Steam Trading Cards : get trading cards and turn it into stuff

You stopped playing TF2 because they added a bunch of free stuff?

Okay.

No, it's because it became about the free stuff, free stuff which dropped randomly, the rate at which it dropped having no bearing on skill or style of play, and the economy of hats that grew up around it. Honestly, it was the crates and keys that stopped me from playing. Hats were fine, but having to pay money to have a chance at getting a super sekret shiny foil hat was flat-out retarded to me. Purely cosmetic or no, it felt cheap that I couldn't get a key from a drop or something. Add that to just not having the kind of playstyle where I could comfortably play as all the classes as needed, the Demoman turning into a swordsman, and no doctor ever supporting me as a heavy, I wasn't having fun, so I stopped playing.

I mean, I didn't have a problem with just not playing. I know why people have fun with it and encourage people to do so, but the thing is, I could not play TF2 and therefore not have to deal with all the silliness around it. With this, I'm faced with it every time I open a chat window. This meta-game isn't something I give a shit about, and while I don't have to participate with it, it's participating with me, and that's damn annoying and not what I use steam for. That make sense? I mean, I'll play along with what I do have, but I have never, EVER bought a game for the stupid meta shit I get, in another game or outside of the game altogether, and I don't plan on starting now.

Drop rate seems pretty low in CS GO. Have played it for over 30 minutes and haven't gotten a single card.

I have gotten all drops from Half Life 2 and Portal 2. I have made 11.89€ selling card related stuff.

Where do I see my cards? I left HL2 on idling overnight, but I don't see any cards in my inventory. Or is it because I left it in the main menu?

I got one HL2 card for idling in the main menu, but they might have changed the code during the night because the first one dropped after 20 minutes, and the other 4 didnt drop at all. Trying ingame now.

And the cards are in the inventory.

Edit: Yep, ingame worked now.

Invite prices are still rising. Last night an invite cost .10€, this morning it cost 1.30€, not it costs 3.20€. Wonder how high the price will rise before crash...

It's amazing how I missed out on nearly $7 when selling my invites, but still have about $17 off these cards. It's too bad Dota isn't dropping for me yet.

I just got them to drop again, lol. I had about 7 invite keys left that I sold for 3,50. People saw that I was dropping the keys and panicked, now its back to 2,50. Ahh, good old stock market.

Sold all of mine at least.

Just bought a few cheap ones after the dip, they'll surely climb in price again, right? Right guys?

Yeah, probably. Although it seems we havent reached the bottom yet of how low it should go for now.

Is it worth buying a key, or best to just wait for one? Asking out of a gaming viewpoint.

gaming? For gaming those keys dont matter. Just wait till you get in for free.

This is cool. Gabe talked about "rewarding" valuable customers for, what, two years? Was not expecting this. When I first saw it, I was a little grossed out. Gashapon and Cow Clickers sprung to mind. In a couple hours (including organic play in two games I play near-daily anyway in TF2 and Dota 2) I now have some cool little tchotchkes tied to my account and just about enough money in my Steam Wallet to get me through the next big sale. Not bad. : )

Should try competitive TF2. With the strict unlock policy there is no demoknight bullshit.

The lack of dissent to this new thing is troubling. Shit like this is why I stopped playing TF2, so now you're going to have people buying games JUST for the achievements, cards, and xp to expand their epeen profile. This doesn't bother anyone else?

No, why should it?

No, why should it?

Maybe too many people dont really focus on the game itself, but on the things that surround the games.

I stopped playing TF2, since all the hat-community and right now I am just on an idle server and get some messages about my hats, friend-invites and things like that. It is kinda annoying to turn all of these down.

I think it could destroy the communities of some games.

But again my question. What is the best way to make some money right now? I saw Salsa got 24$ just by doing something with all the cards and such. How to monetize the best right now? :D

Broke even so far getting 5 badges, and still have some leftover emoticons and wallpaper to sell. In the future though, I'll probably mainly focus on getting indie game badges and leveling them up, as the developers get a 10% cut of the proceeds.

Well, no, that really doesn't. I don't have much interest in the meta game myself and I just don't participate in it (although I consider it a good thing). It's not like it influences your actual gameplay too much. Plus it gave me some extra money I got off selling some pre-order items on the community market.

Don't Starve and Counter-Strike: GO is not showing up for me on my badge page. These are the two games that I used up all the drops for.
Same thing happened to me. When I sold all my cards the games disappeared from my badges page.

I also don't have a Steam inventory anymore(Only the TF2, Portal 2, and Spiral Knights inventories are showing up).

No, why should it?

Now that I've cooled down from the hype, here's why (and I'm not upset and saying "don't like it don't use it" isn't a valid response to criticism)

1) User level - Maybe they'll have a way to turn this off, but user level is everywhere - your friends are sorted on the profile by their user level, you see their user level when you mouse over them in friend view, it will show up prominently in chat

2) Backgrounds, emoticons - If they add a standard set of backgrounds and emoticons for everyone to use, then I have no problem with having to unlock special game-specific ones, but right now it's just dumb, especially because of how you unlock them

3) Badges and cards - aside from specific sales, the way to get badges is to collect a set of cards. You can only collect half of the types of cards you need (I assume it will reset drops weekly), so you need to sell and buy or find people to trade the other cards with. Now, if you don't want to wait a week, no problem - just buy a TF2 or Dota2 item and reset your drop rate! Doesn't this remind you of the worst aspects of facebook and iPhone games?

e: Also the way to get cards is really dumb - just idle. At least with TF2 and Dota2 and CSGO you're playing it weekly, but with Half Life 2 people are just going to idle for however long it takes to get the cards every time the drop count resets

Looks pretty interesting.

I have a -75% off Total War Shogun 2 if anyone wants to trade for an invite.

Steam Profile ID is the same as my username.

I agree with you on the last two points. Seems like Steam is more for creating a massive backlog and now just idling in games rather than playing them.

Is there some kind of limit for the drops? I mean after like 5 drops, you need to wait for a few hours?

I got exactly 5 cards and I played CS:Go now for about an hour and didnt get any more cards. And I really played it online.

In your badges page, if you look at each category (game) somewhere top right of the box it should say something like

X amount of drops remaining

Not sure if it resets, I don't think it does :/

I think you're only supposed to get three drops max from CS:GO, actually. Some people think there will be a weekly reset a la TF2 drops, but Valve wants to make money off of this so I think once you've received the maximum amount of drops from a game (which you can see in your Badge collection), then that's that and you'll need to trade for or buy the rest.

Yeah. I still have 2 drops from CS:Go left.

Just strange that it takes kinda long, since in TF2 I got the cards like every 25 minutes and now in CS:Go I got one during my first match but since then no card showed up.

Yeah, CS GO drops take longer than other. I've been waiting my last drop for over an hour now.
