Still no replacement for Sherlock... But I guess better than nothing
Can't wait!

Luther's 1 pretty bad episode with the burglar and the crystals>all 4 really terrible episodes of Sherlock. one of which was that horrible hellhound episode. Not even Cumberbatch could save that wreck.

I'm now trying to figure out which episodes of Sherlock are the terrible ones. It probably goes without saying that two of them are the middle one in each series (The Blind Banker; The Hounds of Baskerville), but the other four are all rather well-recieved.

I can't wait for season 3, but I have a question:

How come this wasn't a "regular" show? People refer to it as a mini-series at this point, but I don't think it was originally produced that way? I'm confused as to why it's taken this long to get to Luther season 3.

It's fairly normal length for a UK TV series; a little short (around 8 episodes would be more common for a drama these days), but not drastically so. We just have much shorter series over here than you may be used to.

I know UK comedies tend to be six episodes and UK dramas tend to be 12-13. Luther season 1 was 6 episodes, season 2 was 4 episodes, and now almost two years later season 3 is coming. Don't get me wrong I'm happy as hell it's coming back, but I'm not sure why it's been such a rocky road to get here. I was hoping for some elaboration on that if anyone had theories/facts.

I assumed it was a combination of Idris Elba's limited availability along with the creators wanting to make sure they had something worthwhile to put on screen. i.e. if they only had four episodes worth of great material, they weren't going to stretch it to six. I don't have much to back that up, and perhaps there are a few people more familiar with the series with more insight.

Just put Alice Morgan on screen for six episodes.

So few... :(

I guess it's better to tell a tight story than have useless filler, but still... only 4 episodes is a bummer.

I think it's cool, it's a nice break from the usual 10-13 episode "routine" waiting for the last three episodes to be mindblowing etc.

Is there definitely a Luther movie after this? I wonder if 4 episodes would really deliver the series finale or would that fall onto the movie.

I love that this has got Robin Hood Gardens on film, since demolition has started now. That site should really have been refurbished.

I thought Luther S1 was better than Sherlock. S2 of Luther...eh, not so much. Great start, but tepid finish. Whereas Sherlock had an amazing S2 opener and a very strong finish.

Either way, no point in comparing them. Two great BBC shows are coming back for more. Great trailer.

What a coincidence. I just set out my boxsets the other day, to run through seasons 1 and 2 again.

Can't wait for this season.

I think this and I remember it not having great ratings for the hour it was on, on BBC1 (9pm). I remember it was a long wait to see if a second series would be made, compared to Sherlock which was a hit instantly.

But yeah, I imagine the count is more an availability thing. Stuff like Spooks used to get around 10+ a series, so it's not impossible.

The only thing I kinda miss from the first series is how it built up over episodes. Series 2 felt like events and I kinda wanted some form of status quo from a TV show. Like at this point I don't know what a film will do that the show couldn't. Also, more Alice, obviously!

Idris Elba, was in Prometheus and Pacific Rim, I am sure that held them up.

yes, time for a rewatch indeed

I have to finish Whitechapel yet, but you know what? Fuck that shite ( i like it but Luther is Luther)
