Why are there negative connotations to the term 'dudebro'?

Why do some people feel that playing Halo/CoD/Gears/Sports games or whatever is a bad thing and implies less intelligence and (lol) sophistication.

Call me a dudebro. I like Halo and I'm proud.
even though Halo 4's MP kinda stinks

The problem isn't necessarily with the gamer who buys and enjoys those games (though stereotypes do arise) but rather with how the industry chases after that demographic almost exclusively with no thought to expanding the audience.

Dudebro means every game needs an aiming reticule, lots of cursing, and your character's shit is fucked up so he has to shoot/slice you.

Goes back to nerds versus jocks, I believe. Or, it's that judgmental attitude hardcore communities foster to create some sort of non-existent superiority over the rest.

Because Dudebro: My Shit Is Fucked Up So I Got To Shoot/Slice You II: It's Straight-Up Dawg Time still hasn't been released.

By neogaf standards, dudebros are considered one of the lowest common denominator audiences. GAF gets pissed when companies start catering to that.

I've met a "dudebro" that is an Honors student who majored in Physics. Make that what you will.

No one is suggesting that they're stupid, only that they're not gaming enthusiasts.

I think the resentment mostly stems from the fact that there are a lot of people who only play those games, and therefore they get catered to by the gaming industry above everyone else, leading to a disproportionate number of games of those genres, half of which are clones of each other and play more or less the same.

Dude bro's definitely exist and they are catered to by the market, so that frustrates people. I don't really give a shit myself, I find the dude bro vitriol quite hilarious. I also think it's people's latent insecurities that makes them lash out at dude-bros.

Stereotyping and making assumptions based on traits that are often related is not really something that your brain could or should turn off. People who are only concerned with those games just usually happen to fall into a particular crowd. I don't know that the connotation is really that negative though.

If I see a guy with a swastika tattoo on his forehead I'm not going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he just likes the way it looks. If I see a person's game collection and it's each year's Madden, Call of Duty, a copy of Gears of War from GameStop, and nothing else then yeah I'll infer some things about his tastes and/or personality until shown otherwise. It's not like I'm going to shun him or anything though.

People who only play games like Halo and Call of Duty aren't even necessarily "dudebros". I don't think it's really hatred against fratboys (which is what the term typically means), it's more of just people being tired of gamers who don't really want to expand their horizons beyond a couple shooters a year.

Have you ever been to a shopping center or mall where they have those little shops where you pay a fee to play Calll of Duty, Halo, Madden, etc.? There's a line of HDTVs and Xbox/PS3s and mostly military and college guys playing.

Those are your dudebros.

term's rooted in the worst flavor of nerd-pride bullshit and those who use it sincerely are probably best ignored

Dudebro is shallow. That's where the negativity comes from.

I don't like the term but at least I understand.

Well, the same guy I know considers himself a hardcore gamer. Plays RPG games regularly.

This is actually a honeypot to get all the self-conscious dudebros in one place before they are carted off to work in the Linux Mines. #FreeDudebros #DudebroPersecution

because we are part of a culture that was for the most part picked on / made fun of by these types of people. The only proper thing to do in return is make fun of them.

yeah man I just don't get it.

Good authors who too once knew better words now only use four letter words writing prose.

With the dudebros.

Because dudebro's are only interested in certain games, never in expanding beyond that limited scope.

Because it's a pathetic way of asserting superiority in ones tastes. I choose to take the word back from those people and embrace my inner dudebro.

I used the term to refer to that guy who upon seeing me playing Sin & Punishment 2 on the Wii said "This game sucks, why don't you play Call of Duty."

/did actually happen, something like that

Dudebro = monogamer, usually sticks to single franchise per genre, known to have game(s) from Sports and Shooter genres. Usually competitive, enjoys co-op locally. Might still have a PS2 from his Tekken/stoner days, but it's now down in the lobby used for watching DVD rips of How I Met Your Mother.

Believes $60 for a video game is insane, will literally only buy a game PER year, very seldom new.

Complains about balance/bug issues in his game of choice, a product of him logging more time than the average play tester.

Prioritizes women and social drinking above playing video games, promotes social drinking whilst gaming, attempts combining women, social drinking, and gaming, but often fails.

Loves Naruto and Bleach.

Gets overexcited about special moves and easter eggs.

Will make you sit and watch while he shows you special moves and easter eggs.

Needs to show you that fucking game where that guy fucks everything up its INSANE (God of War)

This is kinda like asking "Why is 'fratboy' used as a pejorative?" I mean, there may be some fratboys out there who aren't complete pricks. But if so, I've never met one of them.

When I think 'dudebro' I think obnoxious bully alpha male gamers. Playing Halo and CoD doesn't make you that. (I <3 Halo btw)

There are probably people who only play Japanese games that mock dude bros, or whatever games they don't like. Some just like to play RPGs, or only Nintendo games and what not.

I mean it's fine if you only like one kind of game. No needs to be mocked or mock others especially when you are basically doing the same.

I first heard the term long before I'd been to GAF and the person who said it doesn't play games. She used it to refer to a fratboy we saw out at a bar.

Ohhh... I get what you guys mean haha.

One shouldn't stereotype them and say they're all dumb though.

Do people really call them dumb though? In a serious manner I mean? I hate that the publishers cater to that type of gamer so much, but I don't recall ever saying that every dudebro gamer is a true to life retard....

It just gets frustrating to see the bulk of publishers talent and effort being laser focused on that particular segment. And it REALLY gets annoying when a person who ONLY plays those types of games jumps into OT's of other games and runs their mouth about it. (Though that doesn't happen here, but on other forums OT's for games like Journey are a fucking mess.)

I wouldn't worry about it. Dudebros probably rank higher on the hierarchy than weaboos and are more influential than hipsters and monocles.

I liked Bulletstorm, does that make me a dudebro?

What classifies you as a dudebro?

Do you kill dicks?
