Why? Let the man be hyped ffs lol

Saw this on your Twitter, christ. Not linking to the Polygon review is really one of the pettiest things I've ever seen on this forum, and that's saying a lot.

I'm on the same boat regarding this, and I'm not even fond of most Polygon staff/policies.

I think people are getting a bit too onsessed with "perfect" scores. In oter forms of media great works get "low" metacritic ratings (in the 60s, 70s and 80s) and no one bats an eye or throws a hissy fit over it.

Just checked the OP for the first time since embargo ended. I was scrolling through all those perfect scores and saying "God damn", then I reached the bottom and burst out laughing at the Polygon score.
Gamespot wrote what was in my opinion the best uncharted 3 review so I'm interested in reading theirs.

89 pages... and you thought gaf didn't care about the opinion of "lolgamingjournalists".

Polygon isn't a banned site yet?

Weird.

Anyway, no surprise that this is getting such amazing scores. Naughty Gods, indeed.

Looking like Yet another superb PS3 exclusive.

To be fair, it's VERY RARELY thrown around as much as we're seeing here. When this many super high scores show up I think it's safe to say that the game in question will be pretty good at the very minimum.

Some of the people that gave this game a perfect score rarely do so. Adam Sessler these days rarely does so, so it's worth listening to.

You can understand why scoring is my least favorite part of my job. I am harsh. We have a 10 point scale, after all, and I try to use it. Worthwhile games can exist in a range outside of the top 1%. I have given my personal Game of the Year an 8.5 on three separate occasions (Dead Rising 2, Terraria, and Ratchet: Crack in Time), so you can see how much value I put on 8-range games.

The Last of Us didn't earn a 9 (or higher) in my eyes. However, it's still an incredible experience.
Seems like you are trying to change the system but it isn't changing with you. It would be nice if everyone used the whole scale but that definitely isn't the case at Gamespot. Personally when I go to a site, a score means nothing on its own. I evaluate it relative to scores from other games, especially those I've played. And when I do that I expect a level of consistency so I know what to expect. Seems like you are reviewing on a totally different scale to everybody else at Gamespot, and that is where people are raising their eyebrows with your reviews

I did read your review though and it was very well written

... pretty sure Naughty Dog will hit their Metacritic bonus levels, if that's what's concerning you.

No. Nothing like that. I know you Zeliard, and I know that you as a fan of Obsidian want them to get their due recognition of their work. Within reason of course. Knowing beforehand that they will never please everyone. I'm pleased that Naughty Dog is getting recognition for their game. As I haven't played it yet, it gives me assurance that I'm in to a treat. The ramifications of a superlative metascore are not on my immediate worries, just the overall reception of the game is enticing for me. Edge 10 is great. I don't agree with the harshness that Tom Chick reviews Naught Dog past games but I understand why he does so, and I await with special interest his review to see if this game it's the one that wins him over. In short. I'm a a fan, not a fanatic.

Can get too linear

http://www.gamereactor.se/recensioner/108221/The+Last+of+Us/

That is the vibe I am getting from the other reviews. The problem is nothing in the + column overcomes the "linear" part for me. I want a definite opinion on the "waves" issue once gaf gets this. Waves + linear = I'm out personally

After reading the polygon review I have to say it wasn't a bad review. I'll have to play the game to see if it has any merit but at least they voiced their concerns clearly.

This is what Playstation is all about, the amazing exclusives that make people buy the system. Congrats Sony and Naughty Dog for creating yet another masterpiece this generation.

Just saw the OP - You seriously don't have a link to Polygon? Come on man, it's just a review score. I'm not a fan of Polygon either, but that's just kind of petty, don't you think?

Seriously. Talk about butt hurt. But hey, if people are going to criticize other people for being biased, perhaps they see no harm in being biased themselves.

if you want the review you can easily go to there site and read it there.

Do you hear yourself talk? Why not do that for all the other sites as well?

Exactly. They wouldn't even know what the consensus is or will be. I actually ripped that question right from Evilore's thread after the UC3 embarrassment, which ends up applying to a crazy amount of these threads.

You could make a brand new thread when a lower review hits, and the gut reaction to many posters would be anger while entering the thread, before reading anything. Way too much emotional attachment to a product that hasn't been experienced yet is a serious problem.

If Gamespot gave it a 7.5 people would complain, but in regards to Polygon it just smells. Its their fault for trying to be a credible reviewing outlet while being FUNDED by Microsoft. That smell is something they'll need to live with until the end of time.

Not to mention the SimCity reviewing fiasco.

Can you imagine if this were true for all reviews in all media? So a movie reviewer would give Twilight five stars because the target audience for the film would love it, regardless of how the reviewer felt about it? Reviews are personal, and the very definition of subjective. Objectivity has no place.

Target audience? I said the public as a whole.

I didn't realize that people considered the Twilight films:
1. widely loved by all consumers
2. a new watermark within it's genre
3. pushing the boundaries of the medium
4. features stellar acting

Objectivity is key to any kind of review process. Otherwise it's entirely conjecture with little to no worth. Just one person's opinion. The point of a critic or reviewer is that they have insight into the field and the ability to have greater educated insight into the successful execution of a project, relative to it's competition. If it's all just opinion then what sets a "professional" journalist/reviewer apart from the average forum goer?

Great reviews but I am still sceptical after Uncharted 3. It was still a great game but inferior to 2 in so many obvious ways.

And lol Polygon. I guess TLOU is no masterpiece like Mass Effect 3 or Sim City. Time to rap it up Naughty Dog.

Glancing over these reviews it seems this is yet another game whose production values are the basis for scores instead of the actual gameplay. Will probably end up as another Bioshock Infinite situation where every aspect of the production is so well executed the video gameiness of it will stand out like a sore thumb.

Not watching Sessler's review. I like and respect the guy, but after the Bioshock Infinite review I'm a little cautious about hyperbole. I think when a lot of people reviewed Bioshock Infinite they reviewed the story and setting, which was amazing, but it was just not a very fun game to play, the game design was a mess, the gunplay wasn't satisfying or rewarding, the enemies sucked, and the pacing was atrocious.

I want to love this so I'm going to make an attempt to not get caught up in the potential hyperbole. Note I said potential. It may very well just be that damn good, but I'd rather go in with modest and fair expectations and be blown away as opposed to going in with lofty expectations and coming out thinking "well it was pretty incredible but not quite Citizen Kane."

And one of my biggest pet peeves is when people say well something something was great but not the best thing ever. It's like, you're saying it's amazing but make it sound like it could have been better or didn't match or exceed your ridiculous expectations which to me is kind of disrespectful or undermining of the actual product.
