Microsoft: Xbox One DRM has a "lot of advantages"

Two Advantages to who? Consumers who want to keep practicing rights they don't have? Publishers? Developers? Microsoft?

I'll give you 2 for each:

Publisher+Developers:
1) People are buying your games new, no two ways about it. New or nothing. You are getting money for EVERY single game bought.
2) Microsoft's system for trading in and selling used games also gives you more money. You take a share of it! Nice!

Microsoft:
1) They take a cut of used games and trade in now! Making some money they deserve, nice!
2) They're in full control and will no longer have content stolen from them under there noses like they did with the 360, where people would buy a game, give their profile to their friends, and license transfer and now 2 people got the game for the price of one. If it happens now, they're in full control and will ban said accounts! Nice!

Consumer:
1) Every game you own is now in the cloud! Nice! Your copy of Forza Motorsports 5 no longer requires the disc, less luggage to carry around when you want to go to your friends house and play splitscreen with him! Less effort for you to play what you want to play since you won't have to swap discs.
2) Your Xbox will always be connected and will always be on! You can now always be in the known with your friends, you can now skype while you play! Built in game recording and live streaming! Watch TV while you play, and instant background updates!

This post has to be a joke.

Dat PR

So theoretically you would have to have awkward conversation with your friend before you even START the game. Yes. so much more convenient then having the game on hand.
No, me and my friends usually chill over a few beers and shoot the shit before playing. Why the hell would it be awkward?

FYI, I'm pissed at the DRM and Microsoft's PR over it (check my post history if you think I'm defending anything here) but at least this is one thing you could do if you decided to play games that night at a friends and didn't have the game with you.

If you didn't want to have to have the discs in order to play, or if you didn't want to have to carry around the heavy luggage that is a single video game, you could simply purchase the games digitally. You can already do this on the Xbox 360. It doesn't require DRM.

2) Your Xbox will always be connected and will always be on! You can now always be in the known with your friends, you can now skype while you play! Built in game recording and live streaming! Watch TV while you play, and instant background updates!
Every body that has internet in their house will already be always connected. You can already always "be in the know" or skype while playing. Same with game recording and streaming. None of that requires DRM. How is restricting the people that don't have access to the internet beneficial to the consumer? Requiring people who don't have internet, to be connected to the internet, doesn't help anyone.

Like Steam, you can pop onto anyone's XBox One, log in and download then play your games.

Edit: Damn, didn't notice this was on page 3 already. Sorry if this already came up.

How many hours later? Versus popping in a disc and playing immediately.

Edit: I also love how removing your ass from the couch to change a disc has somehow become a Herculean effort. You'll already be standing up and flailing around to change the channels with the XBone. Just do a squat and insert that disc!

Another issue with this is that for anyone who buys the console many years down the line, when the following Xbox is released, the servers could be gone and the games may not work. Potentially something like this may become unplayable after 8 years and everything you purchased is useless. It's only a matter of time before the servers are closed. The games you purchase lose any resale value.

I know there are a lot of people that own Xbox 360s that trade in their Madden/CoD/Fifa to purchase the next one year after year, now they wont be able to do so. I think used games have always benefited companies more than they give credit for. So many people buy a game new and trade it in later to get another new game.

Whether people like Gamestop or not they are a huge retailer and Microsoft is screwing them over.

It's pretty fucking pathetic that anyone would be willing to exchange "having to carry or insert a disc" for the loss of resale value.

It's also ludicrously stupid (as has already been pointed out) to think that, for the average person, downloading an entire game at a friend's house is somehow a better solution than carrying a disc.

See, the whole dialing home thing is why this is a compromise not worth trying to make. I'd rather have a full digital platform, at least then there's no real reason to force me online all the time even if I have to use the internet to get games.

MS has been bad at clarifying this. I don't know if the online check in is for games originally sourced from discs or also games bought digitally.

The check makes sense for a few reasons and actually helps you the resale if you think about it. You can't resell a copy of StarCraft 2 because the disc is useless after install.

AFAIK any GoD bought on LIVE on the licensed console is playable offline with the purchasers gamertag. Same with XBLA games. Only Xbox indie games need a constant connection to verify them and this is probably to stop grey market XNA developed porn games being installed on the HDD.

I do know that GoDs downloaded to unlicensed offline Xbox 360 will only play for 10 minutes using the purchasers gamertage and they can only be started up in online mode. This makes sense as well because you could pack a Xbox HDD full of GoDs with a local tag and sell these consoles for a big bunch of cash.

What about soldiers oversea or people who don't have internet of fast enough speeds to support the cloud?

That just makes me go huh?

Microsoft is apparently looking into a solution for this type of situation. If I recall correctly, they're making Xbox One's that don't require a connection every 24 hours for certain areas?

What the hell is wrong with some of you? Some of us here travel a lot, and being able to access your games on another XBox One is an advantage.

I'm not saying it makes up for all the other DRM disadvantages Microsoft (and probably Sony) is going to implement... but that is one advantage.

Actually it's the only plus I can think of.

