Even with the screen turned off, the battery dies pretty fast.
What's the point to turn it off if it keeps receiving constant streaming/data from the console?
It's pretty much useless.

Playing a game with a different controller, don't want to see your TV screen being mirrored on the GamePad the whole time?

^^ I'll probably have to start doing this.

Not really.
I'm the only one that uses the TV so Off-TV is not really a selling point.
For example, I finished NSMBWii a few weeks ago and I decided to keep using the Wiimote for NSMBU just to don't break the habits. Thing is.. I really didn't need the gamepad at all so I turned the screen off but I constantly faced a dead gamepad when I wanted to change the game.

I think it is a was a big oversight you can't kill the controller completely but whatever..complaining won't change anything.

Well you are kind of.. agreeing with me here. I was just suggesting a use for the function. Turning off the screen is nice if you just don't want the screen on. Not because you want to save power, but because you don't want to be looking at it. I mean I keep mine in the dock any time I'm not using it, but if I'm doing like you there, using the Remote to play NSMBU, I don't need the TV to be mirrored in the dock.

So that is "the point" of it, which you seemed to have difficulty finding.

Though I am sure it helps with power drain as well, obviously, even if it's not hugely noticeable.

Isn't it the sensor bar that allows that Wii golf game demoed in the Wii U reveal video to work? Where the Gamepad is laid on the floor displaying the ball and the player swings the wiimote over it?

Doesn't seem like there should be any point of placing the gamepad on the floor if that is the case.
Using the IR camera would be a lot more accurate compared to using motion plus, especially if you aligning visually with the gamepad to hit the ball.
The IR might work for putting but it can't track the whole swing. The motion+ would have to be used for velocity. Maybe IR could be used for added accuracy but I'm pretty sure the camera doesn't have a high enough frame rate for something like that. The pad being on the floor was probably just for effect.

the demo likely used both IR and motion plus

sorry bit drunk so misunderstood a few bits but as i said with the next response it looks to me like it uses both
It's cool :). I'd have to watch the demo again to see. Wii Sports never (rarely?) used the sensor bar outside of the menus which makes me think they'd just use the motion plus. But yeah, I don't really know how they planned on doing it in the demo.

Leave your phone off for about a week, and most will see the battery drained as well. It's not exclusive to the Gamepad.

My iDevices last over a month on standby.. that's not off that's in low power sleep.

I'm lucky if my Gamepad has any battery left after being off for a week, so I just keep it permanently connected to it's charger, was getting tired of seeing the red light everytime I decided to play something.

Ninty went cheap on the battery in that sucker.

iPhone has standby? I thought it was just on or off.

Losing charge just by being off is just really odd, for any device, I would be worried it had a faulty battery. My GamePad hasn't seen a full week of being disconnected yet, but there's no reason for it to lose charge. After a day or two of being disconnected the charge it originally had is intact.

Seriously it seems more like you have a problematic unit.

I can leave a 360 controller off for a month or two and it can still have a charge, enough to play for hours. I can leave a DS Lite off for several months and play for hours. There's no excuse for these bad designs. Wii Remotes did this also, just not as fast as the gamepad.

So, vertical Wii U GAF. Is it really a good idea? With the fans evacuating upward, the dust pours inside, and placed the other way I wonder if the heat is evacuating correctly.

My internet was down, so I fired up Lego City for a bit today.

I really need to play it more. It's so fun. So much charm. I find myself not wanting to do the missions and just explore more, but since I don't have many cool disguise abilities, I should probably wait for a bit.

Can't wait till E3. :)

Just bought Lego City. The GameStop guy told me that I'd bought the last copy, and that he thought it was selling well, although they were under supplied.

I don't think you can point the fans upward, at least with the Nintendo stands. I find the stand gives enough clearance that heat isn't an issue.

OMG Nintendo why are you so awesome to me?

Dear Club Nintendo Member,

Thank you for your recent order of Super Metroid from Club Nintendo. We're sending this notification to let you know this title is going to be available from the Nintendo eShop for Wii U for 30 cents, as part of a special promotion starting on May 15.

Because you are a Wii U owner, we have refunded the 150 Coins you redeemed for Super Metroid. You may still use the code you received to download the game for free to play on Wii or Wii U. We hope you enjoy your game, and visit Club Nintendo again soon.

Completely worth the purchase by everyone I feel. I dare anyone to play this game and not have a smile on their face. Loading times are an issue but that's really only in the beginning where you are going back and forth between the city and station often. After a short while that stops. You start spending more and more time in the city and the missions are of a significant length the wait to leave them to go back to the city doesn't seem like a hassle anymore.

Nice!

I thought Little Inferno was cute, thought Nintendoland (apart from the Luigi's Mansion minigame) was boring, and Mario was excellent... but my console is seriously collecting dust while it waits for Smash and of course X.

Perhaps I should pick up MH3 Ultimate? Now's a good time as any to FINALLY get into the series and see what Japan loves so much about it.

Get Lego City Undercover, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and maybe ZombiU.

And Nintendo Land has Mario Chase too at least. That game is hella-fun.

When does the current .30 promotion expire? I believe it's Kirby Adventures for North America and then it will be Super Metroid. I just got a Wii U for my kids which they'll get this weekend. I would like to get the special promotion before it expires.

On the 15th I believe.

I just realized the Rayman Legends Olive Branch App was released almost exactly a year after the original internal trailer leaked (the one with the NFC stuff).
