Sonic Lost Worlds Debut Trailer [Up: Wii U + 3DS screenshots]

I'm just mad that it took Nintendo so freaking long. They should have invested more into the HD era, now they are playing catch up.
Finally this september I can buy Sonic, Rayman, and Wonderful 101, instead of the crap that's currently out.

I 'm buying a Wii U, I just hope games like Sonic:The Lost Worlds, isn't a one off. If so I'll be this angry:

I think it's pretty obvious when looking at the games that Lost World is going for a more cartooney-look than the last few Sonic games.

Graphics look fine to me, I prefer platformers to be 60fps and simple aesthetics. Just make me care about the gameplay Sega.

Yeah, Nintendo assets look pretty damn good blown up to HD with some AA, as Dolphin proves.

Indeed. Seeing those pics of Galaxy 1/2 in HD was enough to make me desire "HD Remasters" of the Galaxy games. And only makes me more hyped to see what 3D Mario will look like.

now about these new abilities sonic has......... really running on walls we've been doing that since when adventure?

and his pull up ability...... -_-

not that im complaining...... well i am but im still hype for a sonic game

Are people really that underwhelmed by this graphically? What's wrong with it? I thought it looked amazing. They were transitioning from CG to gameplay and it looked almost the same

Looks about as good as Sonic Generations PC but I won't know until we get some HQ video and some direct feed screens.

Right now it looks like an extension of SG but with some added game play. Can't see this being bad.

Betting this game is made by the Sonic Colors/Secret Rings team, it looks like something right up their alley. That makes me guess the third Wii-U exclusive Sonic game not announced yet is being made by the Generations/Unleashed team.

Like the look of it, in the team that the first thing I thought of was Sonic X-Treme. Not what I was expecting, but I will go with it.

Also calling Eggman is the game's main villain. The dead give-away is that there are Badniks around. Story will probably be Saturday cartoon-styled like Colors/Generations was, and these characters are being duped by him. There's also probably a seventh one, as someone pointed out they match the colors of the Chaos Emeralds perfectly, but the white one is missing.

We also can say from the teaser pic the game, looks like after Green Hill we will have at least a forest, desert, volcano, ice, and ocean environments:

I think it looks decent, but I'm not really the best at determining whether or not the reason is artistic direction or technical ability.

However, the difference between the CG scenes and gameplay were pretty clear to me.

The volcano level is going to be fucking awesome. It's going to be interesting to see Sonic return to actual core-of-earth style levels again, and that one seems to have a skyline even.

I can't say, the compression kills the video generally. I'm waiting for Sega to put up the full, uncompressed trailer in their press vault before I judge. Would also like to see direct game play footage that isn't obscured by camera angles. It could go either way, but I like the artistic direction so far.

Just my speculation, but I believe it's to cut corners. With regards to anime and manga, everything is about cutting corners.

In anime, such a pose is much easier to animate. You really only have to animate the legs. A standard running pose is a lot tougher to animate in that there are more moving parts. Most anime is done on the cheap. Plus it looks cool.

In manga, the same reasons apply. It's harder to do a good running pose. Arms out is easier to draw. Plus it looks cool.

In short: time/money constraints and it looks cool.

Game looks really good btw.

Thanks for the response. I think that's a good theory. I guess it became a thing, and now games like Sonic feature their characters in that pose.

The picture from the Nintendo Direct is interesting. I forgot about that. The world is fragmented, and I wonder of Sonic is trying to fix it.

This screenshot in particular gives me a lot of hope that this game will essentially be 2D Sonic level design philosophy, reimagined in 3D. It seems like just a straight line at first with some enemies to bounce on, but look at the sides of the screen. There are walls you can run on with rings, the top of which have springs and paths which lead to the top of that rotating set of platforms at the end of the cylinder. You can clearly run around the tube in this level, which likely leads to even more unseen paths.

This is gonna be a very different type of Sonic game, it looks like.

No you're right. It looks good, just a very different style than most of the recent sonic games.

This style doesn't really have as much room for the graphical bells and whistles, and clearly, there are some elements that are intentionally retro. From a pure graphics-whore perspective, it is definitely not as pretty. But I bet it has a better frame rate, which can be important in a Sonic game.

I think it's pretty obvious when looking at the games that Lost World is going for a more cartooney-look than the last few Sonic games.

Sonic Colours was also cartoony with saturday morning cartoon vibes and it looked better than this. This simplistic approach doesn't work very well with these typical Sonic looks imo and were used much better in Galaxy - which also looks better than the stage shown, which reminds me more of Monkey Ball if anything.

