Truly amazing. I'm really happy for ND (and for us gamers lol)...their hard work seems to have paid off and paid off well. Now I look forward to hearing what fellow gaffers say about the game which I trust more than meta. Already saw one in this thread which sounded really really good

Yeah, we should be doing something more worthwhile, like arguing about boobs in Dragon's Crown

hahaha

Posters like FACE, GlamFM etc have been pushing for and promoting meltdowns for days now. It's no surprise they're the one's quoting the rare freak outs the most. These guys are just as bad as the freak outs themselves.

From page 20...

lol yep..it went as predicted earlier in the thread really. Embarrassing stuff, just as embarrassing as the very very few posters who got all dramatic over this

I'm gonna go in a different direction and say that regardless of arbitrary assigned numerical values, I love how the reviews universally appear to credit Ellie as a positive and integral component of the experience; even in the "low" Gamespot review they are completely effusive about what her character adds to the narrative and gameplay.

My hope is that this kind of reaction pushes developers to consider forcing gamers out of their comfort zones a little bit and eventually make grand, blockbuster games of this caliber that have you playing as a character like Ellie instead of Joel.

I prefer my more subtle one

Excellent.

It's funny, how the videogames medium is the only one, which gets constantly "masterpieces" ... keeps me wondering, why other medias don't take us seriously, if we challenge the human mind and art form all the time.

Young form of media. I bet cave painters had "masterpieces" all the time.

If you can't review a game with objectivity based on what you think the overall public's appreciation of the game will be you're doing it wrong.

try.

Can you imagine if this were true for all reviews in all media? So a movie reviewer would give Twilight five stars because the target audience for the film would love it, regardless of how the reviewer felt about it? Reviews are personal, and the very definition of subjective. Objectivity has no place.

I have no doubt in my mind that this game will be solid.... but when we get these "emotional story" AAA titles and all the review sites jump over each other in a chance to herald the "citizen kane of gaming", I tend to get really, really skeptical. I get this feeling where reviewers just want to be "part of history", and gloss over some key issues in both gameplay AND story in order to try to justify the medium they're covering. This happened with GTA IV, and it definitely happened with Bioshock Infinite. Both of which were perfectly fine, solid games, but to say that they were these game changing paragons of our time was definitely just the hype taking hold of everyone.

I take these reviews to mean: "Hey, this game's worth your time". Which definitely excites me. At the end of the day, it doesn't seem like there are any glaring errors that would keep me from buying the game, so ultimately these reviews do the job of saying "hey, get this game". But all the talk of really pushing the medium, etc... I have to see for myself before I buy into the hype.

They gave Simcity a 9.5. They justified it by saying that it was an offline version without the online hiccups well even now with the online working the game in itself is shallow and lame but they gave it a 9.5 LOL! Polygon is terrible imo.

Btw i'm not a Naughty dog fanboy and actually didn't like the Uncharted games.
I'm not saying they're not hacks, I'm saying that if MS paid someone to shit on Sony, they could do it far more effectively by flying under the radar and just slightly hurt the metacritic of every Sony game. This is way out of line with the majority to go unnoticed.

Amazing scores, but I don't really listen to reviews after the whole GTAIV debacle. Just recently I had to force myself to enjoy Bioshock Infinite and most of these very same reviewers praised that to heavenly gaming gods.

I'll be there day one though. Naughty Dog has never done me wrong.

I am with you. This is the most genuine opinion in this thread.

First, people were raging about 8.8, then they were angry about 8.0, now they are mad about 7.5.

Perhaps in a few years 6.0 reviews will be common and people in review threads will be finally forced to stop crying about "muh metacritic score".

Where is this coming from? Is it an editorial policy, or is this from Sony/ND? Can you say your site/mag?

The embargo says "Stuff you can't talk about in the review" and lists a bunch of stuff. It's totally standard embargo stuff.

So what's Kollar main point? Too afraid of spoilers to read any of these reviews. Seems like he thinks it's too violent...?

Review is without spoilers. His points are very valid and worth a read.

It's funny, how the videogames medium is the only one, which gets constantly "masterpieces" ... keeps me wondering, why other medias don't take us seriously, if we challenge the human mind and culture all the time.

Well, "other medias" get "masterpieces" all the time, too; they just also have the benefit of having actual history to leverage it against, when looking back.

