iOS at any time.

Woooooooowwwwwwwwww!

MS gets Respawn, Fallout, and Elderscrolls! And a 6 million+ selling franchise means nothing at all! I've heard everything. Is GTA and COD next?

It's almost certainly the best strategy for long-term benefits depending on the quality/sales output. From a gamers standpoint - it doesn't offer a lot outside of keeping games tied to a console as an exclusive, depending on what you own (or your alliegance based on some of the posts I've read recently...) it's either a bad thing, or bragging rights.

In the short-mid term though - depending on how far Microsoft goes with their bank account, and how big the exclusives are - it's a substantial benefit to a console launch. I have no idea what they could buy with their money - or what companies are willing to sell - but you can bet that if the next Microsoft console has the next COD (or something that can garner the same sort of attention), Sony is in for a world of hurt. Of course, I think the likelihood that MS would go after something like that - to be a little extreme (but you get the point).

Yeah, even a quick look at their stock values, Microsoft's is currently double that of Sony. Kind of makes me curious why Microsoft is rumored to have the least powerful console considering their company's position.

I'm not sure there is any correlation between the power of a console, it's success in the marketplace, and the financial position of the manufacturer.

Damn, this is the first I'm hearing of this. Do you have a source/link by any chance?

http://www.polygon.com/2013/2/20/4010968/the-witness-playstation-4-jon-blow

PlayStation 4 will be the only [home] console The Witness is on during the game's "release window," Blow said. The Witness was previously announced for release on Windows PC and iOS sometime in 2013. The developer's previous game, Braid, was launched as a timed exclusive for Xbox 360 and later came to PC and PS3.

If the Verge leaked lineup is real, and the Respawn being exclusive is true as well, then that is 5 launch exclusives. That wouldn't really be that bad, Ryse(which going from this thread is now a controller based game)PGR5/Forza, whatever the Zombie game is, and that family game. It's not outstanding, but it's not bad either. I'm sure we'll see stuff from Black Tusk, Turn 10, 343, and Lionhead in the second wave of games.

Link to line up leak, please.

Free pizza from pizza hut for the first 2 months.

If the Durango has as much advertising as windows 8 stuff, all it will need is a next gen cod and fifa and a casual/family kinect game.

I think MS will make a good impression on the 21st even if certain games are behind, They cant afford bad press, when sony's press is quite positive.

The people in charge of xbox are not amateurs, if this is true , the added pressure hopefully will refocus them and they will concentrate on whats important - The Games + innovation the competitors dont have.

You aren't reading the stock values correctly. Sony and Microsoft don't have the same number of shares outstanding.

The formula is Stock Price * Number of Shares = Market Capitalization

So Microsoft is 32.61 * 8.35B = 272.33 Billion
Sony is 16.56 * 1B = 16.56 Billion

Microsoft isn't twice as big as Sony, it's roughly 16 times as big.

Due to the flop Windows 8 has been I bet Microsoft is hurting for money more than ever.

No.

Microsoft profits increase to over $6 billion in Q3 2013 despite flat Windows revenue.
