Wii U Satisfaction Thread

I have not played it yet. I played the original and sucked at it, and I played Primes 1 and 3. As somebody who specifically likes Mario/Kirby style platformers and has little qualm with the idea of backtracking (I like nonlinearity in games) but can get somewhat lost between game sessions, what should I prepare myself for?

Well if you played the original, its pretty similar to that, only better in every way imaginable. The original had a great premise, but a flawed execution. The rooms all looked the same, there was no map, no easy way to replenish health, and the bosses and interesting challenges were few and far between. Super Metroid fixes all of this, while adding better controls, more interesting weapons and tools, pretty and varied graphics, and a fantastic soundtrack. I would say if you like 2D-games, you will probably LOVE Super Metroid! Looking forward to see what you write about it when you get to it!

I keep buying games but not finishing them. I have ZombiU unfinished, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate barely played and I recently bought Most Wanted U which I've been enjoying. I just bought Toki Tori 2 and Super Mario World.

It's actually really cool to have Miiverse to talk about old games, I must admit.

Probably a lot of swearing as I finally remember what "Nintendo Hard" meant. :D

30¢ Kirby's almost pathetically easy, on the other hand (albeit enjoyable).

Do any European GAFers know if Club Nintendo stars can be used to buy eShop games (like how you can still buy point cards for the Wii)? I just found twelve unused Club Nintendo vouchers while tidying up and am now sitting on over 4k points. Would be great to be able to use them with my Wii U Deluxe digital promotion, but can't find any way of doing so currently. If not, hopefully Nintendo will work something out in the future, else I'll just have to buy loads of Virtual Console games on Wii and get a discount when they finally arrive on Wii U.

believe it or not I am going to run out of menu spaces left for the icons on my Wii U :(

38 left I can delete demos to make room later in the year but 90 spaces will not last the need of the year since I already filled it with 52 and have yet to download the VC that came out this week

we need folders soon

It'd be funny if that's why the Virtual Console only has 8 games on it now. If we buy something and delete it, we can redownload for free right?

What's weird is that, if I'm not mistaken, the more you download into the 3DS, the more menu squares automatically appear so you won't run out! Or am I imagining things?

They also need to include that 3DS feature where you can change the menu's size, so more icons fit within a single screen.

I'm thinking of buying a Wii U tomorrow on my way home from work. Amazon doesn't seem to carry it themselves so since I can't use my prime I might as well pay tax and get it tomorrow. I'm going to be getting the deluxe version ofc, I'm mostly just buying it for Monster Hunter 3 ATM. Does anyone know any good deals going on this week for the console online or irl stores?

Yes, that's true. My 3DS menu got two notches bigger. Both times it just looked like the space was running out real soon and then bam!

I suppose we cannot be 100% sure Wii U doesn't do the same? It was mentioned in the 3DS manual so we knew right away but still... we'd need someone to test it. I guess there currently isn't enough games for Wii U.

I purchased a brand new Deluxe system for $247, including tax, from Meijer on Friday. Here are my impressions so far.

  1. Updating took about 2 hours (it also stopped randomly once in between), which I found to be a bit excessive but not horrific. Thankfully, when it stopped in between, it resumed downloading at the same point when I retried.
  2. Transfering data from Wii to Wii U is convoluted and I can see a lot of people having issues with this. It worked fine for me, took about an hour, but is archaic. The Pikmin totally made up for that though, and it's easily the best "loading"-style screen I've ever seen.
  3. I cannot figure out how to check download status; I don't know where to navigate to...
  4. ...because I downloaded the Rayman demo (which is really, really awesome by the way), but didn't see the status until it suddenly popped up as complete on the main menu
  5. Overall, I'm so far very happy. I made the purchase with a certain level of expectations and so far they have been met. Have Need for Speed, Lego City, and NintendoLand, but so far have just been enjoying Rayman.

If anyone has some input about number 3 I'd appreciate the help! I know there is a way to view it, but am currently unable to locate it.

Thanks! I... haven't ever used the Home button really yet I guess. Need to explore that some.

I meant to add to my post two posts up; I only play around 3-4 hours of video games per week. With that said, the Wii U at $250 is perfectly acceptable for me, even if it only has <5 games I'm interested in right now. Those 5 games, particularly Lego City, will chew up easily half a year of my gaming time, by which point Pikmin and who knows what else will come out.

I did a crummy drawing saying the ship battles were cool in the Assassin's Creed III Miiverse (because they are).

I got a message from the moderators that I was posting spoilers and breaking the TOS.

It literally advertises this feature on the back of the box:

I went to reply and point this out in a friendly kind of way, but the only thing you can respond with are choices from a drop down menu, one of which is a very officious sounding "I did not violate the terms of service." Not sure I want to launch an inquest over it.

You sleazy spoiler-monger, you.

