Remember how region locking on the PS3 was a publisher decision?

Would MS allow it's competitor to not have it at the system level if it's doing it? Would MS force publishers to restrict used games on both systems otherwise those publishers are not allowed to publish on the MS platform?

I have a feeling EA will do something like that but other publishers won't. At least nothing much more than online passes. Acti doesn't even do online passes. Can't remember if Ubi does.

It'd hard for me to believe Sony would make it system level. It would kill them in Japan. There's no ifs, ands or buts about it. It would be game over before that system even hits shelves. They'd give Japan to Nintendo and many smaller publishers and devs would move over to them.

I'd prefer that they say no used game blocking at all, but that seems unlikely. As long as they don't make it at system level then I don't think too many people will be scared. I question how many publishers will even back a policy given how vicious the negativity is toward this practice.

Ok, question to insiders and gamers of SonyGaf, is there a possibility of Sony having online play behind a pay wall? It doesn't make sense to the game but it is a viable financial route for the company. Any inside info regarding what Sony is doing. I am surprised few journalists are asking Sony this crucial question.

Yeah, being a Japanese company I don't see this happening. Yoshida's first answer made it seem like it was pretty clear that it isn't something system wide, but his "clarification" later on seemed like something so that it wouldn't hurt publisher relations. I'm sure Sony wouldn't disallow someone to block used games since they could boycott PS4 if they did, but they won't put something system level in for it.

All the rumors I've heard have just said "some online features" will be behind a paywall. If online play was going to be paid, I think they would have singled it out. I assume streaming, uploading video, Gaikai, etc will be paid but online gaming and access to Youtube, Netflix, browser, etc will remain free.

Potentially it could be linked in with PS+. I doubt it though.

while I agree, Sony would need to have a serious power-play to pull this off.
That respectable middle finger could sink Sony.

Has any console survived without EA support in the past?
Like them or hate them, EA supplies a ton of content through the course of a gen.

EA wouldn't survive without Sony if there would be no money hatting from MS either.

Can't see any way they could justify having free online on Vita, but paid online on PS4.

Yeah, every other console from Sony has had free online play, would be a massive PR nightmare for PS4 to not. PS4 exclusive premium features are much easier to justify.

no indications, no reason to. Since when did MS become the gold standard for everything lol. Online gaming is free on literally every platform IMAGINABLE that is not named xbox. It would be REALLY weird if they joined them and not everyone else. That company got some of you legit shook.

THIS and a used game fee would drive me to go PC exclusive. I just hope online play and apps like Netflix and YouTube are NOT behind a pay wall. And I don't want to pay for the game if I'm loaning it from someone.

Ready for Cernification...whenever

Cernified.

At this point, highly unlikely. When asked Yoshida did dodge it but I think it's because they want it as a big selling point and confirm at E3.

Since PS is going to be push hard by them I don't see online play being included in it.

We will get the same setup up as the PS3 and Vita I think.

Man, I just wish Sony puts in full PSone BC. It's weird that Vita has it but PS4 might not have it.

Or better yet, PSP BC.

I heard it's actually behind a paywall.

I think this would be quite devastating for the PS4. As much good will as they have now, it can all be squandered before launch with enough bad decisions. Sadly though, whatever they'd lose console sales wise they'd easily make back up subscription wise. I really hope they stick with the premium subscription services and not the near-mandatory ones.

Sony will be ridiculed and mocked if there isn't any native PS1 BC. They should be mocked if there isn't any native PS2 BC as well. Even the XBO will have native BC with the OG XB, AFAIK.

Two active systems with free online,it would be pretty hard I think.
I'm not sure you understand. Do you realize the huge infrastructural investment the PS4 represents? I'm not saying they are going to do it, but we might all have to face the reality that putting MP behind a paywall is absolutely without question the most effective (and brutal) means of guaranteeing subscriptions. I would love for Sony not to do so, my respect for their business policies would grow substantially, but I'm not functioning on the assumption that it is going to remain free. What I am counting on is that if it is indeed paid, it comes built in with PS+ or some other service -- at least that way it isn't as egregious as MSFT's bullshit.

Save us, Sony.

Basically this.

Someone should create one of those kickass gifs with this as the theme for E3 usage.

I feel like now more than ever, Sony has a chance to draw a line in the sand and make a stand against this anti consumer bullshit whilst simultaneously delivering on the high quality and quantity (looking at u Nintendo) of games we deserve!

I don't mind paying a subscription if it is PS+ quality. What I'm worried about is the normal subscription being $50, and the Plus subscription (free games and so on) being more than that. I doubt that will happen though.

honestly if Plus stays as good as it is, I don't really care about used games because I'll be sticking to free ones :)

I apologise, but I'm going to preach a little here.

This is a new gen launch. In an industry where we are diversifying way too much, delivering way too little and making it way too hard for people to enjoy gaming for what it is, it is a chance to stop and reset. Above all, it's a chance to show the gaming community what game creators, system designers and industry leaders have learnt since 2005.