As someone who lost 30+ hours of playtime in Arkham Asylum on Microsoft's Games for Windows Live "cloud", let me counter with this.

Why would I want to be a soldier / live there?

Can I just...half Avatar quote you, the part that's Fry?

Either way, this just further solidifies my choice in going Wii U + PS4 this gen. Nothing I have seen thus far is absolutely compelling to me, what does simply diminishes, and this PR handling is worse than 14 limes.

Xbone, see ya wouldn't want to be ya

I'm making a habit of saying Forza Motorsports 5 because Forza isn't the correct term, and It bothers me to hear people just say "Forza". If I was discussing Forza Horizon though, I'd just say Forza.

The game isn't called Forza Motorsports 5, it's called Forza Motorsport 5. If you're going to be pedantic about how people refer to games, at least get the name right yourself, eh?

I exaggerated a bit when I said "luggage", but my point remains. It obviously doesn't require much effort to bring a game, but just being able to bring your account is SOOOOO much more efficient. There will also be some cases when it is more useful then a disc, but those are more "what if" moments and are silly to use in an argument. :p

Also... I know this only applies to me, and a few more cities, and I'm really the minority, so to use this as a defense is REALLY lame of me... but where I live... we're getting Google Fiber soon. That's another reason I will personally embrace the Xbox One. My Internet will be fast and reliable, and me downloading Forza Motorsports 5 or Banjo-Threeie (Rare please) would take a few minutes with my Gigabit Speeds. I know this isn't the case for everyone though, so I see why some still appreciate discs. Either way, if the Xbox does allow you to play games while they're being downloaded (as rumored), that issue is nonexistent.

So essentially for this to work, I need Gigabit fiber broadband and all my friends need to have it too. And you can't see why this is a problem?

You can't trade in your Steam games though, can you?

I don't need to trade in games that were less than $20 for me to buy.

Exactly.

No they don't.

But see... this is where it gets tricky. The Music/Publishing industries have no ideal way to stop you form reselling their content. Scholastic has no way of stopping you from reselling your physical copy of "The Hunger Games". If they could, they would, but they can't hire enforcers to go around to used Book Stores and take all the copies of "The Hunger Games". Well... they could, but it wouldn't be effective.

That's where the Gaming Industry is special, unlike the other industries, Microsoft created a way to stop you from doing it, and they're going to enforce it. That's really blows because gamers aren't used to this, and we're used to being able to sell and lend our games, but we can't now. That's the future, and we have to accept it. Or we can protest it, buy a PS4/Wii U/Boycott Microsoft. Whichever, I'm supporting Microsoft and buying an Xbox One with Forza Motorsports, because I love Forza.

I asked for that. I wanted this for a while. Not always online DRM, but I've wanted these features for a long time now.

and trust me, I'll be buying mostly digital unless the game I want has a really sweet Box-art, like Forza Motorsports 5! Or if convenience plays a factor. I'll already be at Gamestop to pick up my Xbox One, might as well pick up Forza Motorsports 5, Rare's New Game, Crackdown 3 (Micorsoft Please <3), and any other game that interest me.

Aside from launch, I'll be all digital unless:
A) Boxart is amazing and I must own it.
B) I'm buying a Collectors Edition.
Microsoft account confirmed lol

The only advantage I can think of is that you don't need to go and find the disc if you want to play the game.

Damn, just when it started to look like we would get some answers to all of this mess, Microsoft decideds to keep this carnival of stupid going full speed. Its insanity, and I think the people that believe Microsoft is bulletproof are even crazier they have to be, or they are Microsoft employees.

To be honest, if Microsoft goes through with it, they'll probably go for a lot on Ebay and be VERY valuable, I'd drop down extra for a Xbox One with no always online requirement.

So you basically agree that an xbox with drm has less value to a customer then an xbox without drm - thank you!

Like I said, if they do this, it won't affect those military members who like to bring THEIR OWN consoles with them on deployment and aren't looking to play the handful of special consoles that are given to their military branch.

There's no way with their plans that they would make special circumstances for a 6 month deployed sailor on his own personal console. What they were discussing would be special deals made to certain units that have game consoles on the side for military members to use, like a USO or something.

It quaint that Microsoft still thinks they can control this message while giving no details.

Microsoft: "Just trust us!"

Everyone: "You're Microsoft, so no."

Except Steam games usually cost less than half you'd pay for a "resaleable" game.

By "usually" you mean "occasionally". I've bought enough full-price games on Steam and enough dirt cheap games on Steam to know said cheapness isn't guaranteed or consistent.

As someone who has come to love Steam, I still think most of you are guilty of having double standards regarding the Xbox One.

I really appreciate that Microsoft is doing this. :)

I'm so happy that when I buy my Xbox One at launch, alongside with Forza Motorsports 5, I can just put the disc in, and always have it with me on my harddrive, no longer needing the disc.

And then I can take my copy to my Friends House and play Forza Motorsports 5 together splitscreen, without me needing to bring my game! All digital and all perfect!

Microsoft is doing good with the Xbox One so far, hype!

Wouldn't it be easier to bring your disc than to wait a few hours for the game to download at your friends house?
