Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

I'm VERY interested to see what happens with the Xbox One. I can't recall a time where a company took as severe a turn toward anti-consumer practices as this. The DRM combined with a head-to-head launch against PS4 could seriously injure the Xbox's sales.

So the big question is: what happens when Sony does the same thing? Where do we turn?

PC, with things like Steam's Big Picture mode, it can act as a console just fine, while supporting both indie and other developers perfectly.

You have to be a complete fucktard moronic stupid twat to defend this shit.

Sorry, but you do.

Well I myself wouldn't go that far but lets be honest if a corporation needs defending from the press that covers it and it's consumers you can tell that something is pretty rotten.

Find it hard to believe that Microsoft would risk it's whole ents division without knowing Sony were onboard the DRM train as well or that major publishers have binding contracts that they won't publish their IP's on non DRM consoles

Why? MS and Sony are two diffent companies with very different philosophies. People seem to forget that this is MS and they have been pushing DRM systems for years with their operative systems and products. Thus, it does not really look surprising that now they want to do the same with the Xbox ONE. Let's always remeber that Sony is a hardware company first, while MS is a software company first.

It won't happen. It was already confirmed that PS4 won't use this anti-consumer approarch. They want to be able to sell consoles in countries where internet infrastructures are not solid and thus they won't sell a consoles that requires a mandatory internet connection.

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies
how can you watch live TV if your internet is down?

I can't speak for the american legal system, but if it came to light that Microsoft and Sony were collaborating on anti consumer policies in secret, the EU courts would have a field day.

That being said EU does not have gamestop or other centralized gaming shops beside UK. Most of countries used game market is 98% by ebay or other comparable services or simply person to person.

This is megakill for EU market.

Get your facts right, they have Stores in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and in Switzerland, if you want to talk about Europe, not European Union. Those are countries beside UK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GameStop

So... uhh.. there are two things that I can't understand. Hopefully some good Gaffer will help me

1) " and each game can only be given once "
What does it mean? I don't get it

2) They say you can give a game to a friend if he was in your friend list for over 30 days.
He also has to check online every hour.
But does he still have to log into your account?

Anyway, everything sounds like... a nightmare.

1) You can give a game to a friend (who's been on your friend list for 30 days), but he/she can never give that game to anyone else like you just did.

2) No, once you give your game to your friend, it is no longer associated with your account. It is your friend's game the same as if he bought it, except for see 1)

Sony have confirmed over and over that the PS4 doesn't ever have to be connected online.

Even if they do implement some form of DRM , it can actually be as bad as the bullshit MS are forcing in people.

I'm sure Sony is feeling some pressure from big publishers to follow Microsofts model and who knows, maybe they are.

It would be pretty dumb, if they didn't follow MS and kept things as they are the consumers will likely flock to them. The publishers, even if they would initially be threatening Sony to boycot their system in favor of the Xbone, will always follow where the gamers are.

So, lets hope Sony is not doing any of this, so we can add this trend finally.

I really hope Sony can withstand the pressure! If they can and your predictions are right, MS will change their policy accordingly and we as consumers are the winners. I really liked this 7th Gen because all plattform holders had to bring their best to convince me as customer, where i put my money. So sad to have to make up my mind about such retarded things. I just want to enjoy my games!

Fuck you MS.

It's not even the 24h thing.
It's not even the no used games thing.
It's not even the sub-par specs.
It's not even the messy TV thing.
It's not even the stupid name.
It's not even the Design 101 two-tone hardware atrocious thing.
It's not even the bombastic, snarky attitude.

It's just because I enjoyed my 360 >>> PS3, that I'm lazy, and that 720 could/should have been my de facto console.

I got other things to ponder rather than which console I'll main and when/if I'll buy both next-gen consoles.

I should be excite.
I'll just get your shitty console because I love games, and there is no way in Hell that with all your $$$ you won't be able to publish an exclusive IP that gives me boners and makes me want to play late at night with 12 years old kids rather than sex my girl.

Grrrrrr...eedy.

So I understand:

- Microsoft offers publishers DRM service (which they could actually take the responsibility for themselves).
- Microsoft allows selling used games without any charge (but limits it to some chains, which might result in another (legal) shitstorm).

They actually don't really get much out of this, but started one of the biggest PR trainwrecks in gaming history to do so.

They offer the possibility to play without disc but need to go online every 24h for that instead of additionally just offering the option to use the disc to play. But they make some exceptions for soldiers and families and stuff which probably all will result in a huge chaos.

For what????

LTTP(...not a party in this case) and just saw the content of the OP. What...I don't even..

Gotcha! Thanks a lot, really, thought that with the thread moving this fast nobody would care.
There's still something that's confusing me though:

about 2) Wait... what does that mean? How do I get it back then if it is no longer with my account?? I can't play it anymore?!? But that would mean I can literally give it to a single friend...

Also: what about those 10 "family members" ? What if I delete them and change them? (when in reality they are of course friends). I can't understand what restriction they have

Whether Sony eventually decides to go with DRM or not, make no mistake, they will be watching the fallout to this intenseley.

Microsoft blinked first, they bluffed and had nothing. Everything could be about to get a LOT more interesting.

1) You can/may sell him your licence and he will then get the game. It would then remove the license from you and transfer it to him. He cannot sell it to ANYONE else or transfer it back to you. The disc you bought is then rendered useless to you as you no longer "own" the game.
Thats how I understand that.

