For what it's worth, it is pretty easy to watch 3D movies in 2D. You just have to rotate one of the lenses 90 degrees (or buy glasses so made). That way, you get the big screen without the annoyance of depth.

They're similar situations, but one universe has an in-canon explanation for how coincidences work (Will of the Force) and the other one addresses its coincidences through a handwave in an interview with the writers.

They aren't comparable.

Hobus isn't Romulus' Star, it's 500 light years away. Though that begs the question that if Hobus exploded, they should have at least 500 years to deal with it.

The in canon explanation is pure technobabble:

In 2387, the Hobus star exploded in a supernova which threatened the galaxy. The first indications of the disaster were observed on Stardate 64333.4 by the crew of the Romulan Mining Guild ship Narada, who were mining the first planet in the Hobus system for the rare mineral decalithium. Wild fluctuations in Hobus’ radiation output forced the Narada to abandon a mining operation and evacuate the area at warp. The star erupted, destroying the planet. Ambassador Spock warned the Romulan senate that the imminent supernova would be “unlike any the galaxy has ever seen” and that the star had converted the planet’s mass into energy, increasing its own power. (Countdown) 27 hours after stardate 64444.5, the Hobus star exploded, the effects propagating through subspace at multiwarp speeds, destroying the planets Romulus and Remus.

I didn't know what Hobus was, so I looked it up. Oh...so the plot even makes even less sense when you read the Countdown comics. haha.

Orci said their theory of time travel is the timeline is self-correcting, the universe itself tries to fix timeline anomalies which is why Kirk and Spock were able to meet.
 
Just got back. Enjoyable and pretty but rather predictable. I preferred the 2009 movie out of the two Abrams movies.

I'll spoiler the rest of this post. Won't say anything specific but Trek fans will probably know what I'm getting at.

Way too much of it was lifted from other Trek movies, to the point where emotional scenes came off like parodies. I know Hollywood's short on new ideas but good lord.

Except that it isn't a handwave. Kirk's pod specifically tells him there is a Starfleet outpost 14 clicks from his location. Spock Prime also mentions the outpost. Yes it's a coincidence that Kirk wanders into the cave and finds Spock Prime, but it's not nearly as big a coincidence as some people are making. They both happened to wander into the same shelter on the way to the Starfleet outpost.

And Luke magically wandering into Yoda is a contrivance. Saying 'force did it', doesn't make it less of a narrative convenience, it just emphasizes the force itself as a narrative convenience.

I just got back as well and this kind of mirror's my feelings. I had a good time with it though.
 
I'm a long running Trek fan and found his first Star Trek film to be enjoyable, yet at the same time somewhat offensive to the franchise. I haven't seen this yet (will this weekend) but I'm expecting more of the same. I'll "like" it but I won't really like it. lol
 
sitting at 90% currently at rt.

can't wait for the first real good summer blockbuster. next week can't come soon enough.
 
Being a critic of the first film, I can categorically say this sequel is better in every way and, crucially, it has just enough to satisfy the Star Trek fans in terms of canon.

I will say though, however, the Chekov and Scotty accents were painfully amateur; people in the audience often giggled when they spoke.
 
That was fucking ace. Only thing I didn't like was Spock
shouting Khan's name
but bar that, fucking fantastic film.

If you're a Star Trek fan it's easy enough to guess where it's going but that doesn't detract from what is a great blockbuster film.

I think the laughs from Scotty and Chekov are intended. They're hilarious. Chekov's accent has been made a running joke since Abrams' first film 'Vwwveeector victor!'

That joke was meant to be the computer not recognising the heavy Russian accent. The laughs I heard were at his attempt at the Russian accent, when it wasn't a comic scene.

Also, ironically, even though Uhura and Spock are in a relationship, the undeniable love story in this film is between Spock and Kirk! Manly tears were shed tonight

Good. Film deserves it. Perhaps the best popcorn film since Avatar. Certainly the best one since John Carter.

The Kronos/Qo'noS debacle is easy to explain. Norway isn't called Norge in English as it is in Norwegian, for example. Qo'noS is simply Kronos in Klingon(ese).

The transwarp technology is also not surprising, as it's technology Spock Prime "designs" from 120 years into the future. They are skipping a century of transporter technology in this universe, basically.

Re-watched the movie today. Still loved it and still found the
death scene extremely sad. Though they should have been ballsy with what happens.

Must say I paid more attention to the music this time. The piano music that plays during a particular scene and the credits is lovely!
 
Can anyone find me interviews of the cast and JJ talking about Benedict, preferably if they reference his Sherlock work?

Also, have any of the cast or JJ spoken about the themes of TV series other than ToS?
 
Just came back from ze moviez.

It's a supercharged version of the first Abrams Star Trek, whether that's good or bad depends entirely upon you. If you thought this was gonna at least attempt to be a bit more introspective or have a remotely science fiction element to it then you're shit out of luck. This is a full-on action movie with its foot stuck into the pedal for nearly the entire runtime. Personally, JJ's whizbang style of constantly shaking, moving, twisting and manipulating the camera in every way possible at every time possible was a little tiring. This movie is just restless. It seems to have taken a clue from the AAA video game design book. Just go bigger, badder, crazier. As such the times where the film actually attempts to slow down and have a heartfelt moment fell sort of flat for me. I'm not sure I actually cared about what was going on in the movie.

I'd say it's still a fun movie if you can endure another vapid Hollywood blockbuster. Your eyes will be entertained, but surely our brains will turn to mush eventually from this crap.

Oh I watched it in 3D, the most impressive post conversion I've seen. Lots of depth in the picture at all times, but it really doesn't improve the movie at all.

Do they even have transporters that good in any other Star Trek media? It kind of renders starships redundant.

Just saw it, and really really enjoyed it. Felt a lot more like Trek than the first movie, thanks to the endless references to previous movies and TV (some subtle, some that beat you over the head).

So glad I stayed spoiler free too,
I never expected to see old Spock, and the Klingons... finally. And how cool was it seeing the Phoenix and NX starship models in Marcus' office?

Can't wait to see it again.
 
Watched it last night in 2D, this has had to be my favourite sci fi in a good while. Absolutely loved the world, the design, the story and the villain.

I think it may have been my favourite movie of this year. I enjoyed avengers but this was something else. I eagerly await the next star trek film by Abrams as well as the star wars film if he is involved.

It needs to be Wednesday already, I can't wait! Opening night/first show crowds are usually awesome in my experience at the true IMAX I'm going to, so it should be fantastic. Can't wait to see that giant screen lite up during the IMAX footage. It was really awe inspiring when it happened during TDK/TDKR, cant wait to see it in 3D now.
 
This movie kicked so much ass! I seriously doubt superman will be anywhere near as good, and it destroyed iron man 3 (and I liked iron man 3). I know virtually nothing about Star Trek. Just an awesome sci-fi action movie.
 
Saw it an really enjoyed it, just feels like they took the first film and really amped it up but it works. Would have liked some more space battle but can't really complain. I think I will see it again
 
Just watched at IMAX here in Sydney. Predictable at times but superbly done, gorgeous looking and enjoyable. Cumberbatch and Quinto stole the movie!

It's not all that uncommon to use one with with wildly different meanings in Trek. Transwarp was also what the Excelsior used in ST3, many decades before it became Infinispeed™, wasn't it? And Trilithium was the gunk they were cleaning out of the Enterprise with the deathbeams in that episode where Picard had to save the ship from terrorists years before it was a magic substance that killed stars.
