Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have adopted electronics and an integrated systems-on-a -chip (soc) architecture that unleashes magnitudes more compute and graphics power than the current generation of consoles. These architectures are a generation ahead of the highest end PC on the market and their unique design of the hardware, the underlying operating system and the live service layer create one of the most compelling platforms to reimagine game mechanics.

Our benchmarks on just the video and audio performance are 8-10 times superior to the current gen. The compute capabilities of these platforms and the data transfer speeds we can now bank on, essentially removes any notion of rationing of systems resources for our game engines

In terms of the amount of (GDDR5) ram, PS4 definetly is a generation ahead of the highest end GPU.

edit: forgot to mention amount

How many polygons can the gddr5s make?

Companies should really stop making statements like these, honestly. Including video card manufacturers. It's disingenuous at best, completely dishonest at worst.

All high-end PC GPUs use GDDR5 VRAM.

RAM doesn't make computations, just so you know. CPUs and GPUs do that, and the top-end PC CPUs and GPUs right now demolish what the Xbone and PS4 have inside of them.

I think he means overall architecture elegance.

Unified memory, HSA, dedicated units for video/audio, Compute setup etc.

On PC's you have to constantly copy data between Video memory and System memory, huge buffers to accommodate the modular nature etc.

I recommend everyone to read Mark Cerny's breakdown of the PS4: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/191007/inside_the_playstation_4_with_mark_.php

In the preceding sentence he's talking about compute and graphics power, so that's the context under which he made the statement.

It's also funny to have EA say this while Microsoft, by their own admission, talk about not pushing the hardware envelope this time around.

Really...are they a generation ahead of the workstation you used to render all your game footage, even?

Don't you see they have PS5 + XBox Two Electric Boogaloo as their workstations, they're just down-porting from them

They are so far ahead of the game(s), the game(s) comes to them
(Yeah that sounded stupid when I wrote it =/)

PS4 & One architecture 'a generation ahead of the highest end PC' would be a much better thread title.

Agreed. He's right, since with consoles you can code to the metal and make things far far more efficient than any PC could dream of achieving. PC requires brute force hardware to output great graphics. Consoles can rely on their architecture.

This explains why Ignite engine won't be available for FIFA 14 PC. Too weak to catch up with dem consoles.

I can see his point in that technologically they are a generation ahead, ie everything on the same SoC and the PS3 having 8 gbs of gddr but current PC tech can make that up in terms of sheer power and numbers.

"of the highest end PC"

This is ridiculous. I know EA has games on these two platforms so they must talk it up, but straight up comparing them to the literal best PC made today is nuts.

"Our benchmarks on just the video and audio performance are 8-10 times superior to the current gen."

This data point doesn't fit with what he is saying -- the video performance of "the highest end PC" is > 30x superior to current-gen consoles.

What does that mean though?

What generation are current PC's at right now? Generation 20XX?

Well with the 700GTX series out soon, AMD's 7XXX series out now and i7's worming their way into PC's, it looks like we're on the 7th generation. This is the 8th generation of consoles. EA is right guys.

May as well pack up our PC's and go home.

So does that mean that the NES is a generation ahead of current PC's?

Maybe they borrowed Digital Foundry's PCs? :S

The worst thing of all, that there are people out there who are going to belive these outlandish and hypocrite claims, I deeply pity them.

Isn't saying that the architecture is a generation ahead of PCs kind of making a false assumption that this is the direction PCs are headed?

HSA and unified memory is not something I should imagine gaming PCs are ever going to want or need. Those are technologies used in mobile devices... inherently less powerful than PCs... technologies specifically designed to be less powerful than PC technology.

Good to see the audio performance is so fantastic though. I bet it's like having sex with my ear and leaving a messy creampie.

Either way the statement is rhetorical and likely to be proven nonsense.

If we assume he means architecture, and by generation he means GPU generation (yearly refresh cycle), then we could extract a statement that might be true. These machines are almost certainly using advanced designs that we won't see until the 2013 series GPUs start coming out this year.
