There was no one true king of Westeros. Just lords and people doing their shit as they do, pushing out their chest and calling themselves rightful rulers of their conquered domains.

Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros, created the Iron Throne and King's Landing, and claimed himself king of everything.

The Targaryens ruled for ~300 years, the last being Aerys Targaryen, aka the Mad King. He was overthrown by Robert Baratheon, who took the throne in his family's name.

Renly and Stannis want the throne because they believe it is rightfully theirs based on Robert. Daenerys wants the throne because she believes it's rightfully hers based on Aegon and Aerys. Tywin, Littlefinger, and anybody else who wants the throne want it because they know "rights" are total imaginary horseshit and power comes to those with the will and strength to take it, just like the lord of old.

Nobody has any right to shit. It's whoever gets it and can hold it.

Each of the areas before Aegon's conquest were Kingdoms. It is why they call the ruler of this realm in Westeros the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

Biggest casting disappointment so far.

Why cast such a brilliant actor in a 'nothing' role?

He's been in like, two episodes this season and done sod all.

Where's this so-called "biggest fire the north has ever seen"?

Well, realistically there'd be some sort of right of conquest that starts the lines and rights over again. I mean, Daenery's father only had the right because someone before him conquered everyone and the line started there..

The Targaryens were the first to unite westeros, creating the Iron Throne itself. They are beyond a simple claim. It belongs to them. Also why all the children were killed following Robert's Rebellion.
Also even in real life History same rules apply. Dethroned heirs still had a claim (and where often killed), it's just a matter of how they'll rally people to their cause, really

I don't understand this at all, either. Where the fuck is the army of wildlings? There was supposedly a ton, then they got to the wall and there was almost no one there climbing it. Was Jon in like a scouting group or something? What's going on there?

-If Jon Snow is Ned's child I'll eat a hat.

It'll be a hat feast then, because I will, too.

That's why they're after Castle Black: To open the gates. I'm expecting the giants and snarks and rest of the Wildling army are just massing there, waiting for Ygritte and Torund to let them through.

Another note about the Starks and their choices:

Ned Stark beheaded a (relatively) innocent man, died.
Theon Greyjoy beheaded an innocent man, is dying in a torture cell.
Robb Stark beheaded a non-innocent man who maybe deserved it but probably shouldn't have, died.

Jon Snow could not bring himself to behead an innocent man...lives.

unless this!:

how fucking weird would it be if bran wargs into someone like maynce raider and gets stuck there. whatever adult he wargs into would have to have some serious acting chops to pull off a kid in an adult body.

seems too ridiculous for this universe, but i feel like the whole eagle thing and hodor thing last episode was a foreshadow of something like that happening with bran.

i had no idea that guy was a well regarded actor. this just lends support to my crazy theory!

I think Mance asked them to send a signal when they reached Castle Black. Presumably to tell him to start his attack. That's how I remember it anyway, haven't seen the episode since then.

In episode 3 Mance sent them over the wall in a small group to ambush the Night's Watch.

Weird, usually I'm the one wondering how people missed those small but important details. Guess I missed this one completely. Makes sense, then.

I'm thinking there has to be some sort of "justice" moment for a 'good' character in the next episode otherwise the season is really going to end on a downer.

and I only had to create four accounts to get into beautifulpeople (maybe, we'll see in a day)

What's that?

Team Stannis! Saw this list on another forum and well, facts are facts. It was a no spoilers thread and didn't see any book spoilers so here's a copy paste.

Top Reasons to be on Team Stannis:

- He is as dry as cardboard in a desert.
- He has a permanent scowl on his face, it looks like something is stuck up his arse.
- He is grey. They're is no colour in him at all.
- He rarely says anything interesting.
- Treats Davros like shit.

No. #AnythingButStannis

Stannis is actually a pretty wonderful character. How many characters do you see come across as dull and uncharismatic by design? Normally that's due to bad writing, bad acting, or a combination of the two. Here it just happens to be who the guy is.

Then GRRM is a genius.

I still want Stannis to die.

I know. That's what I was trying to get at. At some point in history, after some major events, and before many to come, a bunch of dudes with big armies and big ideas and a lust of conquest partitioned off Westeros into the territories they laid claim to. It was only theirs, their kingdom, because they said so. Just as the concept of the King of Westeros, Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, only exists because Aegon and his sister wives fucked up shit with their army and dragons and told everyone they ruled it all.

