What can Microsoft announce at E3 to turn it around?

see even after all the hate I've spewed on it, if they -

launch at ~300
have 2/3 launch games I want to play

I'll hope on

It's hopeless.

To be honest, the thing that struck me the most was how every presenter on stage seemed to be a "suit". There didn't seem to be a commitment to making this the best entertainment AND gaming machine.

The other thing that I can't wrap my head around is how disconnected they must be from their core audience, when after all the ACCURATE leaks yielded such a response months ago, yet they didn't prepare for it during their conference, NOR the Q&A with reporters. It makes me conflicted; they either don't care, or they are truly disconnected.

Anyway, I'll be watching at E3, but I have several concerns with the box:
1. Privacy Concerns - The thing could be recording/sending data back to MS without my consent.
2. The whole used games debacle - I don't buy used games. But I often pass along my games once I'm done with them. There really seems to be no benefit to such a policy for the consumers. We've gotten to the point of monetizing horse armor, and they want to keep squeezing us even more? I remember the days of Epic providing free content packs. Good old days; gone. It's rather disappointing.
3. There was no assurance of 1080p as requirement for games. Big disappointment if they allow their big games to ship with sub-Full HD resolutions.
4. No mention of how they will improve their Xbox Live services. I wouldn't be surprised if they raised the price, considering the agreements in place with the NFL, and exclusive content (such as the Halo episodes). But hey, they now allow 1000 friends!

Should certainly be interesting to see how it all unfolds. The Xbox has been my favorite console for the past 2 generations, but they have done nothing but disappoint me with their showing thus far.

I expect MS to change a lot of their policies with X1, now that people are starting to talk and the average joe is even understanding the online checks, etc. If they don't, it's almost certain that it's because Sony has quietly decided to go more or less the same route.

If some amazing exclusives are shown and they aren't all just Kinnect bs, I expect opinions to shift quickly. Consumers are incredibly fickle in the game industry.

Let me unplug Kinect. With the video's that I've seen, there's still significant lag and it's completely useless and annoying to me until it's 1:1 or gets close enough so I don't notice anymore.

Until then it's a useless peripheral that for some unknown reason you're shoving down my throat.

For me it's still all about the games. That's why Tuesday was so disappointing, no games that excited me...
If I see the following, and the games look good, all will be ok:

- Exclusive from Black Tusk
- Crackdown 3
- New game from Epic
- New game from Rare
- One big XBLA exclusive
- Respawns new game or Battlefield 4 (with some sort of exclusive DLC)
- UFC game (with some sort of exclusive DLC)

Another big point, at least 20% cheaper than the PS4.

For me personally, it is too late for Microsoft. There is absolutely nothing they can do to turn the X1 around in my eyes. Even if they allow used games w/o a fee, remove the 24-hour online check, and make Kinect optional...so what, no sale from me. The damage is done and it is beyond repair. Their overall vision is clear, and it doesn't appeal to me.

Also, PS4 has done almost everything right so far, and since I prefer to stick to one console + PC for this cycle...the Xbox One will get left out in the cold.

LOL at the posts talking about used games, authentication and kinect back peddling. These things are as likely to change as Apple putting an SD card in the next iPhone

Give every press member in the room an Xbone for free, just like they did with the 360 mini.

Worked wonders back then.

The 360 is my favorite console ever, and I've been playing since the Atari days. But the One is leaving me sort of cold, which I never expected. I still believe MS can turn things around with a great E3. Personally, I would love to see what they can do with Halo on next gen, and a great Halo showing would really get me to believe again. Also, if the rumor about dedicated servers is true, that would also go along way.

So with hope, I created a GIF. What will it take to turn things around for you guys?

Just show up. I am all aboard still. No one is slowing my hype train down, no matter how hard they try.

Wasn't sure where to post this - and it's not at all worth a thread...

But I've mentioned before that there is no such thing as bad PR (as a general rule - give or take some extreme examples).

http://www.google.com/trends/hottrends/visualize?nrow=5&ncol=5&pn=p8

This is quite frequently showing Xbox One.
The results when you search Xbox One (at least for me) are nearly always mainstream media pages that are either neutral or pretty positive about the features of the console.

I'm not trying to imply success or good business strategy in this - but I found it a mildly interesting insight into what I assumed Microsoft was doing - knocking out the controversial decisions very early on - and then riding the controversy for a while... I imagine 90% of their PR will be dedicated to positive news from here on out - the general idea being to launch with hype and sheer word-of-mouth and/or brand impressions.