For Sony, it is as much a revitalisation of their industry as well as a chance to show it still belongs in this game. Everyone at Sony knows they dropped the ball this gen and many inside have been waiting a long time to rectify that. I spoke to a dev in Frankfurt last month who admitted that almost everything that has gone wrong with his studios games has been a result of trying to force games down strictly defined paths brought on by limited hardware and mostly, really bad ideas. He wants gamers to reconnect, to feel enthusiastic again and he wants Sony to start making fun games once more.

Hyperbole? Maybe. I guess the proof is coming soon. I have seen much to keep me very optimistic. But the chance to reconnect with gamers again will have Sony and MS showing more than just titles for this holiday launch. Everyone remembers 2005 and 2006 E3's as setting up the consoles for this gen. So will this E3 define the start of next gen.

In Sony's case, it's about redemption.

This might be the lamest thing I have ever typed on this board but I almost got chills from that.

If Sony is smart, they will leave multiplayer free, and then all that extra stuff we saw in the announcement behind PS+.

But...we've heard too much good news on the PS4, we're bound to hear some bad news soon...so.....

I'm leaning 55% that multiplayer will be behind paywall...

Also, PSP had perfect PS1 playback, and when the Vita launched, you couldn't even play PS1 games, so.... it's not going to surprise me if PS4 doesn't have PS1 emulation.

I still hope that Denny wasn't bullshitting people with this comment

OPM You talked a lot about service, tech and ideas; how are you going to present PS4 to a more casual market?

Michael Denny So I think two of the other pillars we talked about in-terms of design were simplicity and immediacy. Even taking back a step from here, PlayStation 4 can still be enjoyed old school without an Internet connection at all. So it depends what level you want to use these feature sets at. So with ’simple’ and ’immediacy’ we want it so that everything is one button click away, for example. And ’immediacy’ takes down these barriers that can be frustrating to gamers between the player getting access to the content.

The best example of that is not just the background downloading but being able to play digital content as it’s downloading for example. There are a lot of messages because there are a lot of features but that enriches the whole system. I think it’s the experience of them, when people get their hands on the device, enjoy the experiences, enjoy the seamless interaction of the social side of the play, the personalisation, the idea that we’re going to be able to recommend and give preferential content to people as we go along. I think all these ideas come together in the play experience and how you get to the games.

Because without saying the exact words, he's saying that there is no anti-used game practice because you never need to connect online to play your PS4. I'm listening to the Game Informer podcast and one of them pointed out that they asked a MS exec about owning a Xbox One without and internet connection and he was told "It probably wouldn't be a good idea to do that".

I reckon Sony will do something like multiplayer components of new games are playable two weeks before the release if you have PSN+. Works as a trial and a benefit for PSN+

Why would you hope that? Isn't it a good thing what he's saying? /confused

Well Denny slipped out GT6 for PS3 so i'm guessing he's telling the truth.

Imagine if this happens:

Picture the scene.
Kaz comes on stage, the lights dim, he looks into the camera.
'On going forward with the Playstation 4, we've come to a realization that looking to the past is where success can be found, and in coming to this conclusion, building strong relationships with third parties are important in offering gamers what they want.'
Hashimoto comes on stage, and taps Kaz on the shoulder.
'Today we announce a special partnership with Sony, bringing exclusive titles to the Playstation 4 to help realize our vision for next-generation experiences. But enough talk, please watch.'
Screen lights up
'Final Fantasy'
Crow goes 'ooooh'
'XIV - PS4 edition'
Crowd yells, 'they're pulling this shit again?! Fail SE.'
Trailer ends, screen goes black, and then,
"This is a fantasy based on reality." Shimomura violins cut into the silence and the game blows minds. Trailer ends 'Final Fantasy' and then 'Versus' but then the 'ersus' fades and an 'X' appears before the V.
Crowd 'OMG YES, rumours were true!'
'Coming exclusively to Playstation 4 in 2014' screen goes black
Hashimoto speaks above the crowd's cheering, 'but now, let me invite you to see what we hope to bring further in the future.'
On-screen 'this trailer is running real-time on Playstation 4 hardware.'
Silence, and then, a piano is tickled as 'Dearly Beloved' melts into the crowd and a scene of Sora on a beach in what looks like pre-rendered CG appears, but it's not CG! And every single person in the room is overcome with goosebumps. And there are 6 pages of 'OMG' posted in GAF in the space of 20 seconds.
The short trailer ends with 'Kingdom Hearts 3' 'coming exclusively to Playstation 4'
GAF errors and people are furiously f5ing
screen goes black
And then another trailer starts!
It looks a bit like Agni's Philosophy but there are new environments, new scenes, and it looks phenomenal, and has Azam Ali's hypnotic chanting playing over it. Trailer ends with 'Final Fantasy XVI, coming exclusively to Playstation 4'
tears of joy
hashimoto bows, 'please be excited'/ the end

And with that out of the way, pls lower your expectations :(