Does anyone know if you can play the original Wii Virtual Console version of Super Mario 64 with the gamepad controller (on the TV screen I mean, not the gamepad screen)?

Trying to decide if I want to "buy" the game with my Club Nintendo points before the offer expires May 5th.

No, you can't as of yet. N64 VC isn't yet on Wii U VC.

Nope, only the Wii's classic controller will work. When going to Wii mode, the Wii U actually emulates the Wii, meaning that non-Wii accessories won't work.

Bought the London panoramic tour. Really liked it.

Now, with a positive comment under my belt, I want to ask a question. Why is the pad screen so washed out? It seems like every game I play, the off-screen image is washed out compared to the TV. It seems like a system-wide issue and I can't find any settings to change it. Do we think this can / will be fixed in a software update? Is it even a known issue?

I'm not sure I know what you mean by washed-out, but, the GamePad's resolution is barely higher than 480i if I remember correctly. Is it possibly your TV (at HD resolution) just looks clearer?

Well the gamepad's contrast ratio is not going to compare to almost every TV on the market right now. But, maybe you have the display power saving setting turned on or something? I also think it looks better with a higher brightness setting.

Only games where I saw it were Sonic All Stars and Trine 2 before its update. Somehow Mario is a bit (just a bit, nothing compared to Sonic) blurred on the GamePad. All other games though: super crisp.

EDIT: sorry for the All title, looks like I can't edit it.

On my setup the 'pad and the tv have different color temperatures - my pad is of warm temp, while the tv is definitely cold, since I haven't bothered to properly calibrate it. Speaking of which, is you tv calibrated? Some sets have contrast boosted to 11 and beyond. As a result normal contrast displays look washed out in comparison (an unwitty factory trick which makes some tvs stand out on the store shelve).

I'm sure they could fix it by not using a cheap crappy screen in the pad. Till then, no fix. MH3U is night and day on my Panasonic compared to the padlet

It's probably your TV and not the gamepad. Many people crush the blacks on their monitors by selecting the wrong hdmi level or using dynamic contrast. Get a calibration Blu-ray like HD Essentials or something along those lines. After that your colors and contrast should be closer to the gamepad.

De-saturated almost. The colours don't 'pop' like they should.

Nah, my TV is calibrated and looks lovely, it's definitely the pad that's 'off'. I don't have any active contrast tomfoolery enabled.

I was hoping they could fix it through software. Just some options to adjust colour temperature and saturation would go a long way, I reckon. It's definitely a bummer when I play NSMBU, I tend to look down at the pad for long stretches of time and then when I glance up at the TV, it looks miles better.

I'm pretty certain it's not my TV. It's been calibrated and everything else looks fine on it.

Ah well, it's not the end of the world. Thanks for all the answers!

I just got mine and after 40 minutes the update is around 80%. I hope there isn't another big update.. I love how this gamepad controls my tv and directv dvr :D

The short answer is no. Nothing they can really do to solve the relatively shit shit panel used in the gamepad.

Saturation can be increased through software, but it'll look muddy given the contrast ratio.

Also doesn't help that there is a lot of video compression through the miracasting (helps save bandwidth and eliminate lag). Not sure of chip quality varies in this regard.

A few days into Wii U ownership and I find myself using off-TV play exclusively when possible, even if I'm just sitting on the couch in front of my TV. Anyone else find themselves doing this? It might just be because I have a shitty CRT anyway so the games look a bit better to my on the GamePad; slightly wider resolution, but it's so much smaller that the image looks a bit more crisp to me, even if I am closer to it.

I do it whenever I can, I use the big screen mainly for multiplayer. I didn't think it would be that much enjoyable

Mobility is a natural evolution to consuming content. In Wii U's case mobility is a strong word given the limited range, but it doesn't make it less appealing. Anyone with an iPad knows how it feels to browse web on it, a superior experience in most cases to browsing on a nearby PC despite its bigger/better rez screen.

The only game I don't prefer playing offscreen is Monster Hunter, because sadly off screen play was implemented rather poorly on that one. Not being able to use the camera lock is a real pain for me.

I don't agree on iPad vs PC, but iPad vs TV I do.

Do it. Miiverse Mods get overly strict at times.

By just turning on the Wii U with the Pro Controller? When I turn it on with the pad the pro cont. is shown as second controller and i ain't able to switch.

huh?
I turn the WiiU on with both, the gamepad and the pro controller, all the time.
even if I turn it on with the gamepad the pro controller is shown as No1.
I think you just have to make sure that the pro controller isn't "online" when you turn on your WiiU with the gamepad.

So my Wii U is coming later today. I have to leave for some time in the afternoon, though.

Is it okay to leave my Wii U on for a couple of hours while it's updating, or do I have to watch it at times to press a button or do something to it during this process? I want to play right when I get back, so it would be great if it's all done updating then. I'm also assuming it's initially on firmware 1.0 or something.
