EA's CTO : PS4 & One architecturally 'a generation ahead of the highest end PC'

I wonder how EA are developing next-gen games. Are they running their level editors on the consoles? I mean, clearly no other hardware exists that could handle it.

"Our benchmarks on just the video and audio performance are 8-10 times superior to the current gen."

This data point doesn't fit with what he is saying -- the video performance of "the highest end PC" is > 30x superior to current-gen consoles.
Maybe he speaks of current gen consoles.

Agreed. He's right, since with consoles you can code to the metal and make things far far more efficient than any PC could dream of achieving. PC requires brute force hardware to output great graphics. Consoles can rely on their architecture.

So with metal coding, will Battlefield 4 be able to run better on PS4 than on PC? These are important questions.

Maybe he speaks of current gen consoles.

He says 8-10x perf of current gen, which presumably means PS3/XBOX360 generation consoles, not current generation video cards. Unless he's trying to say that these SoC GPUs pulling sub 150W are 10x more powerful than the Titan.

But then earlier he's talking about the highest end PCs. Dude needs to disambiguate.

Talking in architecture and he is right.
Talking in raw performance he is so wrong.

Doesn't 3D ram have like high bandwidth i could see releasing that on the consumer market could force new motherboard and gpu designs.

Motherboard houses 16GB 3D ram the gpu and cpu can access.. While GPU have a big scratchpad like the XBone for a big cache(dat nvidia volta) like performance.

But then again what do i know about hardware

Apparently he's talking about the "architecture" of these systems, not their performace. Not that this would stop news sites from slapping on a misleading headline to get more clicks, of course. The performance numbers he's quoting (8-10x) are more or less in line with the expected performace of the PS4 and the Xbox One based on their hardware. And of course they are much, much lower than a current high-end PC.

Im not sure about the Xbone, but the PS4 with dat 8GB GDDR is certainly ahead.

Actually the "highest end PCs" are rocking a GeForce Titan. It has 6GB GDDR5 memory, which puts it about on par with what you might expect a PS4 game to have available for video use, assuming 1GB is reserved for OS and 1GB is used for CPU stuff. But you also have to consider that memory is only one factor, and you don't have to go as ludicrously high end as a $1000 video card to find things that smoke the GPUs in the PS4, regardless of which one is technically "more advanced" in architecture terms.

There is nothing wrong in this quote. Architecture is next-gen [virtual memory like Maxwell, HSA, APU design], not current gen.

The PS4 vs. PC threads were nuts, if we're gonna start getting Xbone vs. PC threads, it'll push me off the edge.

Such a ridiculous notion.

That doesn't even make sense. How are you even creating those games then?

And Battlefield 4 doesn't look all that impressive honestly.

EA's chief technology officer folks. You'd think you would need some basic knowledge of technology to acquire such a position.

I wish they'd admit that the consoles aren't as powerful as PC.

I don't care whether or not they are, and I don't think most other console gamers do either, otherwise they'd be PC gamers.

Consoles offer benefits over PC gaming (though that is becoming less and less apparent as they become more and more like locked-down, less-capable PCs) and power is not one of them.

Actually, if you have some kind of work experience in a corporate setting you'd never think that.

I wish I had this man's photo and the time to make a memento don't believe his lies .jpg.

That's exactly why Next-gen console games are built on current high-end PC's !

You should be ashamed Mr EA's chief technology officer !

am I the only one who read ops's name as 'salty' and it's quite ironic given the thread lol.

Anyway I don't get the CTO's statement? Does he mean architecture wise? Because even then he would be wrong.

so basically same as this gen, omg these consoles are so powerfull. no pc ports for 3 years now. 3 years later holy fuck peter moore i just discovered the pc market its so much more powerfull than these consoles

In terms of the amount of (GDDR5) ram, PS4 definetly is a generation ahead of the highest end GPU.

edit: forgot to mention amount

In virtually every other way, a modern desktop GPU will outperform the GPU in the PS4/XB1. I could get a laptop with a decent mobile graphics card with 2Gb of VRAM, but my 560TI with only 1Gb would leave it in the dust.

Edit: If this was an elaborate piece of satire aimed at the hype based around the PS4's RAM, well played.

From now on, all developers will do all of their game-development and asset-development work on the most powerful computers available: the PS4 and the One!

"We need to make a One game."
"But how? We have no computers powerful enough to develop for the One!"
"We can use the One!"
"Genius!"

I think he means overall architecture elegance.

Unified memory, HSA, dedicated units for video/audio, Compute setup etc.

On PC's you have to constantly copy data between Video memory and System memory, huge buffers to accommodate the modular nature etc.

I recommend everyone to read Mark Cerny's breakdown of the PS4: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/191007/inside_the_playstation_4_with_mark_.php
Yeah, I'm with this. The OP article clearly states architecture not GPU level of maddness as some clearly believe.

This is another developer spouting off crap without presenting hard numbers. This is another one of those threads that just needs to disappear before tempers start flaring.

Actually, if you have some kind of work experience in a corporate setting you'd never think that.
You don't really need to go as far as to have corporate work experience, just follow politics for a while.

If they just had said the consoles where ahead of PC's that would be fine, because I'm sure the PS4 or XBO is on par or better than my gaming PC. But better than those water-cooled supercomputers with overclocked titans? Nope.

Ziltoid the Omniscient speaks volumes of truth.

This EA statement is pretty... well... yeah...

Didnt they pre-render their engine footage on a PC?
HA!

There is no way this guy is right. the amd cpus get trounced by intel. A medium range dell at $1099 has a faster processor, more ram, and more storage space then a ps4 would have.

If you build your own you can even have better performance then that.

Also when the ps4 releases haswell should be out which will be even faster.

This is what this dude meant. Even highest end PC does not have HSA or Unified memory. Not all world lives by flop power alone.

That doesn't mean consoles are better than highend PCs they just have newer architecture.

When I start seeing games like KZ running 60fps then I might be impressed. If BF4 on the next gen consoles is stuck at only 30fps then that's a disappointment period.

Hey guys, I think EA wants you to buy your games for the consoles instead of PC. 8)

They've always come across as fair-weather fans of the PC platform. Their efforts with Origin seemed like a late-generation push before the new round of consoles showed up.

Oh noes, my 3960x with 3x 7970's can't keep up, maybe I should upgrade to a new console.

getting them both anyway lol