As for the topic - Crackdown 3, more Forza details, a Halo game - a couple of other interesting games, and maybe an attractive price point - and I'm on board. Anti-consumer or otherwise I'm looking forward to a strong game line up in whatever console I purchase.

Edit: If they announced a Skies of Arcadia 2 (never happening) - I'd buy one regardless of price point I'd imagine... I just wouldn't be able to control my anticipation levels. Never happening though.

They can turn it around by falling on their sword and getting out of video games.

I wonder if at this point they should contemplate getting out of the console space. Trying to use the Xbox as a buffer against Apple and Google and the backlash against Xbone has shown exactly why those two don't care about video games. The fact that they didn't step on Sony's throat when they had the chance makes me wonder why they're in the console business at all. They should just set up Xbox as a service and be done with it.

Clarification.

I think that's the sane answer. Alot of my friends in the UK were raving over the Xbox One Until I explained the no game sharing between friends. Lack of TV integration for the UK. Alot were not Interested in the TV features its about the games. I listed some of the features and alot were swaying towards the PS4. I am getting both day one but I am still reeling by the reveal.
The PS2 was my fav console with the Sega Megadrive but the 360 eclipsed them both for sheer enjoyment. But I will have no hesitation giving MS the finger if this gets worse and worse.

I do also believe Sony haven't quite been honest . They ve been a PR dream so far. Everything we would require of a next gen console they ve delivered in there reveal and PR since . But I do think that with EA stepping back with online passes Sony are doing something similar and we may have to pay a fee for used games or game sharing. At some point the loss to the used game market must be a big problem. But the consumer will lose out as shops Lilly close and we ll edge closer to digital downloads. The problem with that is the HD size and the stupid prices MS and Sony charge for digital copies of games you can pick up for half the RRP price they charge on Live or PSN.

Nothing. When it boils down to Microsoft's first party efforts and Sony's first party efforts Sony deserves the benefit of the doubt. It's also pretty clear that all Microsoft will be getting out of third parties is exclusive DLC.

Going go out on a limb and predict something.

That Game Company making a MS published Kinect exclusive game for xbox one.

Not sure if its a big deal or not. PSN's poster child going xbox exclusive might be big for the people who dont know that most of the team broke off after Journey shipped but its good fan boy fodder and makes MS look like they care about indies and new ideas.

While I agree with you - isn't exclusive Respawn-mech title a possibility?

Honestly, there is nothing they can do with that 24-hour check and fee for exchanging games with friends. First they would have to do away with that nonsense.

After that, just show me the games and price point that make it more attractive than the 4 and I'm all set to give them my money.

I won't hold my breath.

I totally agree with your comments dude. I think this is the last MS console. If they can't gain full living room control like Peter Molyneux said on the IGN xbone reveal. I believe its all over. The problem with anyone outside the US these TV and quick changing screens are really irrelevant . Selling a North American console to the world is MS biggest problem from the reveal , they have totally alienated the whole world now. It will be some E3 to get it back.

I'm still shocked by the notion about the 360 as favourite console ever after 25 years of gaming, but i'll try

My thoughts exactly.
It seems people are forgetting that even if they straighten things out and give us concrete info there's still one major problem with the way they're going to deliver their content: freakin Xbox Live. It's still a rip-off. Fix that first Microsoft.

There's nothing that Microsoft can announce at E3 that would change my mind about getting the system.

While I own a 360, ever since I've gone back to PC gaming, I haven't touched the 360.

And now that it seems that the strategy for the system is more oriented toward functionality that I have no need for, rather than a more focused effort on games, I'm definitely not getting one.

So for me, it's a PC + WiiU future (as soon as Pikmin 3 comes out).

No DRM or a block on used games. Plus some games would be nice instead of kinect stuff no one cares about. Oh yeah, and maybe some services that work outside of the US.

Mattrick is an old school programer. He shipped his first game in 1982, which I am going to guess is before your time. You can criticize the man for many things, but he knows games.

Hmm, didn't know that. Guess I just see his involvement with the 360 and the new Xbox One and he seems to make it more of a DVR than a game console. I know it's not a single person decision, but that's the face that represents the current xbox.

I'm a Playstation fan, but I don't think they'll have too hard a time convincing folks who can be swayed by games to stick with them. I forsee Shadow Complex 2 (since its been on hiatus and was said to be done ages ago), Killer Instinct, Halo, Quantum Break, the zombie game (Black tusk?), Fortnite, Forza, obligatory Kinect games, Ryse, timed Respawn game, PlayFirst's game (can't remember if its been called for 360 for not), Dance Central, Fable free to play.