If I'm not imagining things, I think they also use the model from Colours here instead of the one from Unleashed/Generations, so it probably started as a Wii spinoff or something.

Graphically this is nowhere near Generations. Its very simplistic with pretty basic geometry choices (the grass tufts are... stylistic I guess), while Generations had full 3d layers of comprehensive shit in its backgrounds. Here the "Background Galaxy" is most probably a skybox and if its not I'd have no idea why.

Okay, this looks pretty damn amazing. My one problem with the graphics is that the lighting makes things look oddly flat and kind of studio-lit, but thats the kind of thing that can easily change between now and then. The actual gameplay looks really really interesting

Yeah they had pretty good composer for Sonic colors.. but Sonic 4 music was piece of shit...
I hope they don't bring in Jun Senoue as the lead musician. Generations' best tracks came from Kumatani, Ohtani, and Tokoi, not to mention some others I'm forgetting (Nanba?).

Having just caught up with the news: wow. There are more than a few things that seem iffy to me, but the big stuff looks much better than I expected. For starters: I never saw an Xtreme/SMG mash-up coming. I figured it was going to be more of the latter from the promo pic, but this is a pleasant surprise. It looks like the homing attack's out; the new bounce attack makes more sense and places more emphasis on precision platforming. If they're including momentum physics in this (which is a possibility, given how Sonic can be seen kicking enemies as he exits arcs in his general vector), then I'll be impressed and sold on the game mechanics.

The aesthetic on display here is awesome: it looks like how I would have imagined a 3D Sonic would look like pre-Adventure. Sure, it's technically underwhelming, but who knows if that means no loading times, 60 FPS locked, &c. Really, the big ugliness here are those world bosses. They're dull, and I'll only remember the green gal because she's got Rule 34 and Scarlett Johannson fish-lips. Some other conspicuous shit appears here and there, too, like an overabundance of springs (somewhat the case for boosters), improving but half-hearted level design (more platforming please!), and a general lack of footage off of which we could investigate more. Let's hope the IGN stuff is worth it!

Finally: if this game's being developed by Yasuhara at NST, then I'll pee in my pants with glee. That automatically means great game design in action.

Already pointed out a million times probably, but this trailer does remind me of that cancelled Sonic game on the Sega Saturn but obviously more modern.

This new Nintendo/Sega love fest is conflicting to young Whiskeymatt but is one of the best things to present day Whiskeymatt. This is looking fantastic!

I hope Sonic doesn't have the homing cannonball attack, that move is incredibly boring and it seems to be in every Sonic game I play.

I love it... people should worry about gameplay more than Graphic..

Even the good Sonic games lately don't compare to Mario gameplaywise, but they made up for it with great visuals and audio. Sure, one should be happy if a Sonic game actually turns out good gameplaywise, but Sonic Team also got the best out of each console lately, so this step back is quite disappointing.

I was fucking stunned playing daytime in Unleashed and even surprised by the production quality of Colours. The WiiU still lacks a game for graphical showcase, so with the teaser pic I was hoping something would finally come out, but now it's just some okay-ish looking Galaxy clone. (at best)

Dude looked like he was going SSJ on the slo-mo anyway.
I still contend that the best moment of the match was when the GK got the goal and tied it up.
Yeah, Muñoz's was pretty cool! It was a great final to watch; CA messed up big time.

I never played any of those, but if it turns out to be a normal sidescroller on the 3DS, I doubt I'll buy it.
That's probably going to be the case, man. A few 3D sections at most.
Is it confirmed who's working on the 3DS version? I think Dimps is at it again, but I haven't kept up with the news on this game. It would be great if Sega is doing it this time.

Yeah, they could really do a lot with this design concept in a Sonic game. There are probably totally different paths all around that cylinder. You could hide secrets all over the place.

This method of creating graphics might appear cheap, but I think in the long run of things, it will be beneficial to the game as a whole.

By not focusing on creating level geometry that is beautiful first, playable second, SEGA are focusing on making worlds where you truly can traverse everything you see. The simplistic nature of the visuals also should make it so levels can be longer, and for there to be more of them.

Sonic Generations was a fantastic game, a ton of fun, but there were only 18 levels total, 9 of which were actual 3D worlds. This time around, I don't think it'll be too out of the ball-park to expect more stages with more to interact with and explore. Just look at the shot I posted a few posts earlier, there hasn't been level design depth in a 3D Sonic game before, ever.

There is a Wii U and 3DS version.

Never understood why companies make two different games and then release them at the same time with the same name. Can't that only hurt them? A mom sees the game - she is going to buy one or the other, not both. You'd need to frequent video game websites to know they are actually different.

Its look like a N64 game

No it doesn't.
