I think it's a little of both delusion and spite. Delusion that the Wii U could actually sell so terribly that $400+ consoles will sell significantly better than one with Mario and coming off the heels of the Wii. Spite because they just don't want to be proven wrong by those folks who have said from day one that the Wii U will fail.
The problem is markets (at least how I see it). Sony and Microsoft know exactly who to target and how to target them. Nintendo hasn't figured that out yet. The Wii U is like an amoeba floating in a pool aimlessly without any kind of direction what so ever. It isn't as though the Wii U couldn't have performed better than it has now, but I really honestly and truly believe Nintendo's approach to marketing this system cost them dearly. They, allegedly, made a calculated to push this hardware out early so as to get it into the market sooner, and are paying for it. There are many different "what if" scenario's one could go into but the situation is what it is. Right now the thing Nintendo needs to do is clearly define what they are going to be doing for the next twelve months. Right now they need to secure their own base, and then start working on bringing the rest in.
Ultimately I don't think there will be any changes until next year after Iwata resigns.
