Major Nelson: "We Are Listening!"

I'm amazed (and very entertained) by the fact that anything Microsoft says is being mocked at this point.

They can say something like "$40 dollars games and not DRM" and they will be mocked.

That'd still be much worse than today's system, so...

It's easy to shit the bed.

Harder to get it cleaned and get the smell out.

Oh great... MS is listening to get more COD Map packs as requested.

As well as a sequel to kinect sports.

And a higher price for xboc live gold.

Can't wait.

Thats what happens when you go to a professional interview in your underwear. You may come back in a business suit later but everyone will still see you in underwear. First impressions last.

I don't believe either company is "Listening" maybe reading the opinions but I doubt either will change anything.

Eh, "We are listening" is pretty much a meaningless statement anyways. Doesn't denote any change or usage of the feedback, just that they've seen it.

Interesting. It elicited a much different response when some Sony reps gave responses just as vague about the whole DRM and used-games issues.

Both of these companies both just want to tip-toe around the issues until they have to commit on stuff.

It shouldn't take rounding. Answers? Relevant people? That was the whole problem in the first place. 20 different people giving 20 different answers. There should be one person, one answer. It shouldn't be that difficult. VIDEOGAMES.

Well, I think that's the point - all the right answers, correct, through one outlet (Maj. Nelson). About two weeks late but whatevs. I don't think most people here will like most of the answers.

Yes, but Sony actually hasn't come out and said anything outright about it yet, so there's the element of hope.

"We've listened to how much everyone hates an internet check every 24 hours... so now it's 48." That would almost be as sad as their Windows 8 Start button that launches Metro.

I think the Win8 Start Button the launches Metro is a perfect example of how Microsoft thinks these days.

Really great strategy. Now when they slightly defang their bullshit it will look like a huge win.

Honestly, what can they do?

If the system does require every game to be installed on the HDD in order to do that fast switching between The Price is Right and your game; not using some kind of CD-Key authentication will lead to rampant cases of people just lending a game to someone else or buying and then returning the disc while keeping it on their HDD.

They could make it so that you must install the game, but it requires the disc to boot (like PC games did before Steam).

They could do this:

1) If the disc is in the drive, allow offline play.

2) If the game was bought via download, allow offline play (since we can't trade them in, lend, rent, whatever without a disc anyway).

It really is. They listen to consumers but they don't hear consumers. It's like duh here is something that will hopefully shut you up. It's not exactly what you wanted but it's remotely related.

Yes, they have also tiptoed around it. They just haven't had their feet held to the fire as MS has, and they haven't said anything concrete since February.

I'll say this about Microsoft, they do big turnarounds as often as they make huge terrible mistakes. So I'm more hopeful than most about the prospects of this pressure coming good. I think they'll stick to the Kinect thing, but used game DRM and always-online seems doomed. They genuinely thought it wasn't going to be this big a deal - you can tell. Which is good, because they're likely not married to the idea either.

1) In the box there is a QR code that Kinect scans and validates online, this is the only time you'll need it to authenticate. If you want to sell, you have to disable the code online first, and that same becomes usable with another account. Still shitty, but much better IMO.

What if you've signed your account into 4 of your friends consoles? PS3 says hello!

MS is well cemented in whatever strategy they've chosen. They will not simply flip a switch and change plans less than 6 months from launch.

I think Microsoft can still save it though. A way to keep the DRM in but make it easier to take. The way they were talking about it a few weeks ago wasn't the way to do it though. Which is crazy because they knew about all this talk even before they had their conference.

It took gamers a couple years maybe? to get used to Steam as well. Steam has huge benefits though and it is pretty open. I think Microsoft can do the same thing with their ecosystem...hopefully.

If you are interested in staving off cynicism try giving every company a chance every time. It costs you nothing to boot.

I think it's just the opposite. If I was a gambling man I'd put money on them not removing the online check-in requirement.