I don't give a fuck how many games they have on display. I don't care how glorious they may look. As long as used gaming is being fucked in the ass and that 24 hour cycle bullshit is still part of the console I'm not buying it. Period.

And I can't wait for the E3 conference when MS shows Halo or the next Gears and all these "gamers" who have been crying "anti-Consumer" the past few days all of a sudden develop fucking amnesia and start pre-ordering the Uno ASAP. "Anti-Consumerism? What anti-consumerism? Did you just see fucking Halo 17?!"

I know gamers, we are a fickle bunch who talk a good game but RARELY back that shit up. We're also whores who will spend money on shit we know we damn well shouldn't (Xbox fucking Live anyone?!). Far too many of us are beholden to this hobby. The majority of the cry babies on the internet will crack... count on it.

$299 for console without subscription

$20 - $30 games.

As for me, the used games, DRM, and no borrowing games is a deal breaker.

I don't care about used games, but I do care about is what games will be on the system. If they have enough first and third party exclusive games at their E3 showing then that's all that matters.

Make sure all the gaming press is xboned so they can spread the gospel, especially the Doritos Pope.

LMAO.

NAILED IT.

This. Just show us lots of cool new games.

I'm sorry to say that won't work for Wii U or Xbox One IMO. Microsoft made a terrible move with the Xbox One being underpowered compared to the PS4. If the Xbox One had a 7970 in it, maybe the DRM and other "setbacks" could be forgiven, but it doesn't.

Games and that's about it. Everything else will quickly become yesterday's news (courtesy of game induced amnesia) if Microsoft are willing to go all out and fund some massive titles.

Deal would be sealed if they come out at a competitive price, perhaps even cheaper than the PS4.

We may not get the price, but we'll get the games and that's probably enough to turn the tide for now. As for bullshit used games policies, they'll pathetically backtrack on that to an extent and people will be happy with something only slightly bullshit. Sony will follow suit but not announce it and/or blame the developers/publishers and then it will reluctantly be accepted as the norm.

Lost Odyssey 2, by Mistwalker x Sakaguchi x Uematsu.

Good enough for me.

best case scenario we get

Quantum Break
Rare game (new IP? Kinect?)
Lionhead game (MMO-lite)
Twisted Pixels game for Kinect
Ryse
Black Tusk (FPS)
Titan

Forza 5
Halo 5
Crackdown 3
2nd Rare game (classic IP?)
4J HD port (rare? halo 2?)
Dance Central 4
By the numbers Kinect games

at e3. probably going to be worse.

interested in what rare, lionhead, black tusk, 343 are working on. also titan and crackdown 3.

don't see myself getting too excited over anything, though.

They can't turn this around.

It deserves to crash and burn.

Games and support don't mean anything to me when it's wrapped up such an anti-consumer system.

Nothing. There's no amount of games that would make me support how anti-consumer the console is. Such a system deserves to fail. If they were to drop everything announced this week I still don't think it'd make a difference as this is the direction they clearly want to go in. When you say things like "you have permission to play your game" and "we’ve also taken into account that our customers will want to play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if they lose their connection" it doesn't leave much room for hope.

They can announce that they will re-see some things

-3 gb os for "instant-swiiiiitching" and kinect online state (and who knows what else)<--- scrapped
-ridiculus drm of various kinds. <--- scrapped
-cant function without kinect pluged in <----- scrapped

You still then remain with a seriously underpowered machine compared to sony or pc,
But I will be willing to look at you if you do the things above dear microsoft

As you are now, you may stick your 15 exclusives up your ass and be gone.
Oh, and take your fucking cloud with you. Such bullshit!

I've said it before, but they'd have to retcon the used game/mandatory installation DRM and announce that skype, netflix, browser, other basic online apps, and online mutliplayer is free for us to use without a Gold account.

Those are fundamental. No matter how many amazing games they show, as long as those are in account, I can't justify the purchase. If basic online services are behind a paywall, 90% of the XBox One's functions are useless to me. It's only salt on the wound that Xbox is going to be using the internet that I won't access on it to check up on me every day to verify my box.

Since they probably can't take back the DRM system even if they wanted to at this point, the best they could do at E3 is announce that they're restructuring their Gold account service to be an actual premium service, while giving multiplayer and basic apps back to the people to use without a paywall.

If none of these are addressed, I feel like no amount exclusives can sway me from these black marks against it.

Games, lots of them and amazing jaw dropping ones at that. Sony only had one for me and that was inFamous.

Also very interested in what the new IPs are.
