Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

That's what I thought.

They're saying "tate" short for rotate. I thought they were joking. It's the first time I've ever heard such a thing.

I doubt that too. The option toggle is "yoko" or "tate," I don't see where "rotate" would come from. I'm not 100% on it, so don't quote me, but I wanna say "yoko" means wide. That may have been nonsense I read on the internet though.

From http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=9665

The word “tate” comes from a Japanese adjective which means “vertical,” and is pronounced “tah-teh,” though the common mispronunciation of “tayte” has gained semi-acceptance. Also commonly spelled with all capital letters (“TATE”), though it is not an acronym.

There are two incorrect “origins” of the word which are commonly heard: one states that “tate” simply comes from the English word “rotate,” and the other states that the word comes from the Japanese verb “tateru,” which means “to stand.” Both are false.

Awesome. Thanks.

Wow - I was told it was short for "rotate".

I knew I was right!

Anyone know if the PCB has a chatter free option? Not that it bugs me that much, it seems to be just a little window that pops up in the corner on there at least (rather than perpetual giant heads).

...not that I have the PCB, tempted to get it down the line though after not buying a game in years. Thinking about selling DOJ to fund it partially, apparently it's holding value well cause you can ROM swap it to the Black Label version nowadays. I like DOJ well enough but not all that much, hoping I'll like SDOJ more.

The chatter is exclusive to the 360 mode, so, no, it isn't on the PCB.

Which brings an interesting question I have. Did the tate option begin with the Saturn or are there earlier examples? I know it was common to reformat for games like Phelios and stuff. What was the first home game to ever feature the option?

My gut reaction to this was "there's probably some early Japanese PC game on the X68000 or something that did it".

Magic Knight on shmups says:

Dragon Spirit on the X68000 has a Tate mode. It was released in 1988.

Ginga Force / Eschatos double pack inbound:

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/05/0...rs-ginga-force-and-eschatos-bundled-together/

On an unrelated note, has anyone gotten their Sturmwind yet? I have it ordered through NCSX and they have yet to receive their copies.

Oh wow that looks really cool. I like the way Eschatos is presented with its cool 3d background and uses of perspective as you play. Does is still come with the two wonderswan games that were packaged on the Eschatos 360 solo release in this bundle too?

Comes with them all. The Wonderswan games are baked into the menus of Eschatos. I'm curious what it says about the CD on the cover...if it is the one that came with the original Eschatos release, or a mix of both games, or a remix of some sorts.

No Wonderwitch on the cover :-(

Thanks for that news.

I was contemplating getting Ginga Force, and I don't have Eschatos. The choice is simple now.

I don't know about the looks, but comparing the sound is like night and day. I used to have the PS1 version of the game and the sound seemed "muffled" a bit. From the videos I've seen/heard, Saturn version sounds a heck of a lot better.

Well, here's my POV on that, or rather, how I came to this opinion.......

I had the original Saturn release within the first week of release (this was...1997?), but didn't put much time into it because I was busy at the time, so I didn't really play much of the game until the PS1 version came out in the US (in 1998?). I bought into the whole 'special edition' style marketing for the game, all the extras it had over the Saturn original, claims of less slowdown, and so that was the version I played to death. It wasn't until years later when I was reading discussions about the Saturn version being better looking, that I finally dusted off that version and played it.

WOW. That's all I can say. Other than the transparency effects in the jungle stage (Stage 2?), the Saturn version looks much much better. I also don't see the slowdown people speak of.

Contrast to what you're saying about the sound......you're not the first person I've heard make mention of the Saturn version sounding better, and I wouldn't be surprised if I find it does if I were to compare in the same way. It should though, the Saturn TFV uses Red Book CD audio, and the PS1 uses its compressed format.

Nope. Nothing.

I made the awful mistake of ordering Sturmwind directly from Redspot games - paid extra for tracking and the tracking code doesn't work. RSG isn't responding to anyone's emails about shipping and it's apparently wide spread.

Worst customer service ever.

Ginga was only released in Feb, no platinum version in sight, so this obvious cashgrab seems to suggest Qute is struggling financially.

Well, this is kinda like two platinums together. Why it has the Wonder Price label. But I agree, it does seem rather quick.

I guess this is the appropriate thread?

The 14th main Touhou game, Touhou Kishinjou ~ Double Dealing Character, has been announced, with the usual three-stage demo to be sold at Reitaisai on May 26.

http://kourindou.exblog.jp/20469044/

Details from MotK:
- theme is "neither novel or retro, an ageless neo-retro danmaku shooter"
- Reimu, Marisa, and Sakuya are the PCs
- the graphics resolution has been doubled and the game is no longer resolution-dependent, so "if you own a respectable computer, you should be able to play at 1280x960"

Slight mistranslation - ゼロ年代 refers to the 2000's, not "ageless". So that's what ZUN is referring to with the whole not-new not-retro thing. He's making a 2000's themed shmup of some kind.

Actually, I'm pretty sure he said something similar while making MoF. He wanted to go "back to basics".

Not my fault, that's how MotK translated it when I posted. They've fixed it since then as well. Don't shoot the messenger.

Additional Caladrius DLC characters will be released on 5/15, 560MSP each.

Yay for the shop girl, but not really digging the cracked out Lilith.

Oh yeah!

I'll be getting the Shop Girl. She is cool with her little medicine vials on her necklace and cleavage.

Wonder if we will get a few more achievements per character. Shyness Break!

Amiami has the Ginga Force & Eschatos WONDER PACK for preorder. Can anyone confirm its region-freeness yet?

Qute's stuff has been 100% region-free. Time and again, most if not all platinum releases of J-shooters on the 360 have retained their identical region status. Not going to say order with abandon...but I'm pretty sure you are safe.

Are the DotEmu packs MAME based? I have to wonder, given that MAME does the RFA games and not Raiden II. You'd think there would be some indication if they were, though, and the Irem pack certainly didn't seem like MAME.

Might be a long shot but does anybody know of a source on the web to get digital files of shooter movestrips?

I found this site from a user at shmups but they are designed for the Egret's bigger space and I'm looking for Astro size. He gives instructions on cropping and editing but I don't have photoshop.

Looking for a Battle Garegga strip file that I could take and print out.

I have just installed Raiden Legacy. Bought it from GoG.

I'll let you guys know. LOVE the 360 conversion.

PC gaming "master race," amirite?

Thanks for reminding me. I hope the controller support is better than the IREM collection. I've been banging my head against trying to get my HRAP VX woring properly with the thing. No native support, and Joy2key is also failing me. Any other good joystick emulators out there I can try?

I'm playing on my work computer and it feels like the game isn't emulating slowdown at all. the FPS is pretty high but it's not locked either, there's tearing and i don't remember this much shadow flicker in the 360 version.

Tearing is probably causing the shadow flickering to be more noticeable. It's a better option than input lag, which, on a modern Windows emulation pack like this, is easily the most likely alternative. The lack of slowdown emulation sounds like a problem though.

It's important to remember that these games initially updated at a super weird 55hz and that can't be changed without compromises (screen tearing, input lag) or reworking the entire game.

Sounds crazy, but you might have good results making a custom 55hz resolution and running it at that.
