SHOCKING NEWS: Xbox One Voice Commands During Demo Weren't Real Time

They'll never learn... Milo and Stars Wars Kinect BS all over again.

They did learn. A faked demo is much better than a "Bam!" incident, especially when you can later have private sessions with the journalists to show them the real thing in details.
Does anybody believe that voice commands on the Xbone won't work ?

Everyone watching live certainly knew it wasn't real, nor intended to be. It was a bunch of dancers doing flips, running upside down inside a giant floating television, mimicking projected gameplay every so often as part of a dance routine.

Shit, i'm high. THe only people arguing that at the time were on n4g, this helps my memory a lot better. The star wars cirque show was nonsense.

I won't hear a bad word said about Kinect 2.0.
It's the reason I am most hyped for the Xbone. I can't wait to control my cable box using hand gestures and voice commands, it's going to be totally awesome. The day I mount the Kinect camera to the top of my TV and plug it in will be the happiest day of my life, apart from that time when space monkeys took me on their space submarine to Jupiter where we had tea and cakes with Elvis and Godzilla.

That much was clear. And let me state again that i have no clue why people feel the need to give voice commands to devices. I think it is the most retarded thing in development right now. It's great when you're driving in a car (siri). But to be shouting to a device in your house or even worse, on the street with Google glasses really sounds like a hell on earth to me.

Sorry but all on stage kinect stuff was supposed to be real including dude talking over skype and remote control for your tv.

If that wasn't real time then i see how it will work in house. Just like old kinect unresponsive.

I have a pretty hard time believing it will work as quickly, fluidly, or consistently as shown.

"see it's that fast" (after switching between the os and the price is right)
wellllllll, not really........ considering it was faked.

If all things are stages, why MS need him using clicker in pocket?

Everything in the screen can be controlled completely in backstage, it would be more precise and more responsive.

Use Ocems Razor before coming to judgement.

one plausible thing I can see that clicker doing, is toggling the Kinect mic on and off so that it isn't listening to him when it shouldn't be, which would be logical because he's talking about Xbox a lot, and you don't want it constantly doing random things.

so perhaps less a fake, and more of way of adjusting the environment to ensure conditions stay optimal.

Well it was (as far as we know) still an Xbox One running the feed on the screen. Not specifically using voice commands for that doesn't mean that the actual multitasking features of the console don't switch that fast.

Of course it was fake.

I think I also saw a gif of this in which that Yusef dude was doing the "snap" thing with Kinect, and you could clearly see that the window snapped BEFORE he actually made the gesture. He quickly tried to correct himself. I don't have the gif though and I have no idea where I saw it.

This?

Welp, there goes the most impressive thing about the Xbox One conference.

They probably work IRL though, just were staged so that you could see it demonstrated. Best way to avoid stupid shit like controller batteries dying on stage, etc.

You know what is worse than the demos being faked? The friggin fake ass M$ love fest reactions to those fake demos by the paid M$ staff!

I praised it so I find it deceiving. Not if it's as fast in the end, but if there's more lag in a real situation, I call it false advertising.

Anyway, IGN reckons that the voice commands during the really impressive Xbox One multitasking and UI demonstration weren't real time at all... they were being controller by a clicker.
Well, it's speculation, it's possible that he had a clicker that just enabled his lapel microphone to connect to the XBone, since I wouldn't want to rely on an always on microphone in a conference with hundreds of screaming employees.

However, I also realize that the whole presentation was a bit of smoke and mirrors. For example, isn't it amazing that after the skype call, conveniently the 'live game" had just the basket play that he had on his fantasy league? Something would have to be tweaked to make a recording kick off the services that connect to the fantasy league system.... right?

Just voice command?
Actually I assumed that all the Kinect stuff could be somehow staged, but either way the point was to show how the thing worked and they were good at that, so I would not argue about this issue.

That's not surprising. They wouldn't want it to fail during a live presentation

By the way, why does everyone put a disclaimer at the start of their thread? That always bugs me. If it's old, thread will be locked, and no shits will be given. No need to apologize. I can understand being hesitant as I've done it before, but have more confidence people!

Of course it was fake. Also all the gaming press and gaming podcasts ate that shit up and thought it was real. What a joke.

Reasonable.

Although I think the command formula is "XBOX : ACTION", which is still enough to discriminate the normal sentence and word connections.

Things are works in progress

Dash isn't finished yet, drivers aren't finished, gestures aren't finished

Stuff takes time to finish especially for really complicated OSes like Xbox

We know kinect worked decently in practice and already see some of the impressive new tech

Microsoft has never been a let down in terms of OS, despite the criticism of some choices

It's a long and difficult task making an OS

The voice commands work pretty well in Kinect one now. Not sure why anyone will think they won't work going forward. Faked/staged demo or not.

Is that really all the evidence that is being presented to challenge that demonstration? Really? Nonsense, the demo was real.

How did he accomplish all of those functions by twiddling with a remote in his pocket that he couldn't even see? People are really grasping at straws now to find any and everything they can find to attack Microsoft.

This is like Obama had an ear piece on during one of the debates level of crazy.

I didn't put a gun to microsofts head and say reveal your product before the worlds largest gaming expo. Neither did Sony, or Nintendo. There is no need to DEBUT shitty nothingness when E3 is merely weeks away. If every single facet of your product and services, and direction of your device is all up in the air, I don't see it getting grounded a few days later.

Yup, the giveaway was whenever he scratched his left testicle Kinect would respond...unless that's one of command gestures, and if so I'm sorry.

The probably with "faking" it in the way the article claims is that it doesn't really give you a good performance metric for UI responsiveness. At the very least they could have used a proprietary Kinect that had a microphone input so they could have had people wearing unidirectional lapel microphones to deal with any ambient noise issues. Then, at least, you'd get a sense that, yes, this is how responsive the thing is when it can hear you without having to deal with the possibility that it's just acting up during the demo because of the ambient noise problems of the venue.

Now, though, we don't know even if the responsiveness was real or not.

I wonder if people repeating this actually saw the show and not just the gif. It was a "dance routine" on the Cirque du Soleil event. It was never presented as a real time gameplay, because it was part of a demo reel during which several different Kinect games were shown on screen with dancer dancing in front of it.

It's cool guys. They where being deceptive because building a console is hard.

I don't understand how this is confirmed news. It's not, that I can tell. Just speculation.
It's most likely true, and also doesn't really matter given the SS demonstration and the fact this would screw up WAY easier. If it actually bugs anyone they should probably think of this more of a demonstration of their goals than an actual practice of the technology (which they showed on site anyway as I recall.)