I really look forward to playing this.

Though, not sure why some of you are getting upset about a 7.5 review. Someone had a different opinion, I don't see the big deal honestly.

Fuck my ps3 breaking on me earlier this year. I said I'd wait and see whether ps4 was backwards compatible, it's not, now I'm waiting for a price drop this e3.

It's expected that fans want the best for the object of their support. I want the best for Naughty Dog as a fan. It's unfortunate though that fan and fanatic are so damn close.

... pretty sure Naughty Dog will hit their Metacritic bonus levels, if that's what's concerning you.

I really don't trust reviews for Naughty Dog games since Uncharted 2 (and to a lesser extent, 3), but I am significantly more excited for the direction of TLoU.

With all due respect. That is fucking dumb. People will look for, or avoid spoilers at their pleasure. Most mags probably don't want to spoil things.

I don't see Sony telling music or film critics what tracks or acts critics can write about.

Pisses me off that Sony is trying to control the story and critics are letting them.

Games industry and press is so immature, and they're never going to gain legitimacy if they keep going with embargos, and scores, and spoilers, and previews, and all this other nonsense.

if you want to play and review the game early, you're on their terms. If not, then you'll wait until RD to write whatever you want. Simple as that.

sometimes I wonder why I made my avatar in the polygon style from playstation's polygon man and the Polygon website. I thought the style looked nice but maybe after P-day today I should change to something else :p

Great reviews. And people who say Polygon should be excluded from Metacritic should say the same for EDGE magazine. I'm definitely not a fan of Polygon but I will go and read all the reviews again when I have finished the game and see which one describes my opinion the best.

I don't recall any waves in my playthrough, but it was 18.5 hours so maybe I was loopy.

That's good to hear. Someone else mentioned it, but could be wrong. Looking forward to seeing for myself.

The MS funded website Polygon gives a Sony exclusive a 7.5
Why am I not surprised?

I still can't believe some of you are being so petty as to praise the OP for omitting the polygon link.

Its pretty hard not to see an agenda behind that scoring tbh, considering all the other outlets.

What I don't get, is why some of the reviews claim that this is the PS3's swan song, when there are still a couple of big games to follow? People forgot about The Last Guardian, Beyond, GT6, FFv13 and the juggernaut GTA5. There is still some ways to go before this generation ends.

So if it wasn't for Polygon's review this game would be beating RE4? Damn impressive if you ask me.

Especially so considering there are only 33 reviews as part of the Resident Evil 4 rating and 44 for The Last of Us.

I can't wait for this.

EDIT: I just saw the GameCube version. Damn, that is impressive. Regardless, The Last of Us is still pretty impressive.

What's your definition of standard? :/

As in terms of gameplay. It seems like your typical 3rd person shooter game that is balanced more towards less handholdy, but not really many revolutionary ideas or gameplay ideas or w/e with stellar atmosphere and production value, or I've missed something.

Welp, looks like BioShock Infinite, The Last Of Us, and GTA V will be battling it out for GOTY this year.

What a damn fine year for videogames.

I actually don't care if someone really thinks this is a 7/10. Not like that's a bad score. And even if someone gave it a bad score I would be okay with it if the review was well written. But Polygon has built a reputation, and there is mistrust. So I'm skeptical of the intent of the review. As someone that has worked for publications in the film/TV and music industry before, you better believe there is such a thing as giving scores just for the sake of getting hits.

Saw this on your Twitter, christ. Not linking to the Polygon review is really one of the pettiest things I've ever seen on this forum, and that's saying a lot.

Yeah man. It'd be like if someone went into Vita threads and shit on it constantly or something! I guess that does mean you can recognize pettiness when you see it!

That Kohler review is pretty much a commentary on the state of gaming today instead of a solid review.

I agree with him wholeheartedly, but I don't know if I'd take that as a "review."

Great scores.

But then saying that to me the Uncharted games have always been very overrated, will give this a rent though as it sound interest me more.

Should he give The Last of Us high marks for any reason other than his personal conclusions from playing the game?

I think that's what they is arguing is happening. If I understand correctly, they are saying that it was given a score out of line from the general consensus so that the score would stand out and get clicks. Of course there is no way to confirm something like this, just as it would be impossible to say that the score is solely reflective of his option and nothing else. At a certain point you have to trust the reviewer or not. Or... not give a shit.