It's kind of two layers you've got. Those who claim the throne is theirs by some subjective interpretation of blood and family right, like Stannis and Daenerys. And those who know it's all bullshit yet use it as a vessel to power, like Varys, Littlefinger, and Tywin.

Grantland.com giving no fucks with a spoiler right on their front page. Feel sorry for people who don't keep up with these shows day and date but man it's becoming such a pop culture icon that its hard not to talk about.

Stannis is somber and unlikable, and has trouble garnering support as a result. He may yet be the best king from a pragmatic standpoint but I doubt he's meant to be a terribly attractive figure. I think the actor is playing him exactly as he should be - distant, cold, gray.

If it's a "shit goes down" episode it's borderline impossible to stay spoiler free if you use any social media network, watch television, or go outside.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I couldn't watch the latest episode for 2 - 3 days after it aired, as I was visiting my folks. Despite nobody outright spoiling specific details, I was 99% sure Robb was a dead man, along with most likely others (though wasn't sure of his wife and mother) before I got around to watching it.

People are shit with spoilers even when they think they're being vague. "OH MAN THAT TERRIBLE THING HAPPENED TO THE STARKS THAT EPISODE I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. NO SPOILS THO." Well, shit, wonder what that could be? Facebook wouldn't shut up. Twitter wouldn't shut up. TV wouldn't shut up.

Never again.

People were doing that exact same thing on GAF too.

There's almost no way people can avoid it now. The stuff with the Red Wedding reactions in particular has gone viral like a motherfucker. Even if you've been fortunate to avoid any detail beyond that, you know there's something involving a "red" wedding and hysterical viewer reactions, so you can probably put two and two together fairly easily.

-Starks have zero legitimate claim to a throne. They can only usurp it. Rebel. Eddard Stark the Usurper. Does it sound like him?

The Starks were kings of the north before the Targaryen's came along.

That's why they're after Castle Black: To open the gates. I'm expecting the giants and snarks and rest of the Wildling army are just massing there, waiting for Ygritte and Torund to let them through.

Deserting the Wall is always punishable by death. No exceptions.

Renly points out many of his flaws, as you note. "Charmless, rigid, bore."

The two brothers are polar opposites.

Also one of my favrite lines there... "Born amidst salt and smoke? .....Is he a ham?"

Team Stannis all the way, the one true heir.

I don't know why people have such a quibble over the right of succession and Stannis' claim.

If Obama dropped dead tomorrow, would you have an issue with Joe Biden considering himself the next president? Would you feel he's too "entitled" to feel that way. Would you be okay with Boehner saying "sure I'm behind him in the line of success but people like me more so I should be the next president"(which is what Renly did), would you have a problem with Chaney going "sure I'm the heir of the previous regime but so what my claim is preceed Biden's so I should be president" (which is what Dany's claim is).

Stannis is the heir, he is next in line, so he considers it natural that he should be the next king, and all the people who don't are the ones messing with the system.

The entire series has shown multiple times that always sticking to the "right" choice of letter of the law with zero tolerance...will eventually end badly.

Treason is punishable by death. Robb was right to behead Karstark. Didn't do him any good.

If they keep the same shooting schedule going, filming for the 7th season will start around July 2016. If they plan on the 7th season representing the final book, I dunno if it's gonna make it.

An 8th season would give them more breathing room but I have no idea how they're planning out the rest of the books as far as seasons go.

Renly knew it well. They made for a great contrast to each other. Shame they had so little screen-time together.

Two things:

From the POV of the characters, that requires you to believe Joffrey is illegitimate. Of course we know he is, but they have to assess the wortiness of the claim without having studied Mendel in High School or having seen Ned's/Jon's evidence.

From the POV of us readers, we know that power lies where men believe it lies. Robert usurped the throne, so who's to say Stannis is legitimately the heir? If you figure all bets are off, go with whomever you like. I mean, by modern sensibilities, succession and rule by right of kings and lineage is a load of crap anyway. Robb at least had people declare him king (although he was only in a position to be declared by his own birth in the first place).