2) See my answer for 1). Outside of selling your ownership to a friend, they would have to log in as you I guess. The 30day friend thing would act as a detterent to any would be "business" man who would just add friends, sell the game to them, then delete them off his list. The hope the 30day pre-requisite makes it a pain in the ass where you would rather trade it to their designated retailer for a lower price than random people on XBL.

Thats how I understand it. I hope Im wrong.

EDIT: Oh, beaten to it :)

But as long as he is connected he should be fine right .I mean all the console will do is verify with the server every day ,the speed should not matter. The bigger problem is when the net is down for more than 24 hours for any reason.

Well, maybe. I was alluding to the details here: http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/connected

Specifically:
For an optimal experience, we recommend a broadband connection of 1.5Mbps.

But I guess this doesn't disallow that a lower speed will still allow you to use the console.

There's a very low density of gamestop stores in european cities I know and/or have visited, mainly talking about France and switzerland. Bring up google maps with a general view of europe and search for gamestop, not quantitavely accurate probably but gives some indication.

There are store chains in mainland europe however, for instance micromania in france (which gamestop actually owns according to the wiki article you linked).

I have reliable fiber internt access.
Have a tv box that will probably be supported by Xbone;
I like Metro very much.
Was (is?) a Halo fan.
Love the controller.
Have hated Sony Playstations from day1 for plunging Nintendo in the tech ghetto.

You wouldn't even squeeze a drop of Hype from me.

That is correct - you can't play the game anymore once you give it to your friend. It is their game forever. Loaning games is not supported by Xbox One at this time.

As for the 10 family members thing, I'm still confused about that myself. I think they must be tied to the same console, but can have different accounts?

Well sent a friend a link to the information, I was shocked with how OK it was.

I think the only thing I can think of that I don't have a problem with the power of the system or the controller.

Everything else though this is so fucking convoluted for what ... is a simple thing for publishers to speak to retail directly, rather than punish consumers.

This entire system feels like:

MS1: "Oh God we have to appease these publishers!"
MS2: "Shit we CANNOT make this work without the internet..."
MS1: "... we'll put a mandatory connection to check!"
MS2: "But, but we have to think of a benefit for consumers..."
... 2 weeks go by ...
MS1: "We'll let them play there content anywhere"
MS2: "But they could do that already sir."
MS1: "Hey ..."
MS2: "What?"
MS1: "What if we use terms like 'powered by the cloud' ;)"
MS2: "Eh?'
MS1: "We rebrand all talk of online features as 'cloud' features"
MS2: "Genius"

Outside of special editions, the collection value of the games are pretty much killed now :( That is the worse part in my opinion.

Have hated Sony Playstations from day1 for plunging Nintendo in the tech ghetto.
Nintendo didnt get into the tech ghetto before ~10 years after the Playstation 1 was launched (assuming you mean that the Wii didnt have very powerful hardware compared to PS3 and Xbox 360).

They did that to themselves, same with Sega.

Although cable Tv is common in the US, in Europe the biggest provides of pay Tv services all use satellite systems.

No. At least not in Germany.

Is it just me or is the idea that I can step in front of any X1 and it recognizes me and accesses my games incredibly cool? Privacy or not, I love this idea. No more profiles, it just knows me, wherever I am.

I don't think that's Sony's fault.

One thing I didnt understand about the 10 family member situation: do they need to play it on your account on their console?

No, Kinect will recongnize you as main owner and if more than 10 people other than you play with the console, your credit card will be automatically charged with a 50$ fee.

LOL, just kidding.

So half the rumors that GAF trusted users confirmed proven false yet everyone is still on the hate train. Wow, alright ability to trade games with friends, no fees, able to have your entire library from any console, share with up to ten family members, ect.. Sounds like some great things, the industry has to evolve and it will with or without your consent. People fear change, yet in the end when it is the standard will learn to accept it.
Because I own an Xbox and a 360, the timing is just coincidence. I really like Cerny and alot of things the PS4 are doing and will most likely buy one if I like the titles released on it. Unlike alot of people on here and other sites I have never had a problem with MS and I don't understand the massive hate because it seems that everything that comes out no matter how positive it is, is picked apart. Yet if Sony were to do the same thing it would be praised, talk about your double-standards.

it all sounds so needlessly complicated, ugh. I don't want the future of gaming to be like this...

You can thank Steam and PC crowd that allow this to happen so many years ago. I was one of the few who hated Steam, the need for authorization, the game that are lock to your account etc. Console is just following PC.

On the bright side at least Microsoft will let you sell your used game and "gift" the game you don't want even if it just for one time to your friends or family. It's more than what Steam or Blizzard gave me that for sure. I wish I could sell back Diablo 3.

Judging by the short amount of time it took Microsoft to do an about-face on SOME of their DRM / Online Policies ... it surely musn't be a big step for them to complete the circle and ditch this shit completely

xBone is really only some Hyper-V machines running on Windows 8 in an Azure cloud after all ... the rest is just hoops we jump through so they can grab our MONEY!!

Yeah man, you love games enough you'll be sending that message to microsoft that you want them to fuck you harder while you play with little boys.

With THIS shit, Microsoft has just lost one great customer. Me /300+games, 100+ XBLA titles/. No matter what, i won't buy Xbone .
Deal with it, Microsoft.

Yeah I'm in a similar position. Don't know what I'll be gaming on next year but it sure as hell isn't going to be an Xbone.

*shrug*

I've had more situations where I've had access to an xbox 360 and a high speed internet connection, but not the game (that I already owned) that I wanted to play on hand, than I've been in a situation where I have my system + the game, but no internet connection.

This setup would appear to solve that problem for me.
