Steam Trading Cards : get trading cards and turn it into stuff

Yeah, but selling them so low isn't fun, which is what I'm here for.

What if they become some kind of stupid bubble item? What if there will be technical difficulties and they will become super rare?

What if, man.

True. Hope and fun are worth more than 2 cents.

Your chance of getting foil cards get higher when you're level 10 or more.

Lol :|

So looking at my profile, I needed to complete 3 of the 5 games (provided that I never craft a badge to get a chance for another 100xp); because I have another 700xp from uhh, those other badge requirements.

Looks like level 10 isn't achievable unless you're spending money to buy missing cards or people are just trading them to you for free/or something else.

Can't even buy cards from the market as I just introduced a new payment method for steam... was going to snipe some cheap cards.

Let's assume you start at level 10 (which most people probably don't, I think you need almost a full set of previous badges)

Each level from 10 to 20 takes 200xp
Leveling up a badge gives 100xp and takes a full set of cards

So to get to level 20 where you get your first real benefit (an extra Showcase), you need to level up 20 badges

Probably not a good idea. Beta invites are being given out by the ten-thousands, meaning that cards are going to become rapidly more common, and thus less valuable.

That doesn't answer my question or explain your bitter cynicism.

Realism is often confused with cynicism. This is also a good response/addendum to my concerns:

My criticism is that the whole new profile system seems designed to exploit people's desire to level up and get cards rather than provide usability for everyone

What would have once been a $50 or $60 game that got you lots of customization items and neat rewards for things like winning matches is now a F2P game that requires you to spend hundreds of dollars to get the same customization items, always with the excuse that it's not integral to gameplay, nor do you have to participate, yet for some crazy reason people do want to participate.

They're holding aestheticism and personalization hostage because they know people care, and they know people will pay for it.

I was going for very low prices in the hope that someone might not check the trade value of items, it happens.

Can't even sell my excess SWAT card, grr.

Almost all of the customization items in TF2 and Dota 2 drop for you over time, too. You can also trade. TF2 and Dota 2 are also totally complete games. Give concrete examples of what you're talking about, not just pessimistic hypotheticals.

I'm not sure why you're bothering to reply to him, you can tell from his post that he hasn't bothered to try it.

Weeping for my life savings.

Look at Portal 2. They released something like $800 dollars worth of DLC on launch day, and no one bought it because they couldn't show off their shiny trinkets to anyone.

You said it yourself:

This is a new thing for people that have compulsion and completion problems

I'm agreeing with you. The thing I'm saying is that every time one of these schemes works, is one more step in a scary direction. Call it a slippery slope if you like, I'm just sharing my opinion. It could certainly be wrong.

I'm not a particularly big fan of MOBA games. I played DOTA for a year or so back during the WCIII days, and had my fill of it. I've played quite a lot of TF2.

Well that's fine, there's many genres I'm not a fan of. I just think it's a bit ridiculous to make sweeping generalisations about games that you haven't played.

Valve free to play games are great because most of the customisation items are available without paying, and you have the option to pay for sparklier versions of those items if you want.

I don't understand how someone can complain about items that don't affect their gameplay when they get to play awesome games for free.

edit: never mind,,,

I need to trade something with someone. I have one invite, bioshock and resident evil 5. If someone want something my ID is renatocustodio.

I had enough previous badges to start at level 11. By leveling up the Pillar of the Community badge by making some token posts and likes I got to level 12. All without playing a game since this launched.

so i got the invite.

loaded it then proceeded to uninstall cause I thought something was wrong.
Game is not in library but i got 4 dota drops......wtf is this

The FAQ got updated:

What about free to play games like Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2?

Free to play games drop game cards based on your in-game purchasing history. If you've made purchases in-game prior to the Steam Trading Card Beta, or if you purchased TF2 prior to the Free to Play Update, you'll have 4 or 5 drops available for these games. You'll receive more card drops when you buy items in game, approximately one card drop for every $9 USD spent.

Fucking :lol

You still get drops though even if you dont buy stuff though right?

Just less. Seems about right.

It seems you get them once, and that's it.

so HL2, Don't Starve and CS:GO = 4/5 cards per player, and you're done.

Going by this assumption, is it safe to say that the cards prices are going to skyrocket as I mentioned earlier? Especially the ones for the non-F2P games since you can only get more cards by rebuying the game?

Hell, if Valve thinks one card is worth $9, I sure as shit hope their market price hits that number. I'd love to sell 4-5 cards per games at that price.

I meant using them in chat.

I see. I didn't see the emoticon button on my chat window but thought it might be because I haven't unlocked any yet.

I believe the button in the chat window is only in the Steam Beta version (you can opt-in under settings). Ie. I can see the button in my chat windows and have the beta client.
It was what actually first alerted me that I got my invite into the Steam Cards beta. That button just popped in my chat window out of nowhere.

I think the biggest thing I don't like about this is dropping half the set of cards, which seems to follow the logic that most people aren't going to bother collecting the other half, but the people that do would be very willing to spend money on them, which is straight out of mobile f2p game design

I was playing Portal 2 and received the first card, and also noticed that only 3 drops remain in the badge invetory of the game. How can I reset number of drops. I'm lvl 8.

If you've made purchases in-game prior to the Steam Trading Card Beta

So...

I'm guessing this applies to DOTA2, too, of... want to get cards from that buy buying in game? Fuck you... wait for some time. We won't tell you when.

Never.
