The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

Eh, the reviews seem to be overhyping it way too much, so I'll wait for some player impressions before I decide on it. I've been burned by just about every single "critical darlings" this gen.

I can’t.

Since my review will be posted in a non-gaming magazine later this month, I though I'd post some breif opinions of my own here.

1. This really feels like this generation's Resident Evil 4.
2. Possibly the best intro in any game I've ever played.
3. The E3 demo was a fairly accurate representation of how the game plays.
4. If you turn off listening mode from the start, the game hardly even mentions it exists. Never felt like I needed it; just turn the volume up and you'll be fine.
5. This is a long game. Took me
13
hours to beat.
6. Story is good, pacing is great and voice-acting is amazing.

This is coming from someone who adored Uncharted 2, but was dissapointed in Uncharted 3.

Except RE 4 brought something to the table gameplay-wise that later defined a generation of shooters. TLoU does no such thing, and as such....

...this is the score I'd give the game. FWIW, I'm a very gameplay-oriented gamer.

polygon is a fucking joke. they gave sim city a 9.5 review score. and now this?
just for comparison. remember me got an 8...

Yeah it's real fucking easy, I shit out well received games weekly.

Getting a bunch of 10s doesn't mean anything. Uncharted 2 got great scores without being a good game. All you need is the right balance of exclusivity and pre-release hype, while attempting to be "deep" with a tacked on story that doesn't suit your gameplay. Bioshock did it just a few months ago. If you have the right budget it's pretty easy to get the press to cum all over your games.

People have a hard time remembering that different opinions are a good thing. If the game was too oppressive for a reviewer to enjoy, I can understand that; it's a matter of taste and reviews are subjective.

Still, I can't side with people who complain about shooting controls in games like this. Not every game needs to control like Call of Duty – it's supposed to be tense. Same thing with Mirror's Edge; if you could have just picked up a gun and easily laid our head shots on every soldier in a room, it would not have been as exciting as it was.

And when have you played the game?.

Those infos are way better than any score. Can't wait.

The funny thing about Polygon was that Gies was feeding a bunch of negative hyperbole to someone I know before the review embargo dropped. I had a feeling their score would be lower after that.
I don't get it. Does he think naughty dog is Japanese? Warui dogs

I did not buy any of the UC - which is probably a crime. So, this will be my first ND game since jak and dexter 3.

Can not wait for it.

I don't understand people getting angry over reviews. Someone didn't like the game quite as much as everyone else, so what? A healthy spread of views is far better than everyone just towing the line and giving the expected score. Doesn't mean you can't love it any less!

As long as it's fair and backed up I don't have a problem with it. There are people who put stock in reviews and won't buy games because of it. It won't happen with this game because it's going to end up with a 93+ but there are people that do that.

Don't any other reviewer in here get taken out of the immersion when Ellie or any other NPC character can run into enemies without them noticing while you do your best sneaking around? Because that is the one major issue for me so far in the game.

Most else is outstanding.

Now I can't care any less about review scores BUT with that 7.5 amidst the higher scores, is there an ulterior motives here? I see people claiming being sponsored by MS/Xbox so is there reason to call bullshit? I mean, can't Naughty Dog investigate, are there laws being broke or is this standard practice?

Like I said, I don't care. I'm all over it. But the claims here make me think something more "dirty" is at play.
