The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

These threads are always like a wake up call to what some gaffers are like. I really need to better my skills at taking mental notes so I know in the future when im discussing with people who complain about an 7.5 or 8 score on a game they haven't played themselves, purely based on the scores said game gets on other sites. It's really embarrasing.

Im sure this is just another comment in a sea of similar ones and on what's a common practice at this point but it still kinda catches me by surprise every time.

I see nothing wrong with the people calling out Polygon specifically for being less than credible, regardless of the score given. People don't really care about the similarly scored Gamespot review. While review arguments and fanboys get old and tiring, I almost get equally tired of the self-loathing GAF attitude I see around here more and more.

No it's not. They're attacking the person/site on the grounds that it makes the review irrelevant. They haven't refuted the actual arguments present within the review itself.

Calling into question the reliability of a witness is relevant when the issue is whether to trust the witness. It is irrelevant, however, to call into question the reliability or morality or anything else about a person when the issue is whether that person's reasons for making a claim are good enough reasons to support the claim.
The fallacy in the ad hominem is due to the irrelevant nature of the appeal made, not to its falsity.

This is not irrelevant. It's valid to bring up the fact that they've received a ton of money from Microsoft and have demonstrated this behavior a lot in the past. Like I said earlier, most people here can't make a claim one way or another yet because they haven't played the game. We've seen comparisons to other reviews by the same person, quotes by gies, etc. Once everyone plays the game we'll see whether he was going against the hype machine or blatantly deceiving.

Gaf, I kinda suck at games some times, like I've played all the uncharted on normal but I die millions of times.
Do I have to play this on easy?

They have been the most consistently excellent developer this generation. Two new IPs this gen, and two of them 95+ average metacritic. Holy shit. That's thread worthy alone.

Same could go for Irrational.

94 (Bioshock Infinite)
96 Bioshock 1(has the most reviews on the 360 version)
93 (System Shock 2)

Holy crap on a stick Arkham City is overrated. Jesus christ.

Quite.

All these 10s have me pretty weary, then again I'm always such of games that get quotes such as "Citizen Kane of Gaming" and implied complete flawlessness. I was lukewarm on Uncharted 2 and didn't like Uncharted 3, and those were similarly well received. Hopefully it's good and I'm sure it's great, but I maintain highly skeptical.

Yeah you may have to start on easy.

The game form what I played of the demo is not all that easy.

God.. that demo. I am pretty good at videogames and still managed to die 6 times in the demo during the same fight.

I'm uncomfortable playing any game with a 14 yr old and a grown man as lone survivors in a post apocalyptic world. According to the Machinima video review, they hate each other at first then they grow to love each other. It's all dubious.

There are other characters too. And by love they dont mean in a romantic way i'm sure. More like the old western/cowboy movie trope "I raised that boy like he was my son".

This is video games' 28 Days Later. We don't deserve too much credit, yet.

I believe you can always go up in difficulty, but can't go down during a playthrough for some reason. So start on easy if you're worried and bump it up.

Yeah I experimented with just shooting did not work well at all lol.

Yeah, I started shooting too but then completely ignored it for the run where I finally made it.

Wow, what a game this has shaped up to be. Cannot wait to finally see for myself next week. Oh, does the Microgon, err, I mean Polygon review stick out like a sore thumb or what?

He runs quarter to three. He has been reviewing video games since the print days. He is my favorite reviewer, as he plays all types of games, not just the AAA blockbusters, so his gaming opinions match up much closer to mine. Be warned though, he gives zero fucks about hype and fanboys, and uses the entire scale haha.

I don't read him often, but I always enjoy the sheer extent of how little he gives a shit about anything comes across. I can't recall any review of his I've agreed with, but it's great to have that kinda voice out there. It's much more the kind of stuff you'd read from actual critics of other media instead of enthusiast press.

This congregate list screams "payola."

Or more likely, since the vast majority of the populace enjoys these games, it's not a surprise that the vast majority of game reviewes enjoy these games. This idea that there's a massive segment of the population that thinks Batman : AC, Modern Warfare, and the like are terrible games is simply false.

The truth is, if most of the people here who like to claim 'payola' worked at a major game review site with other people who actually enjoyed AAA games, you'd do one of two things. Quit because you don't line up at all with what people enjoy and feel isolated. Or, become known as the office asshole because you're always acting like your coworkers are non-evolved manchildren for actually enjoying AAA games.

I'm actually scared by these reviews. 10/10 is a lot to live up to. I hope I'm not disappointed.

Just treat it as the usual overhyping of AAA games like Bioshock Infinite and GTA IV and be surprised if the game is actually better.

Yeah, I'd put them up there for Bioshock and Infinite combined. But still, doesn't beat the sheer quality and quantity of Uncharted + Uncharted 2 + Uncharted 3 + The Last of Us. That is a next level resume. 4 amazing games in 6.5 years.
