Sony E3 press conference; June 10th 6PM PT/9PM ET

Those three games are all incredibly linear, and could have obviously shipped on DVDs. MGS4 even has install pauses for minutes every chapter, massively longer than the time it takes to change a disc.

It's not just game style. It's things like uncompressed CG sequences (FFXIII), uncompressed audio etc. Without Blu-Ray they just wouldn't have happened, you can't seriously tell me game developers would have shipped games on 5-6 DVD's like they did with CD's in the PS1 era?
Also in regards to MGS4, the chapter installs were not due to the media the game shipped on, they were there because of the relatively small Hard Drives that the initiall PS3 SKU's shipped with. Hence why a full install option was patched in along with the trophies last year.

Blu Ray wasn't a mistake. It's just that Sony didn't expect the competition to be strong and the Wii to take off the way it did. Blu-Ray actually helped distinguish the PS3 from the other consoles. It's one of the best things about the system.

Sony fully expected to lose money on the PS3 to push their business model but the entire situation with the Yen and underperforming electronics division put a big strain on the company. What they should have done was to go with a simple architecture like the PS4.

Blu-Ray did hurt them but they were prepared for that.

Going to have to agree that in the long term, BD wasn't a mistake.

Yeah actually it was a bigger success than many people thought it would be. Obviously the future is digital downloads but back in '05 that was not as possible as it is today. We needed another physical medium.

I am looking forward to this press conference, it has the potential to swing the hobby of console gaming in a big way. Equal parts hopeful and nervous. There is a lot of noise on GAF these days and it is getting hard to parse, so I was wondering if SONY had mentioned anything about their DRM and what not yet?

It was because Sony's first party rules limited harddrive installs by size. And the installs were to help reducing loading time, and considering the loading times on 360 are uniformly better, that's irrelevant.

And Lost Odyssey on 360 is four DVDs.

Is there chance that next gen MGSV will be ps4 exclusive?

The problem was the price and lackluster lineup until the PS3 slim (there were good titles but nothing to make the many people go crazy for it).

PS2 had wonderful early releases like FFX, MGS2, Silent Hill 2, DMC, GT3, etc.

Hopefully PS4 can do that. It doesn't need to be exactly like the PS2 launch but early blockbusters (like having FFXV next year).

With the PS4 we might get FFXV, MGSV, The Evil Within, GT6, (can't think of anything to replace DMC :( ), but its very similar. The big difference is that the PS2's games were all exclusive.

Seems like they'd have to extend return policies for games that would have something like that on them... what if you despise the game after a few days with it?

If you open the game then there is no refund. That's how it works here. Unless it's damaged, which is different entirely where you usually get an exchange. Refunds mostly occur for sealed/unused goods.

And how many DVD's would a full quality version of God of War 3 have needed? How about a version of FFXIII that didn't have horrible CG? I'm not saying it wasn't doable, it just would have become the norm like it did for first party Sony games at least.
And personally I am thankful for Sony for sticking with Blu-Ray.

Ewww, XIII on 360, lol.

I have no idea, and yes, some games like FFXIII would have been worse, no doubt. I didn't say it didn't result in a better console, I said it delayed the launch, and made the system cost a hundred dollars more, and those things hurt PS3 more than having better FFXIII cutscenes helped, which is basically, not at all. The delay alone meant everyone leading on 360, out the gate it meant the 360 was going to be the lead version of virtually every multiplatform game. Now that's not the case, Tomb Raider, BioShock, Saint's Row, etc, but now is irrelevant.

How are we on the issue of RPGs on both Playstation consoles? It's something I definitely miss from this generation, since they were far and between.

Going into the next generation I think you'll see a lot more Japanese devs jump on board the PS4 earlier than they did the PS3. They can't afford to be late this time.

It is cool to see that on the games side of things it's like the PS2 all over again. Now if only Sony could come out and start their conference stating "MS has missed the point, here's a real gamers machine" and put everyone to ease with the DRM fiasco, and shout "Now who wants to see some games!"

Play your cards right Sony, I mean for fuck sake MS just played a pair of 3's and you have all the means to throw down a straight flush.

And presumably MS isn't loading Japan with dev kits and money hats because they know there's no point.

When you say they are definitely in that mindset is this based off of things you've been hearing from within?

Would be awesome if Sony tried to bring back the PS1 and PS2 days!

Obviously nice to hear confirmation from the likes of Kagari on this, but I think Sony's message so far has been pretty stronge evidence of this mindset already. The PS Meeting was littered with references to their gaming heritage; from soundbites to that fantastic video montage. The first game we saw looked like the kind of thing we might have seen from Sony in the PS2 days, and Cerny was constantly invoking the good vibes from Sony's most successful eras.

It all feels like Sony are accutely self aware of the relative battering they have received during the last 6/7 years and they are actively trying to return their image to one that represents them at their strongest. I think it's a good initial policy which will help secure the core install base, by getting as many Playstation fans as possible to make the transition.

At least Bluray won the war, but I heard Sony receives such a miniscule amount of that profit, I wonder if that was even worth it for them losing all that money on hardware with the PS3.

The good thing about Blu-ray is that it is probably the very last physical media they will make. I really don't see any other sort of physical disc after this, so at least Sony has Blu-ray locked down as the de facto storage disc for many, many years to come. I guess that counts for something.

Drive Club will have a show floor demo:

For those that are attending, grill them about wheel support and don't let up until they give you an answer.

I do wonder if it's going to be a repeat of the PS2 generation but with less sales.

Ultimately, it doesn't really matter, BluRay won the format war, and partially due to PS3, so Sony will always profit from that, long term it might not have been a mistake for Sony, but it is the reason PS3 hugely underperformed.

Well, one part of two. It helped devs. Cell just overcomplicated the matter. And now we do not have bc. In hindsight, going x86, would have been the best call. Bluray paid off, whilst cell as a bet didn't.

Cell forced multithreading on the developers, which is inherent in all the next-gen engines. Cell had almost the same result as the BRD in that sense.

People in this thread are worried about PS4 not getting enough 3rd party exclusives? Really? it was only announced a couple hours ago Daylight is PS4 exclusive which looks pretty cool.

3 Days to go! Almost there! Thought I'd come up with a list of 10 topics (one per day) we can all post about until E3 gets here.

Who is the best villain in a Playstation game? :)

Pick only 3 villains (or less).

1. The Boss (MGS3)
2. Cortex (Crash Bandicoot)
3. Gol and Maia (Jak and Daxter)

Fellow GAFfers post some "swag" E3 related while you there. Don't ask why but I love that stuff, maybe because I'm into Marketing & Communication.

I must thank fellow GAFfer A master Ninja for providing me some keychains, notepads, lanyards, etc Otherwise I would never be able to get them. :')

Those Drive Club shirts look amazing, can't wait to see more of the game. The video from yesterday got me hyped. I also need more Square Enix info too!

It depends on the caliber of 3rd party exclusives. Operationalize caliber as $$$ to make/moneyhat. Plus, Daylight is on PC -- doesn't count.

Please no, there is nothing more boring than a racing game demo on a press conference.

SO wait... did they REALLY change the name to #DRIVECLUB?!

They've been using hashtag everywhere.

Show floor is not the same as press conference.

If the new IP from GG isn't announced at E3 I'd imagine GC is a safe bet.

Yeah. That could be.

Probably some of the more casual games, singstars and whathaveyou.

E3 is war time, it's go hard or go home time.

Sure E3 is the biggest event but for the past few years Sony has actually had decent conference in Gamesom too so they could leave some ''real'' games for it too. Makes it feel that they care about Europe. =P
